I have been a member for four years now and I’ve taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized sports competitions and we even made a video. But it isn’t all just enjoyment, we have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a social support group to help young people stop smoking. We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local old people’s home. This idea came from a school visit to an old people’ home. My class spent an afternoon at a home and everyone found the visit very rewarding. The old people at the home were very excited by our visit. They were very talkative(健谈的) and they told us their personal stories. During our visit ,the home was filled with the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea together. But we realized that life wasn’t always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very unhappy. They couldn’t go outside and the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives. Many young people like me do not live with our grandparents and we have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, many young people don’t know what they are like and we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in their homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives. Since the creation of our visiting group, over twenty volunteers have joined us. Up to now, we have organized three group evenings and a concert. But it is the individual(单独的) visits which are the most important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding. 24. The writer ____________. A. works at an old people’s home B. lives with her grandparents. C. lives in an old people’s home. D. regularly visits old people. 25. The Community Youth Club_______________. A. only organizes leisure activities for young people B. has made a video about life in an old people’s home C. has arranged a school visit to the local old people’s home D. mainly does social work. 26. The writer thinks that many children today __________. A. are not interested in how old people live B. do not want to get to know old people C. have very little contact with old people D. live with their grandparents 27. As for Community Youth Club’s future, The author’s attitude to it is ____________. A. positive B. negative C. neutral D. indifferent C In recent years many countries have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied. But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? There is evidence to suggest that while variety certainly makes the worker's life more enjoyable, it doesn't actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then, variety is not an important factor. Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modern factory with its complicated(复杂的) machinery. Thus while freedom of choice may be important, there is usually very little that can be done to create it. Another important consideration is how much each worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is degree of worker contribution an important factor, but it is also one we can do something about. To what degree does more money lead to great productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we succeed in making their jobs more interesting, they will neither want more money, nor will shorter working hours be so important to them. 28. According to the author, what advantage do varied jobs bring? A. They increase productivity enormously. B. They reduce boredom among workers. C. They bring out the best in workers. D. They relieve workers' difficulties. 29. What can we clearly see from the passage? A. It’s practical to allow more freedom in a modern factory. B. It's necessary to have a large number of workers. C. It's important to raise workers’ sense of contribution. D. It’s difficult to have more production lines. 30. The passage seems to suggest that ________. A. more money leads to demands for shorter working hours B. more money does not automatically create higher productivity C. workers like more money better than more interesting jobs D. workers expect to have both more money and more interesting jobs 31. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. How to enrich workers'1ife. B. How to make workers more productive. C. How to shorten working hours. D. How to decrease dullness in a factory. D If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault (过错). Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do. 32.Someone can’t have a good memory if ________. A.he can’t read or write B.his parents haven’t a good memory C.he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time D.he doesn’t make good use of his memory 33.If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________. A.they will become thin B.they will become weak C.they begin to ache all over D.you can’t use them any more 34.Few people know that if someone has a poor memory it is ________. A.his own fault B.his parents" fault C.his teachers" fault D.his friends" fault 35 Give the best title for this passage. ____. A. Don't Stop Using your Arms or Legs B. Learn from the People C. How to Have a Good Memory D. Strong Arms and Good Memories 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 4 Study Habits You Should Be Practicing With exams, essays, projects, and many deadlines for different things, effective study habits are necessary. 36 If you are in need of a bit of an improvement, keep reading for the top four study habits that you should be practicing. 1. Make and use flashcards. 37 By using flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other, you will force your brain to recall the necessary information. Even if you struggle a bit with a card, you will still be actively revising the necessary material. 2. Revise, revise, revise! Many students put off studying until just before the exam, with the more hardworking students giving themselves a week or two before a test. 38 It’s best to revise the information a little bit every day, so that you are not upset when a test comes around. 3. 39 One of the most effective—and the most fun—methods of studying is to watch related lectures and videos in order to get more material. Watch documentaries or videos on YouTube and educational websites. You may be surprised at how much you can learn from videos, and just how much information is available online. 4. Re-write your notes. Studies have shown that writing information out by hand increases your ability to remember the material. This makes the recall go hand-in-hand with muscle memory. 40 These are the four most effective study habits, and something all successful students do. Make sure you are on top of your game by following these study methods! A. Watch related lectures and videos. B. One method of revising is to make a mind-map. C. Use these graded tests to create a new practice test. D. Having these great study habits can make things easier. E. However, it’s actually an ineffective method of preparing and studying. F. Flashcards are designed to improve active memory recall of information. G. You will be able to picture your written notes when you are taking the exam. 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 This was my first Thanksgiving Day in Birmingham.
