Instead, they learn at home. Most often, their parents are their teachers. Educational companies, libraries and the Internet provide many families with teaching material.‎ ‎ Parents choose home schooling for several reasons. Some choose it because of their religious beliefs. Others say it provides more time for the family to be together. They say the home offers a better place for learning. Some parents believe home schooling avoids problems of rational schools. Critics, however, say children need to attend school with other children.‎ ‎ All fifty American states and the District of Columbia permit home schooling. Some states do not require much preparation by parents or testing of children. Other states have more requirements ‎ for home schooling. Home schooling in the United States began when the country was established. In farm areas, people often lived far from a school. Widespread home schooling took place until about the middle of the nineteenth century. Then, in 1852, the state of Massachusetts passed the first law requiring children to attend school.‎ ‎ Over the years, the American public education system strengthened and grew. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, some Americans believed that traditional education was not helping their children. So a number of parents began home schooling.‎ ‎ Home schooling expert Linda Dobson says many people have helped the movement grow. She says many kinds of people have joined the movement. These include rich people and poor people. They represent many races, religions and political beliefs. Ms. Dobson says the number of home-schooled children has increased by an estimated fifteen to twenty percent each year during the last fifteen years.‎ ‎25. But few would imagine having it returned after a nearly seven-decade gap. Edward Parker dropped his wallet in 1950 into an inaccessible spot behind a bookshelf, while working as an electrician, repairing World War Two bomb damage in the palace. The wallet stayed there until this year when a builder, doing some restoration work, finally found it.‎ ‎ The wallet is a time capsule. Its leather and webbing has long ago started to disintegrate. But it contains numerous pictures of family, invoices, receipts, old union cards, results of a chest X-ray (sent to him in 1948, the same year as the NHS was founded), a national service card dated 9 December 1944 and a medical insurance card. His business cards—E Parker, Electrical Contractor—seem almost original. Reflecting the typical methods of contact of the time, they have an address but no telephone number.‎ ‎ A month ago I was speaking a press officer Lambeth Palace and he mentioned that the wallet had just been handed in. We thought it might be nice to try and work out whose it was and give it back to the family. Edward Parker is a pretty common name, but his medical card contained two places of residence—Poets Road and Springdale Road in north London. From this, Islington Council were able to find details of a marriage between Edward Parker and Constance Butler in 1947.‎ ‎ That information was enough to work out that he was still alive and in a care home in Essex, so I went to visit him. Now 89, Edward has dementia (痴呆), but he was clearly happy to get the wallet and in particular, the photographs back. He pointed out pictures of his mother and father, his brother, his cousins and his wife Constance, who was with him when I visited. He hadn't seen a picture of his father since he lost the wallet, Constance, 90, says. ‎ ‎28. It can be inferred that Edward Parker ___________.‎ ‎ A. always lost his wallet B. once participated in World War II ‎ C. once worked as a builder D. once worked as electrical technician ‎29. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?‎ ‎ A. The producer of the wallet. B. The raw material of the wallet.‎ ‎ C. The concrete contents of the wallet. D. The high-quality shape of the wallet.‎ ‎30. What does the underlined word “disintegrate” in the second paragraph mean?‎ ‎ A. Maintain. B. Damage. C. Disappear. D. Destroy.‎ ‎31. What plays key role in returning the wallet?‎ ‎ A. Medical card. B. Business card. ‎ C. Old union card. D. National service card. ‎ D About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder jaguar xke, which was only two months old. He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. as his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and — whump! —It hit the jag’s shiny black side door! Screech...!!!! Immediately josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?!” Building up a head of steam, he went on. “That’s my new jag, that brick you threw is gonna cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it?"‎ ‎ “Please, mister, please...I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do!” begged the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop!” tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister”, he said. “He rolled of the curb (路沿) and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” sobbing, the boy asked the businessman, “ Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.” Moved beyond words, the young businessman tried hard to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Straining, he lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapers and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be Ok. He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.‎ ‎ It was a long walk back to the black, shining 12 cylinder jaguar xke — a long and slow walk. Josh never did fix the side door of his jaguar. He kept the dent (凹痕) to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get his attention. When you choose to be a student of life, you open yourself to limitless opportunities.‎ Explore the world. Don’t limit yourself to your hometown or to the city you got your first job. __37__ It doesn’t have to be just one town or one apartment complex. Backpacking may not be for everyone, but it’s not the only way you can see the world. Travelling doesn’t just have to be going overseas but also dropping by many states. Culture exists not just in a country but even in small communities.‎ Acquire new life skills. Maybe it’s time that you finally learn how to fix a broken tap or even fix the faulty light in your bathroom. You can finally cross out your bucket list items(许愿清单)that have been there forever. Learn how to drive a car or ride a bike. There are definitely things you don’t know how to do, and you have a lifetime ahead of you to learn. __38__‎ Be cultured. Watch as many movies and read as many books as possible. And it doesn’t mean that you only watch the ones with high ratings from critics. Books and movies are the fruits of the writers’ or the makers’ life experiences and understanding of their surroundings. Movies and books are a good look into how people interpret the world.‎ ‎__39__ For some individuals, to grow older means to keep your circle of friends down to a few, but that shouldn’t stop you from meeting new people. Widen your circle by allowing people into your life and letting them get to know you. Widening your circle to people from all walks of life gives you a bigger and better side of the world. ‎ Do many first's. When was the last time you did something for the first time? __40__ It can be as simple as watching a movie alone or as big as trying bungee jumping. Doing something for the first time doesn’t need to have a life-changing effect. It can be a simple realization that apparently, going to a film screening by yourself isn’t so bad. ‎ So, there are so much more to learn, especially now that we’re virtually connected to everyone in the world. If you can’t think of the answer, maybe you need to go out and try something new.‎ D. Go beyond the place you consider home, because home can be many places. ‎ E. You don’t always need a deep realization for everything you do. ‎ F. Lessons are not limited to our academic studies.‎ G. It’s never too late to start learning something new.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ In December 2013, my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas.
