B Which boy hasn’t dreamed of being a cool secret agent? The wonderful fighting abilities and the world-saving adventures are much more colourful than most people’s everyday lives. Well, Cody Banks is just like any other boy, except that he is not just dreaming. He has a big secret his friends never know about. He was trained to be a spy by a special CIA programme, which was made to look like a summer camp. He learned high-speed driving, hand-to-hand fighting and the use of high-tech tools. After proving he could become a young hero by saving a baby from a runaway car, Banks gets his first real task. He must make friends with a popular girl at school, Natalie Connors. Then, he must spy on her father, a scientist who has developed a dangerous technology. Banks must stop a group of bad people from forcing Natalie’s father into using the technology to endanger the world. The CIA may have taught him first-class self-defence moves, but they didn’t show him how to talk to girls. Banks has zero ability when it comes to dealing with girls. How can he get around his problem and get an invitation to the girl’s upcoming birthday party? Will he finally become Natalie’s boyfriend and find out whatever he can about her father’s work? Agent Cody Banks has everything that young people are interested in big explosions, breath-taking performances and funny girl-dating experiences. It was listed No.2 in the American box office last week. “This story is interesting and fun for the whole family to enjoy, and especially cool for young boys,” said Paul Perkins, a film reviewer in the US. 24. What is Banks’ first real task? A. To test a high-tech tool. B. To save a baby from a car. C. To study a new technology. D. To watch a scientist secretly. 25. Banks wanted to go to Natalie’s birthday party to______ . A. meet her father face to face B. know more people in her family C. find something about her father’s work D. steal some information from her father 26. What is considered as a great danger in the text? A. The technology developed by Natalie’s father. B. An explosion set off by some bad people. C. The CIA’s training of Banks for its tasks. D. Banks’ stopping bad people. 27. What is the purpose of the text? A. To make known the work of the CIA. B. To tell the story about a cool boy. C. To show the dark side of science. D. To introduce a new film. C Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation? UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”. Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest. “We didn’t take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future. 28. The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 3 probably means that trees ________. A. compete for survival B. protect their own wealth C. depend on each other D. provide support for dying trees 29. “Mother trees” are extremely important because they________. A. pass on nutrition to young trees B. seem more likely to be cut down by humans C. look the largest in size in the forest D. know more about the complex “tree societies” 30. The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to ________. A. how young trees survive B. how trees grow old C. how forestry industry develops D. how “tree societies” work 31. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans B. Young Trees Are in Need of Protection C. Trees Are More Awesome Than You Think D. Trees Contribute to Our Society D There is something very wrong with the system of values in a society that has only unkind terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious and academically serious. We all know what a nerd is: someone who wears thick glasses and ugly clothes; someone who knows all the answers to the chemistry or math homework but can never get a date on a Saturday night. And a geek, according to Webster’s New World Dictionary, is a street performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens. It is an obvious fact about our language and our culture that someone devoted to the pursuit (追求) of knowledge is compared to such a strange person. Even at a famous educational institution like Harvard, anti-intellectualism is widespread: Many students are ashamed to admit how much they study. The same thing happens in US primary and high schools. Enough is enough. The anti-intellectual values that have spread throughout American society must be fought. There are very few countries in the world where anti-intellectualism runs as high in popular culture as it does in the US. In most industrialized nations, especially in East Asia, a kid who studies hard is praised. But in America, average professional ballplayers are much more respected and better paid than professors of the best universities. How can a country where typical parents are ashamed of their children studying mathematics instead of going dancing be expected to compete in the technology race with Japan? How long can America remain a world-class power if we constantly put social skills and physical strength over academic achievement and intellectual ability? Do we really expect to take the lead largely by bringing in our scientists and intellectuals from abroad, as we have done for a major portion of this century without making an effort to also cultivate (培养) a pro-intellectual culture at home? 32. The definition from the Webster’s New World Dictionary is quoted to ______. A. show that vocabulary use is always up-to-date B. prove that words used in this article are accurate C. convince readers with reference from a dictionary D. show that people look down upon those studying hard 33. What can be learned from Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4? A. The US government doesn’t mean to spend much money on education. B. Anti-intellectualism is not popular in industrialized countries in East Asia. C. Few students work hard for their grade in famous universities like Harvard. D. Professors earn more than professional basketball players on average in the US. 34. What is probably the author’s attitude towards the anti-intellectual values? A. Doubtful B. Supportive. C. Concerned. D. Objective. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. America needs its nerds. B. Don’t laugh at nerds. C. What is anti-intellectualism? D. Why does society avoid nerds? 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Make Wise Decisions We make decisions every day; everything we say and do is the result of a decision. __36__ However, there are some steps you can follow. ● List your options (选择). It may appear that there is only one course of action, but that is not necessarily true. No matter how limited your situation seems, try to make a list of options. Brainstorm, and write down every idea that comes to your mind, as crazy as it may seem. You can always cross it off the list later, but crazy ideas can bring creative solutions. Once you have your list, ask others for suggestions. __37__ ● Weigh the possible results. For every option, list every possible result, and label it as positive or negative. __38__ You can put a plus sign next to each positive result and a minus sign next to each negative one. Give two pluses or minuses to the best and the worst. ● __39__ This is the hardest step, but there will hopefully be a decision on your list that is supported by both logic and intuition (直觉). If you still can't decide, ask for advice from people you trust. If need be, let them be the tie-breakers — it’s better than flipping (掷) a coin. ● Once you have made a decision, carry it out wholeheartedly. At this stage, don't let yourself be confused by thinking about all the choices you didn’t pick. In the end, remember to evaluate your decision afterward.__40__ By drawing wisdom from every decision you make, you can ensure that every choice has at least one positive result. A. Make a choice. B. Think about who is affected. C. There is a simple way to do this. D. You should hope for the best and prepare for the worst. E. There are no easy formulas (公式) for making the right decision. F. Sometimes they can offer the most creative ideas. G. If you don’t evaluate your decision afterward, you won't learn anything from it. For some time I’ve had a church member provide me with a rose to pin on the lapel (翻领) of my suit every Sunday.
