A visit to my father’s grave is often a good chance to cry and when I leave I feel a little more at peace. But this time was different. I drove home and every night for the rest of that week, I cried.‎ On Saturday, I watched a TV program teaching baking, and then I started to learn. By the end of the weekend, I had a table covered with sweet treats. I packaged them up in tins, attached a label to each of them with “winter love” on it, and dropped them off on a few of my neighbors’ porches. It shocked me how much it lightened my mood, seeing a small package lost on a porch. The thanks I received later from the neighbors made me light up. It felt so good, and it distracted me from my dark thoughts.‎ By January I had developed a routine: on Sunday I’d bake cookies and package them up, and on Monday I’d deliver them. Every week I added a few different people to my delivery route. Then things started showing up on my doorstep - a homemade cup, a pair of socks with cookies and even a gift certificate from the local bookstore. Every single one melted my heart. But what I really appreciated was how people began to share their own stories of mental health with me. There is no greater honor than to be trusted with another’s life. I was overwhelmed by the love and care of my community. It humbled me that something so simple had created such incredible kindness.‎ I was shifting into a new season of light, while letting go of a season of darkness. It reminded me that there is beauty in being kind and that life is tough, but there is a quiet strength in knowing you are not alone.‎ 1. She was stressed due to her father’s death.‎ D. She recovered after visiting her father’s grave.‎ 2. After she started sharing cookies with neighbors, the author .‎ A. gained trust and care from them B. added other things to her delivery list C. felt her life was no longer busy or stressful D. found some of them had more mental problems than her 3. What is the main purpose of this passage?‎ A. To express gratitude to caring neighbors.‎ B. To share how being kind helped her regain hope.‎ C. To speak of the benefits of baking cookies at home.‎ D. To show the importance of a trusted community.‎ B We all put off things in one way or another: finishing a final paper hours before the deadline, or putting off that trip to the supermarket until the refrigerator shelves are completely empty. Psychologists call that procrastination, which is to delay doing something that you should do, usually because you don’t want to do it.‎ In recent years, psychologists around the world have been asking: what else is there behind procrastination? “Procrastination is based on our genetics”, says Sharad Paul, MD, author of The Genetics of Health. If you like to put things off or surf the internet instead of getting work done, you might be able to blame your ancestors.‎ While procrastination seems like a character weakness, it developed for a reason. “The genes progressed down generations because these people were still hidden in caves fearful of animals that fed on meat. They were always saying: ‘My tools are not sharp enough. I’d better spend more time perfecting this spear.’” says Sharad Paul. “These people survived more because they avoided conflicts, and these genes were handed down to future generations.”‎ While it’s highly attractive to simply blame your parents, the buck stops with you. Paul says, “People think that genes determine their fate. This is only true if their actions lead in that direction.”‎ ‎“Anything can be changed or improved, including our gene expressions”, says Paul, who likes to refer to the 10,000-hours theory Malcom Gladwell shares in his book The Outliers, suggesting that talent is made with practice and commitment, not a born character. The best thing to overcome procrastination is to get moving. “Start slow and keep building up perseverance levels. There are many different forms of perseverance exercise and many involve leg movements. Pick one that you like. An average of just 30 minutes a day has been shown to be beneficial.‎ Paul says, “If you have the right genes, this could be perhaps a bit faster, but not by much.” Therefore, there is hope for us all.‎ 1. Why does the author use examples in the first paragraph?‎ A. To make readers familiar with themselves.‎ B. To introduce the topic of procrastination.‎ C. To show our bad behaviours of procrastination.‎ D. To explain why we have the habit of procrastination.‎ 2. The underlined sentence in paragraph 4 probably means “ ”.‎ A. Genes from your parents are to blame.‎ B. Your actions make you highly attractive.‎ C. You should take the responsibility for yourself.‎ D. You should stop throwing bucks at your parents.‎ 3. What’s best title of the passage?‎ A. Genes: Weakness or Hope? B. Genes: Prevention or Cure?‎ C. Procrastination: Reason and Solution. D. Procrastination: Example and History.‎ C In most art museums, the paintings on the wall just look flat, but sometimes visitors come across an image that appears to be three-dimensional. The artist has cleverly used colors, lines, and shading to give the painting some depth, making it more realistic. The artistic technique of creating three-dimensional images of something on a flat surface is called trompe I’oeil. Today, some artists are adapting the idea of trompe I’oeil to make things become invisible, which is called camouflage art.‎ In nature, using camouflage not only allows insects and animals to hide from their natural enemies but also allows them to get close enough to surprise other insects or smaller animals that they want to catch and eat. Artists are not hiding or preparing to attack. Instead, they are using the idea of camouflage to make urban spaces look nicer or to make statements with their art.‎ It is not difficult to find things that we would like to make disappear such as the dull wall of a large industrial building or the poles carrying electricity wires. Artists can make these things more interesting and in some cases less visible. In many urban areas, large buildings have been painted with amazing pictures that trick our eyes. Thus, ordinary brick walls are transformed into interesting works of art.‎ Some artists include camouflage in their work to say something about the modern world we live in. For example, American artist Trina Merry camouflages people so that they disappear in the landscapes she photographs. Her latest series, New York City, blends ( 融 合 ) women and their environment to create images that closely examine the relationship between people and where they live. “My series shows respect for Big Apple women who feel the need to blend in with everyone else in New York,” Merry says. “I think many women move here hoping to live a city life when the reality is that most women have to change their fancy designer heels on the subway for more practical sneakers.”‎ 1. Which of the following words best describe camouflage art?‎ A. Flat. B. Invisible. C. Dull. D. Disappointing.‎ 2. What is the purpose of using camouflage in nature?‎ A. To make animals look nicer. B. To express people’s artistic concept.‎ C. To surprise smaller animals or insects. D. To protect animals from natural enemies.‎ 3. From the last paragraph, we know that .‎ A. Merry feel the need to fit in with others in the city B. most women wear fancy dresses in their daily life in the city C. women in New York have succeeded in being a part of the city D. New York city can partly mirror people’s life in modern society 4. This article is mainly about .‎ A. a form of art B. the series of paintings C. a famous artist D. the women in New York 第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ University Student Life in North America For many westerners, going to university is a very exciting time in life. 31 Other students choose to live away home even if they go to a university that is close to the parents’ house. It is common to see two lovers hand in hand as they walk down the street. 33 Generally, universities also do not mind if students date.‎ In the first year of university, students usually live in residence where they meet people. Most residence rooms are double rooms where two students share one room. Sometimes students can get single rooms if they are lucky. 34 In these houses, each student has their own bedroom, but usually shares a bathroom, kitchen, and living room with other students. It is getting more and more common to have girls and boys living in the same house.‎ In the west, universities have many extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. 35 If they are not your thing, then you can do photography, art, drama, or many other things.‎ In short, students in western universities have a lot of fun, freedom and interesting experiences.‎ Working out is becoming a more and more popular activity.‎ A. Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how could she do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye?” and laughed at me.‎ I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don’t you have the other eye? You’re only gonna make me a joke!” My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, “I’m so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I will leave right now. Sorry!” My mom turned around and staggered away.‎ For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University. I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. I never went back to visit my mom.‎ Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. And still with her one eye! Reminded instantly of my dark past and embarrassment, I felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. Overwhelmed with rage, I growled at her, “Who are you? How dare you come to my house!” My mom narrowed her eye and opened her mouth but nothing came out there. Dead silence! Tears streaming down the gloomy winkled face, she thrust a letter into my hand, turned around and staggered away, head deep down. Heart stung by her withered back, I just cast a glance at the letter. My mom gave that eye to me! My world shattered.‎ Holding the letter, I cried for the person who only lived for me. How she wanted her own son to see the world clearly! But how deeply I had hurt her! Heart knotted with deep regret, I called out loudly, “Mom!” I ran after my mom, grabbed her and knelt down. “Mom, would you forgive me and accept me again?” Tears dried and her expression one of forgiving, a smile stole into her cheeks. It’s never too old-fashioned to say mom’s love is the greatest in the world.‎ ‎ 听力录音原文 ‎(Text1)‎ W: You said you’re going to take a vacation at the end of June.‎ M: Yes. Just a moment, there were a couple of calls for you while you were out. A woman named Melissa phoned. She says she can’t make it to the meeting tomorrow.‎ M: Any other messages?‎ W: Yeah. Someone called about the apartment in the town center. His name is Jackie, but he didn’t leave his number.‎ M: Didn’t Angelica call me?‎ W: Yeah. She called about the party tonight. She wanted you to phone her back. And a guy called Simon said he would return your call at around 5: 00.‎ ‎(Text 7)‎ M: Jennifer, can you help me put this software program in my computer? I followed the directions, but I still can’t get it right.‎ W: I am sorry, but I have to prepare some meeting materials because I have a weekly meeting at 10: 00. It should be finished by1:30.‎ M: Oh, I am supposed to have this report finished by noon. What should I do with it?‎ W: You should check to see if Anderson is free. He is good at that.‎ ‎(Text 8)‎ W: One day I’d like to buy an electric car. They’re much cleaner than petrol cars. But I’m not sure if I’ll see many on the road in the near future.‎ M: But you can already buy them.‎ W: Really?‎ M: Sure, and they have the most powerful type of engine. Unfortunately they’re much more expensive than petrol cars. But what makes me anxious is that when they’re cheaper, more people will buy them. With more cars on the road, we’ll have more traffic jams, especially at eight in the morning. It’s the worst time of the day.‎ W: Yes. I try to avoid the rush hour now. I leave home before seven.‎ M: In Melbourne, drivers are not allowed to park cars along busy roads during rush hours to create an extra passage for traffic. This town needs better public transport. The buses don’t go to the right places. And they are always late. Last week I waited for a No. 29 bus for over an hour...‎ ‎(Text 9)‎ W: Zoltan, you’re studying snakes all around the world. So, you have to travel a lot. Do you ever take holidays?‎ M: No, not often. My work is also my hobby. I’ve been to Paris, Rome, to the Pyramids and I went sightseeing there but it was always because my work took me there. For my last trip I was in Sudan and I went looking for snakes.‎ W: But you must take a holiday sometimes?‎ M: Well, once or twice I have traveled to places not connected to snakes. For example, I spent a holiday in the Seychelles with some friends. They enjoyed the beach and the markets while I went diving with my underwater camera.‎ W: Is that your most important thing when you travel---- your camera?‎ M: Yes, my camera and my sleeping bag. With a sleeping bag, you can sleep anywhere you want W: So, do you ever stay in hotels?‎ M: If I go with friends, I might stay at a hotel or a guesthouse, but normally I’m on my own so I rarely book a hotel in advance. I can fall asleep in a sleeping bag anytime and everywhere.‎ ‎(Text 10)‎ M: I hope you’ re all enjoying your new jobs here at the college. Now I’d like to tell you a little about our staff development training programs. To begin with, we expect you to attend team meetings. These take place in the last week of each term. They will give you the chance to share experience with colleagues, discuss problems and inform us of any training requirements. If training is required, the college will pay the costs. The members of staff who attend training sessions will be asked to complete a form about their experiences and to share them with their colleagues at their next team meeting. The all-college training days take place twice a year and are held over an entire day. Members of staff can choose from kinds of events the ones they’d like to attend. You’ll get a lot of fresh information through them. Most importantly, our all-college training programs make sure our students get excellent service from us. Finally, each team will be given the chance to enjoy an “away day”. These are full-day events, sometimes held at a hotel or a holiday center. However, most teams like to spend the day doing activities such as ice-skating, or rock climbing, so we plan to spend the “away day” in the Forest Park this year. And the college covers all the costs for these events.‎
