英语卷·2018届河北省定州中学高二(承智班)下学期开学考试(2017-02)
河北定州中学2016-2017学年第二学期高二承智班英语开学考试 一、阅读理解 It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip t Angola in 1997, to support the Red Cross’s campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmine landmines(地雷)Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. “I knew the statistics,” she said. “But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her.” The Princess concluded with a simple message: “We must stop landmines”. And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message. But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as “very ill-informed” and a “loose cannon”(乱放炮的人). The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms: “This is a distraction(干扰), we do not need. All I’m trying to do is help.” Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged(显现出来)that the Princess’s trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government’s policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government. To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkidnd, claimed that the Princess’s views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was “working towards” a worldwide ban. The Defense Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was “a misinterpretation or misunderstanding.” For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people an their problems. 1.Princess Diana paid a visit to Angola in 1997 A. to clarify(澄清)the British government’s stand on landmines B. to establish her image as a friend of landmine victims C. to investigate the sufferings of landmine victims there D. to voice her support for a total ban of landmines 2.What did Diana mean when she said “…putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me”(Line 5, Para. 1)? He thought back more than twenty years to when he was a boy living in a small red brick house on this very street. He recalled the flower garden, the swing his dad made, and the bike he had saved up for months to buy. The man shrugged impatiently, for the brightness of those pictures hurt him, and his memory traveled on another ten years. He had a job by then, plenty of friends and started to come home less. He did not really want to remember those years, nor the day when, because of debts, he had gone home planning to ask for money. He felt embarrassed, but he knew exactly where his dad kept the money. When his parents stepped out of the room, he took what he wanted and left. That was the last time he had seen them. Ashamed, he went abroad, and his parents knew nothing about the years of wandering or time in prison. But locked in his cell he often thought of home. Once free, he would love to see his parents again, if they were still alive, and still wanted to see him. When his prison time was up, he found a job, but couldn’t settle. Something was drawing him home. He did not want to arrive penniless, so he hitchhiked most of the long journey back. But less than a mile from his destination he started to feel sick with doubt. Could they ever accept this man who had so bitterly disappointed them? He spent most of that day sitting under a tree. That evening he posted a letter which, although short, had taken him hours to write. It ended with: I know it is unreasonable of me to suppose you want to see me ... so it’s up to you. I’ll come early Thursday morning. If you want me home, hang a white handkerchief in the window of my old bedroom. If it’s there, I’ll come in; if not, I’ll wave good-bye and go. And now it was Thursday morning and he was sitting on the pavement at the end of the street. Finally he got up and walked slowly toward the old house. He drew a long breath and looked. His parents were taking no risks. ________________________________________ The man threw his head back, gave a cry of relief and ran straight through the open front door. 6.Why did the man shrug impatiently (paragraph 2) while he was thinking of his childhood? A. The thoughts made him angry. B. He felt he had wasted time. C. He was anxious to go home. D. The sweet memory caused him much pain. 7.Why did it take him hours to write the letter? A. He doubted if his parents still lived in that house. B. He had much news to tell his parents. C. He felt ashamed to ask for forgiveness. D. He was longing to return home and felt excited. 8.Which of the following best fits into paragraph 8? A. Every inch of the house was covered in white. Sheets, pillowcases and table clothes had been placed on every window and door, making it look like a snow house. B. The house before him was just as he remembered: the red bricks, the brown door and nothing else. C. A colorful blanket was over the front door. On it, in large letters, was written, “Welcome home, son”. D. A police car was parked in the drive way, and two officers stood at the front door. 9.The best title of the passage is _______. A. Leaving Home Mike the Headless Chicken Festival In 1945, farmer Lloyd Olsen attempted to cut off the head of Mike, a chicken, so his wife could cook it up for dinner. However, the bird didn’t die and lived another year and a half, making regular trips to the fair, where people paid a quarter to see the amazing headless bird. Today, the spirit of Mike the Headless Chicken is celebrated with a two-day May festival in Fruita, Colorado, which includes live music, a golf tournament and lots of delicious chicken. Roswell UFO Festival In the summer of 1947, a flying saucer (碟状物) crashed on a large farm outside the town of Roswell, New Mexico. The government says it didn’t come from outer space, while many top UFO researchers believe it did. Knowing a good thing when it crashes in their backyard, the citizens of Roswell celebrate the event every July with a three-day festival that features a costume contest, a parade and other activities. Be careful, though — that strange little person next to you could be from another planet! World’s Largest Rattlesnake Roundup The rattlesnake, a poisonous American snake, serves an important function in nature by keeping small pests under control, but when their numbers grow too large, they can cause serious problems for farmers. That’s why every March the residents of Sweetwater, Texas, host a three-day festival in association with the town’s annual rattlesnake hunt. Visitors can learn about rattlesnakes, take a bus tour of their natural habitat, participate in a rattlesnake eating contest and so on. Bug Fest Every September, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh sponsors a daylong festival that focuses on something most people try to avoid: insects. Visitors can hold bugs that are not native, cheer on racing insects and learn about beekeeping. But the highlight for many is Café Insecta, where bugs are the main ingredient in a variety of tasty dishes. 10.T Lloyd Olsen cut off the chicken’s head because ________. Not only is it unable to see, but because it cannot receive the visual stimulus(刺激)from its environment that a sighted child does, it is likely to be slow in intellectual development. Now the ten-month old son of Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Daughters is the subject of an unusual psychological experiment designed to prevent a lag(滞后)in the learning process. With the aid of a sonar-type electronic that he wears on his head, infant(婴儿) Dennis is learning to identify the people and objects in the world around him by means of echoes(回声). The device is an improvement of the “Sonicguide”, an instrument produced by Telesensory Systems, Inc., of Palo Alto, Calif, and used by blind adults in addition to a smart or guide dog. As adapted for Dennis, it consists of a battery-powered system about the size of a half dollar that is on a headgear. A transmitter sends out an ultrasonic(超声的) pulse that creates an 80 degree cone of sound at 6 feet. Echoes from objects within the cone are perceived (felt) as sounds that vary in pitch(音调) and volume(音量) with the size and distance of the object. The closer an object is, the lower the pitch, and the larger the object, the louder the signal. Hard surfaces produce a sharp ping, while soft ones send back signals with a slightly fuzzy quality. An object slightly to the right of Denny’s sends back a louder sound to his right ear than to the left. Thus , by simply moving his head right and left and up and down, he can not only locate an object but also get some notion of its shape and size, thanks to the varying qualities of sounds reaching his ears as the cone of ultrasound(超声波) passes its edges. Dennis likes to use the device to play a kind of peek-a-boo with his mother. Standing on her knee and facing her directly, he receives a strong signal in both ears. By turning his head away, he makes her seem to disappear. “From the first time he wore it,” says Mrs. Daughters, “it was like a light going on in his head.” What remains to be determined is how well the device will help Dennis cope with his surroundings as he begins to walk and venture further into his environment. Meanwhile, Telesensory, Inc, is working on the development of sonar(声纳) device with somewhat the same sensitivity as Dennis’s for use by school-age children. 14.Dr. and Mrs. Daughters’ research is directed to ________. A. helping the blind to see and learn as well as others B. benefiting the learning process of blind children C. solving blind children’s psychological problems D. finding out how children develop intellectually 15.Infant Dennis becomes the subject of the experiment most probably because ________. A. he already lags behind the sighted children B. he leads a life as normal as any other children C. he is at the early stage of the learning process D. he has the aid of a sonar-type electronic device 16.What can we learn about infant Dennis’ device? A. Its first design was designed for blind adults. B. Its battery is as small as a half-dollar coin. C. It is functionally similar to a sane and guide dog. D. It has been improved by Telesensory Systems, Inc. 17.In the third paragraph, “its edges” refers to ___________ . A. the edge of an object B. the edge of the device C. the boundary of Dennis’ movement D. the boundary of the sound pitch. 二、完形填空 The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems ____. Your parents are all busy during working days; during the weekends, you may want to hang out with them but they may have to work extra hours. This is not uncommon. In China, both of the parents have their jobs. Most of the parents try their best to offer their children comfortable circumstances, but they seldom have time to stay with their children. A recent survey done in the US found that more than half of American parents spend less than three hours having fun with their children each week. As the Daily Mail noted: Families are spending little quality time creating bonds and precious memories together during the week because of the demands of modern life. 1.D 2.D 3.A 4.B 5.C 6.D 7.C 8.A 9.B 10.A 11.B 12.C 13.D 14.B 15.C 16.A 17.A 18.B 19.D 20.C 21.A 22.C 23.A 24.D 25.B 26.A 27.C 28.B 29.C 30.D 31.D 32.A 33.D 34.B 35.B 36.C 37.C 38. 【小题1】gives→gave 【小题2】them→it 【小题3】he was去掉was 【小题4】after→before 【小题5】full→fully 【小题6】such→so 【小题7】lose→losing 【小题8】like后面加a 【小题9】time→times 【小题10】for→to 39.CAFDG 40. Nowadays, it is not uncommon that parents spend little time accompanying their children, which may result from the demands of modern life and some other reasons. There are many factors accounting for this phenomenon. First, in contemporary society parents are facing more stress from living and work than before, so they have to spend most of their time making money. In addition, parents today are more easily distracted by various electronic products when keeping their children company. Take my own experience for example. Once upon a time, I got into trouble in my studies. It was my parents’ company and comfort that had a great effect on my regaining self-confidence. Plain and peaceful as it was, this experience left an unforgettable impression on me, which is of great significance to my growth. To conclude, it’s vital for parents to spend more time with their children. However busy parents are, they should afford their time to accompany their children.(158)查看更多
