No one in the family seems to know when she started collecting them, or exactly how many she had. My grandmother died just over two years ago. At 91, she had spent 30 years without her right leg, which was removed due to cancer the year I was born. She was a poet, an artist, a food lover and a salt cellar collector. The funny thing about the salts, as she called them — I never once heard her say salt cellar — was that although everybody knew they were her hobby and everyone was always searching for them at yard sales or in stores, nobody seemed to know what they meant to her and they just wanted to make her happy. Grandma kept her salts in a dark wooden corner display case in the living room. Since her death the case has remained exactly as she left it. Grandpa tries his best to preserve his memories of her just as they are. Now I am collecting, too. Collecting memories about my grandmother’s hobby, a way she spent her time. And as I hold one of them in my hand, I picture her holding it in her hand on the day she got it. She is smiling. My mother and her two sisters all have small collections, but my mother admits that she was more interested in finding salts to send to Grandma. Grandma once wrote a poem titled “When April Comes”. The poem contains the line, “When April comes and I am not around, remember me when daffodils are found.” Now, Grandpa is working on a poem with the line, “April came and you were not around”. But she was, somehow. She was there in the memories left behind by her possessions. 25. In writing the text, the author expressed . A. her sadness at losing her grandma B. her desire to collect more salt cellars C. her love for her grandma D. her curiosity about her grandma’s possessions 26. The underlined part “her possessions” in the last paragraph refers to _________. A. Grandma’s experience B. Grandma’s hobby C. Grandma’s talent D. Grandma’s strong will 27. It can be inferred from the text that the author’s family . A. are very proud of their interesting family history B. value the wonderful poems Grandma wrote C. are much influenced by Grandma’s interest D. know much about grandparents’ love 28. What would be the best title for the text? A. Grandma’s Salt Cellar Collection B. The Mystery of Grandma’s Salt Cellars C. Grandparents’ Lifelong Devotion D. A Family’s Collection History C The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature. David Tillman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized(工业化), population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet. The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tillman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease. Unfortunately, when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on. And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the world's population grows, more forests and tropical(热带的)areas will become farmland for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now. Mr. Tillman calls the link between diet, the environment and human health, "a trilemma": a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible settlement is leaving the Western diet behind. 29. According to the passage, more greenhouse gas might be given off in the future from _____. A. transportation B. developing countries C. agriculture D. developed countries 30. David Tilman believes that__________. A. diet, the environment and human health are closely connected B. the Western diet is the only choice as the nation industrializes C. people in tropical areas are more likely to have heart disease D. traditional diets are more balanced than the Western diet 31. We can infer from the passage that ___________. A. industrialization contributes to the spread of the Western diet B. overweight people are at higher risk of infectious diseases C. the examined information comes from developing countries D. Nigeria has the largest number of diabetes cases 32. The main purpose of the passage is to___________. A. call on us to protect the environment B. warn us of the danger of the Western diet C. remind us of the importance of health D. advise us to have a balanced diet D The Poetry Foundation, recently named American poet Jack Prelutsky as the nation's first children's poet laureate (桂冠诗人). The group created the award as a way to increase children's love of poetry. As children's poet laureate, Jack Prelutsky will give two public readings in the next two years. He will also advise the Poetry Foundation about children's literature and take part in projects concerning children and poetry. Jack Prelutsky has been writing poetry for children for over forty years. He has written more than thirty five books of poems. His first book was called A Gopher in the Garden. It was published in 1967. His latest is called Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant and Other Poems. Jack Prelutsky is well known for creating new words by combining two words to create a new kind of creature. For example, he combined “radish” with “shark” to get “radishark”. “Lion” and “broccoli” became “broccolion”. He also created “umbrellaphant”, a mixture of the words “umbrella” and “elephant”. Jack Prelutsky says that children like his poems because he writes about things they care about. Poetry researchers say that Jack Prelutsky's poems recognize children's feelings. An example of this is the poem My Sister Is a Werewolf which is about how it feels to be different. Jack Prelutsky also writes poems about American holidays. His poem It's Halloween is a very famous one about the holiday celebrated at the end of October. 33. Which of the following can be the BEST title of the passage? A. Poems with New Words Grow Popular B. First Children's Poet Laureate Named C. Children's Love for Poetry Increased D. Jack Prelutsky Awarded Nationwide 34. What can we infer from the passage? A. It was A Gopher in the Garden that brought him fame. B. The poet will be kept busy with a lot of activities. C. Jack Prelutsky will no longer write about American holidays. D. The poem It's Halloween must have been written for adults. 35. Put the following items in RIGHT order according to the passage. a. two public readings b. A Gopher in the Garden c.
