Twice a year, his magazine, La Hulotte, focuses on an animal or plant native to the French countryside. The 100th edition was published in November. The magazine counts more than 150,000 subscribers in many countries, and is doing very well financially. Deom says it all began in January 1972, when he was teaching science in a one-room schoolhouse here. “It upset me how the forests and swamps were beginning to be ruined. The word ‘ecology’ (生态学) didn’t really exist yet Some friends and I wanted to call attention to the issue. So we said, let’s educate the kids. They’re ready to hear our message.” So he took a step into the unknown, planning to publish his nature journal. Deom does all the research and writing and the illustrations (插图) of the magazine by hand. He combines science and humor in his writing and drawing to describe the daily life and sufferings of his creatures. Animals you might overlook or consider dull are magically and vividly brought to life in La Hulotte. “I try to write about animals and plants that are easy to find because I want kids to put on boots, take a magnifying glass, go to the woods and fields to observe and be amazed by what they find,” Deom says. And it seems to work. Biologist Jerome Fournier began subscribing to La Hulotte when he was just eight years old. “For me it was the first contact with nature when I was a child. And maybe it’s the beginning for my life of scientist. I think so.” What’s amazing is its approach. The magazine has realistic drawings and also a little cast of cartoon creatures who comment on things and give a different views. You can read it as an adult or a child; it can be understood on two different levels. C Vinegar is great. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists, it may even help the planet’s population survive climate change. Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan proved that. They found growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate (醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive, “In the experiment, we targeted the staple foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize and proved successful” Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine. Kim has already been in touch with people around the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from farmers to companies and amateur gardeners. “Now we are trying to cooperate with them to make a method to apply this system, and make the process as simple as possible,” he said. Hopefully this means the end of hunger caused by bad weather in the future. 8. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Vinegar may help creatures survive bad weather. B. Vinegar is found in plants by Japanese scientists. C. Vinegar is very useful for cooking a good meal. D. Vinegar is mainly used by people to clean houses. 9. Scientists in Japan find from their studies that ________. A. the acetate can be used by farmers to replace the soil B. the plants treated with acetate could survive dry conditions C. soil condition could be changed by pouring vinegar continually D. the Arabidopsis could survive in dry weather because of the shape 10. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. How to decrease the cost is the main issue. B. Keeping plants alive means a lot for scientists. C. The method is promising especially in agriculture. D. It’s too difficult for farmers to accept the method. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Vinegar and Food B. Plants Need Water C. Japanese Scientists Find a Plant D. Vinegar Could End Hunger 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. We may agree that admitting mistakes and behaving in a genuine way is the right way to lead our lives, but is there something in our human nature that makes us immoral? For example, in some shops and car parks you can find an honesty box—a box where you pay for something by putting money in it—but it relies on you putting the right amount of cash in. This relies on people being honest and not trying to cheat but it does provide a temptation to get away with not paying the full amount. Philip Graves, a psychologist, suggests that this temptation is part of our evolution. He says: “We have evolved with the ability to be dishonest. It’s part of our evolutionary psychological make-up-because if we can gain an advantage over the people around us, we have a greater chance of surviving.” So why do we place such importance on being honest if we benefit from being dishonest? It’s because it is selfish behavior. If everybody acted selfishly and dishonestly all the time, the world would be a very unpleasant place. As Philip Graves says: “There is a balance to strike between the extent to which we can feather our own nest,so to speak, and the risk of being ostracized (排斥) by the group.” So, for societies to work together we need to trust each other and therefore we need to be honest. Being trustworthy with money is of course vital for an economy to survive. But being honest with words is another matter, saying what we think to someone can get us into hot water. However, a new anonymous messaging app has been designed that lets anyone with a link to your profile(简介) to send you a message without knowing who it’s from. The app now has 300 million users which perhaps indicates how honest we really like to be—but in all honesty, do you want to know what people think about you? Is honesty always the best policy? 12. What does an honesty box require people to do? A. Get the change out of it freely. B. Put the correct amount of money in it. C. Donate the pocket money to others. D. Pay a larger amount of money. 13. According to Philip Graves, being dishonest _______. A. is a disadvantage B. should be advocated C. is part of our evolution D. helps people survive, better 14. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The reason for being honest B. The benefit of being dishonest C. The outcome of selfishness D. The importance of group work 15. What can we infer from the text? A. Honesty is always the best policy. B. The author is in favor of dishonesty. C. The market of the new app is promising. D. Being honest with words is sometimes improper. 12. B 13. C 14. A 15. We call him Jack. 2. They made Li Lei their monitor. 二、宾语+形容词:常见的动词有:think, believe, leave, drive, make, keep, turn, wish, want等。 1. Do you think his idea wrong? 2. We must keep our classroom clean. 常见的副词有:down, up, here, there, home, in, out, anywhere等。 Let him in (out). 2. Mr. Li drove us home. 3. Have you seen him anywhere? 1. We found everything in good order. 2. I'll leave a message on his desk. 3. We have him as our good friend. 1. 要求带to的不定式作宾补的动词有:ask, tell, like, want, know, invite等。 A:We invited him to come to our school. B:He asked me to help him. 2. 要求不带to的不定式作宾补的动词有:see, watch, notice, look at, hear, listen to, feel, let, make, have等,这些词称为“感觉动词和使役动词”。 A:I often hear him read English in his room. B:Xiao Ming made the little boy laugh. She sometimes helps her mother (to) wash clothes. 1. I saw them playing football. 2. The news made him cry. 1. I had my bike stolen. 2. I saw the ground covered with snow. 1. I’ll have my watch mended. I’ll have him mend my bike. I want (wish) you to finish it by Thursday. I want it finished by Thursday. I saw him beating (beat) the boy. I saw the boy beaten by him. We found it impossible to get there before Sunday. (it为形式宾语,to get there …… 1. Call me what you like. (从句what you like为宾语me的补语。) 2. Mr. Li has made the factory what it is today. Dear Tony, ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Tony, I’m glad to know that you will come to our city again and learn Chinese during the coming vocation.
