He is considered one of the fathers of modern epidemiology (传染病), partly because of his work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in London, in 1854. His findings inspired fundamental changes in the water and waste systems of London, which led to similar changes in other cities, and a significant improvement in general public health around the world. Snow was born on 15 March, 1813 in York, England. He was the first of nine children born to William and Frances Snow in their North Street home. His neighborhood was one of the poorest in the city and was always in danger of flooding because of its nearness to the River Ouse. His father was a laborer who may have worked at a local coal yard, but later was a farmer in a small village to the north of York. Snow was baptized (洗礼) at All Saints’ Church, North Street, York. In 1837 Snow began working at the Westminster Hospital. Admitted as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England on 2 May 1838, he graduated from the University of London in December 1844 and was admitted to the Royal College of Physicians in 1850. In 1850 he was also one of the founding members of the Epidemiological Society of London, formed in response to the cholera outbreak of 1849. In 1830 Snow became a member of the Temperance Movement, and lived for a decade or so as a vegetarian (素食者) and teetotaler. In the mid-1840s his health decreased, and he returned to meat-eating and drinking wine. He kept drinking pure water (via boiling) throughout his adult life. He never married. Snow suffered a stroke while working in his London office on 10 June 1858. He was 45 years old at the time. He never recovered, dying on 16 June 1858. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery. 24.In the opinion of John Snow, which of the following one can be added to a healthy diet? A. drank tea a lot B.liked pure water C. was meat-eating D. cut out all alcohol C The day finally came. I was very excited as I stood in line, waiting to receive my high school diploma. I looked around at the graduating class of our small Christian school and wondered how we had grown up so fast. After that weekend we would go our separate ways. Many planned on attending college far away, as I did. Others had jobs lined up and few were thinking about marriage. Directly in front of me was a friend I’d known for six years; we had been on many adventures together. He grinned, looking a little smug (洋洋得意的). He and a couple of students had played one last trick before they graduated: The night before, they’d slipped into the principal’s (校长) home and used rolls of toilet paper to decorate his house and yard. I eyed the principal on the stage. He gave no indication that anything was wrong. We moved slowly up in line. My friend walked across the stage and received his diploma. Then my name was called. I took a deep breath, nervously climbed the steps, crossed the stage under the hot lights and stopped in front of the principal. He gave me a big smile, shook my hand and handed me my diploma. I couldn’t wait to open the diploma case and find my name, certifying that I had graduated. However, when my friend opened his case, we all burst out laughing. Instead of a diploma, a single square of toilet paper was placed inside. Our high school principal had a great sense of humor and took this opportunity to play a trick back on the boys. I thought they were required to clean his house and yard, but they got off easily. They were allowed to graduate. Sometimes we get lucky when we do something wrong. However, sometimes we don’t. I often wonder how those who do wrong things get rid of troubles. We have decisions to make throughout our lives. The surest way to stay out of trouble is to avoid it in the first place. 28.What would the writer do after graduating from high school? A. Get married. B. Become a principal. C. Continue his study. D. Find a regular job. 29.Why did the writer’s friend seem pleased before receiving his diploma? A. Nobody had discovered his criminal behavior. B. He was about to graduate from high school with great honors. C. He had been praised by the principal for his achievements. D. He had succeeded in teasing the principal. 30.How did the author’s friend feel the instant he opened his diploma case? A. Astonished B. Embarrassed. C. Touched. D. Calm. 31.What would be the best title for the passage? A. Keeping away from Wrong Choices B. Cherishing Every Opportunity in Life C. Avoiding Making One Mistake Twice D. Learning Valuable Lessons from Failure D Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers’ market. Nine people were killed. More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. Apparently, he was just old and confused. This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts, or worse. In our teenage years, we all heard “driving is not a right; it’s a privilege (特权).” That is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia ( 痴呆) are very serious concerns. Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults’ driving ability. By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old, his or her driving privilege should be examined. Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety. Another option (选项) is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours. Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there are laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn’t some prescription (处方) drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily. The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all. Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it’s dangerous for the rest of us. 32.The first paragraph is written in order to show________. A. the harm of driving at an old age B. the importance of traffic safety C. traffic accidents are on the rise D. many elderly drivers are careless 33.The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving _______. A. over eighty-five B. between sunset and dawn C. with the help of voice warning systems D. under the influence of prescription drugs 34.The underlined word “unsettling” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “_______”. A. disappointing B. worrying C. touching D. interesting 35.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. How to keep old people safe on the road? B. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws? C. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers? D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person? 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 Years ago, I found a teenager had some problems in her life, she might go home and write in her diary. Now, a teenager with the same problems might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog. In many ways, a diary and a blog are very similar. 36 The biggest difference is that blogging is much more public than a diary. Usually, a teenager treats her diary like a book full of secrets that she does not want to share. It's interesting that someone who writes in a blog instead of a diary will probably write nearly the same information. I have a little sister, and sometimes I go online to read her blog. She writes about things like waking up early for swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry test. 37 Then, after I had finished writing, I would hide my diary in a secret place because I was worried that my sister might read it! 38 If I was angry with a friend during high school and wrote something mean about her in my diary, she would never know. However, if my sister ever wrote something bad about a friend, that friend might read her blog and get angry. 39 If I was feeling sad one day and wrote in my diary, "Nobody cares about me, "no one would know about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friends would quickly respond and tell her how much they like her. 40 . A. There are also advantages to blogging, of course. B. The biggest trouble with blogging is what someone said may mislead teenagers. C. So, what makes blogging different from writing in a traditional diary? D. Blogs help people stay in contact with their friends and to hear what the people around them are doing. E. Blogs can serve as a platform where people can voice different opinions about some social issues. F. When I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but only in my diary. G. The biggest problem with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. In the week before Christmas, one Delta airlines pilot gave a sad Arizona family a gift that no one else could. And when the news came that Yu passed away on Dec 14, 2017, this metaphor(比喻) was quoted and rewritten by his fans 62 (express) their nostalgia for this great writer: “Now it’s us on the outside, and you on the inside.” 63 (bear) in 1928 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, Yu spent his younger days on the Chinese mainland before moving to Taiwan in his 64 (twenty). Nostalgia- which Yu wrote in his 40s to voice his homesickness for his childhood motherland--became his most well-known work, since it resonated (引起共鸣) with many who were far away from home. The poem appeared in Chinese school textbooks and 65 (adapt) into songs. 66 , the fact that Nostalgia became so famous also disturbed Yu because among the over 1000 poems that he 67 (write), Nostalgia seemed to be the only one that the public ever talked about and appreciated. “I’d like to think of Nostalgia 68 my business card, but unfortunately it got so big that it kept people from seeing the real me,” Yu once said, according to China Youth Daily. Indeed, writing poems is only one of Yu’s many talents. Great Chinese Liang Shiqiu once said of Yu, “He writes poems with his right hand and proses (散文) with his left hand. There is hardly anyone who matches his achievements at the time.” Yu was also a 69 (translate). According to CGTN, Yu spoke French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian, and published 13 translation collections. It is natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful. However, in my opinion, health is more important than beauty. For a student, study is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others’ opinions affect your normal life. If you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise and changing unhealthy eating habits. What matters most is that you should keep a healthy state of mind, as it will not only help with your study but also help you get over difficulties in dieting. I hope my advice will be of some help to you and I’m looking forward to your next letter. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【听力录音稿】 Text 1 M: Nice day. I don’t think I have to wear the thick coat. W: No, it would be rainy late this afternoon and tomorrow it might even be snowy! Text 2 M: Some of our friends are going to watch a movie tonight. Would you like to come? W: Enjoyment before the exam? You must be mad! Text 3 W: What did you do in the summer holidays, Henry? M: Oxford has millions of tourists in the summer, so it was easy for me to find a job there. Text 4 W: Your garden looks great. You must have spent much time here. M: Not really. The weather has been good this year. Text 5 W: Here you are, sir. M: Oh, I think you’ve made a mistake. What I ordered is a cup of coffee, not juice. W: Sorry, sir. Please have this glass of water and wait for a moment. I’ll get your drink soon. Text 6 M: I can’t wait for my birthday party this Saturday evening. I hope it will be better this year. I’m hoping for something surprising and a lot of gifts. W: It will be. There will be a lot of people at your party.[] M: I know my friends are preparing to give me a big surprise these days. W: How do you know? M: I saw Tom wrapping a big box with Alice, Bob and Danny! Text 7 W: Come on, Dad! The shops will be closed if we don’t hurry. M: Don’t worry. The shops are open until midnight on Christmas Eve. W: Yes, but it will take us a long time to find a car park. And it will be midnight before we choose a present for mother! Plus we don’t know what to buy for her, maybe a hat. M: No, she has already had so many hats. W: Well, maybe a box of chocolates. M: But she never eats them. Anything else is OK. You know she will be satisfied with what you buy for her. Text 8 M: Hi, Megan. How are you? Have you seen the doctor? W: No, it’s not about me. It’s about Bonzo. M: What happened? W: I was playing football with Bonzo in the garden, and the ball went over the garden into the road. When Bonzo was running after it, he got hit by a car. M: Oh, no! Didn’t the driver see Bonzo? W: Not really. Bonzo was running too fast. We took him to the pet hospital immediately, but there was nothing they could do. M: Oh, poor dog. I know how much he meant to you. W: I have had him since he was two months old. He was like one of my family. M: I know you are very sad but you can’t be alone like this any more. Let’s go out and do some shopping which is your favorite. W: I would like to have a cup of coffee to calm down. M: Fine. Let’s go. Text 9 W: How do you know how old a star is? M: For most stars, we find its age from how big it is. We can know its size from the amount of light it puts out, and its color. Then the size tells us how long a star will live. Big stars live a short life while small stars live much longer. W: I’ve always wondered if there is an end in space. Do you think scientists have found the answer? M: This is a difficult question. The truth is that we have no idea! We currently don’t have a way of testing it. But some scientists will come up with a way in the future. I have faith in it. W: The last question is from our readers: do you believe there’s other life in different parts of the universe? M: There are so many planets in the universe. Life may exist on other planets. But will we ever find or research them? I think that’s very unlikely. Text 10 W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to World Music. Today we’ll have a look at Westlife. I believe many of you are quite familiar with them. Westlife was an Irish boy band who formed in 1998 and broke up in 2012. Westlife sold over 50 million records worldwide. In addition, the group had 14 number-one singles in the United Kingdom, the third-highest in UK history. They achieved a total of 26 top ten singles over their 14-year career. In April 1999, the group had their first single, Swear It Again, which immediately topped the lists in Ireland and in the UK for two weeks, which earned them great fame overnight. Their second single, If I Let You Go, which appeared in August 1999 along with Flying Without Wings in October the same year, also topped the lists in the UK. By 2010, Westlife was listed as the UK’s top-selling album group of the 21st century. Although they gained great success in Europe and Asia, Westlife never managed to break into the US market, achieving only one hit single in 2000: Swear It Again.
