One such dance is waltz(华尔兹). There is a basic form for waltz, which you can see in this drawing of a dancing couple. The man places one arm around the woman’s waist and she places her opposite hand on his shoulder. Then, they stretch their other arms out from their bodies and clasp hands. If someone tries to teach you a formal kind of dancing, chances are that your teacher will start with the waltz. Have you ever tried to dance like this? There are lots of different kinds of waltz, all performed to different types of waltz music. The music might be fast or slow but what they all have is a regular one-two-three, one-two-three rhythm. The traditional form is the old-school waltz in which dancers turn all the time with a hopping(跳跃), springy step. This waltz has a slow, smooth, gliding step. There’s also the Mexican waltz, which moves much faster. Listen to this Mexican waltz music and you can imagine how fast the dancers have to move. Formal dancing has even become a profession, with people entering competitions. Have you ever seen a formal dance competition? Today, ballroom dancing is almost considered a competitive sport; professionals perform different dances, each with strict rules. Everything from where the dancers place their hands to how they move is judged. In the glide waltz, dancers are judged by how smoothly they move. “I can dance with a glass of water on my head,” is a well known sentence used by skilled dancers in the old days. In the past, some people learned how to dance by reading books, while others studied with a teacher called the “dancing master.” How do people learn to dance today? 31. When a couple are dancing, _______. A. the girl places one arm around the man’s waist B. the man puts one hand on the girl’s shoulder C. they stand face to face with one of their hands held together D. the man puts one arm around the girl’s waist and the other on her shoulder 32. Why do the dancers move fast in the Mexican waltz? A. To keep up with the music. B. To show how well they perform. C. To catch up with the other dancers. D. to show the difference of the dance. 33. What do the different types of waltz have in common? A. They use the same kind of music. B. They share the same kind of steps. C. Their speeds are the same. D. They have the same kind of rhythm. 34. If one says “ I can dance with a glass of water on my head,” we know that _______. A. he is a good dancer B. he is a beginner C. he is practicing dancing D. he is tired of dancing 35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To tell us to learn waltz. B. To tell us how to dance. C. To tell us something about waltz. D. To tell us the development of waltz. B I was "between jobs" and making ends meet as a lunch waiter in a small high quality Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village. I enjoyed the customers and didn't mind the work, but my ADD (注意力缺失症)kept me from coordinating(协调)all the details a good waiter needs to coordinate. I was doing my best to get a few kind tips before they ended my employment, but on my final shift(轮班) something interesting happened. I was serving an African American couple, a man and a lady who seemed to be on a "first date”. When it came time to order, the man made certain that the lady’s order was exactly what she wanted. Then for himself he ordered a glass of water and some bread. The bread was free. That was all right with me. I had to be sympathized with his situation. But when I saw him counting coins on the table I began to get a little worried. He was counting out the exact change for the lunch and it wasn't likely to include a tip. As his "date" stood to go to the restroom, I walked up to the table to collect the coins. This man saw the look on my face and asked, “What's the problem? All the money is there. ” “It's usual to include a tip,” I said as I counted the coins into my hand. Without blinking, he replied, “I have a tip for you—shake my hand.” A bit disappointed, I grabbed his hand for a quick shake. To my surprise, he pulled his hand away and said, “That’s not a handshake.” “Now this is a handshake,” He said as his hand reached for mine: “You see, the webs(虎口) of our thumbs meet, that's how we know we're touching one another...then we look right into each other’s eyes and allow our hands to embrace...not too hard to prove we're men, just like this, you see?" A slight smile had come over his face as he noticed; I had gotten the connection! This was the best tip I ever got as a waiter and one of the best in my life. 36. While working in the Italian restaurant, the author ______. A. wanted to learn from real life B. was often criticized by his boss C. was struggling in life D. didn’t get along well with customers 37. What can we know about the author from the passage? A. He was not a good waiter. B. He became the couple’s friend. C. He tried his best to become a good writer. D. He was disappointed with the man’s ordering free bread. 38. According to the second paragraph we can infer that ______. A. the African American couple were rather rich B. the African American man was probably poor C. the African American man was not hungry at all D. the food in the restaurant was rather expensive 39. Why did the author feel worried? A. The man only ordered a little food. B. The man didn’t intend to give him tips. C. The man was not satisfied with his service. D. The man gave him too many coins. 40. At the end of the story, the author ______. A. learned how to shake hands B. got the tip he had expected C. appreciated the handshake D. was fired by the restaurant owner C Visitor Code of Conduct Please help us maintain a healing environment for our patient. D We may all have had the embarrassing moment: Getting halfway through a story only to realize that we've told this exact tale before. Why do we make such memory mistakes? According to a research published in Psychological Science, it may have to do with the way our brains process different types of memory. Researchers Nigel Gopie and Colin Macleod divided memory into two kinds. The first was source memory, or the ability to keep track of where information is coming from. The second was destination memory, or the ability to recall who we have given information to. They found that source memory functions better than destination memory, in part because of the direction in which that information is travelling. To study the differences between source and destination memory, the researchers did an experiment on 60 university students. The students were asked to associate 50 random facts with the faces of 50 famous people. Half of the students “told” each fact to one of the faces, reading it aloud when the celebrity's picture appeared on a computer screen. The other half read each fact silently and saw a different celebrity picture afterward. When later asked to recall which facts went with which faces, the students who were giving information out (destination memory) scored about 16 percent lower on memory performance compared with the students receiving information(source memory). The researchers concluded that outgoing information was less associated with its environmental context (背景)-that is, the person-than incoming information. This makes sense given what is known about attention. A person who is giving information, even little facts, will devote some mental resources to thinking about what is being said. Because our attention is limited, we give less attention to the person we are giving information to. After a second experiment with another group of 40 students, the researchers concluded that selffocus is another factor that undermines destination memory. They asked half the students to continue giving out random information, while the other told things about themselves. This time around, those who were talking about themselves did 15 percent worse than those giving random information. “When you start telling these personal facts compared with nonself facts, suddenly destination memory goes down more, suggesting that it is the selffocus that's reducing the memory .”Gopie told Live Science. 46. The purpose of this article is to ________. A. give advice on how to improve memory B. say what causes the memory to worsen C. explain why we repeat stories to thesame person D. introduce different kinds of memories 47. Those who read each fact silently and saw a different celebrity picture afterward ______. A. can memorize more information B. have worse memory C. are more likely to repeat stories D. paid more attention to themselves 48. The person who is giving information ________. A. may receive little facts B. focuses more on what he is saying C. has limited attention D. pays much attention to his own behavior 49. The underlined word “undermines” probably means ________. A. weakens B. benefits C. explains D. supports 50. What did the scientists conclude from the second experiment? A. Destination memory is weaker than source memory. B. Focusing attention on oneself leads to relatively poor source memory performance. C. Associating personal experience with information helps people memorize better. D. Selffocus is responsible for giving information twice or more to the same person. 第II卷(非选择题) 第三部分:写作 第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)(学法题) When my friends went to college in great delight, I restarted my senior high school life. My spirit sank. Surrounded by strange classmates, I felt like I was in a maze and was sorry about myself. There were some complex feelings in my minds. I was frightened, nervous and lonely. To make matters worse, I recalled my failure again and again, which put more pressure on me than I could bear. As a result, I was always feeling down during class time. My teacher found me spiritless. One day he asked me to come to his office and told me about his attitude towards life: we might suffer from mistakes, but it’s important to learn lessons from them. All the pains and the embarrassing things we experience are part of the process. So keep up your spirit! At last, he added, “If you are optimistic, things you want may happen to you!” Warmth rushed through my soul. I suddenly found the sun shining again when I stepped out of his office. With the teacher’s help, I eventually got over my depression. From then on, I no longer bowed my head and began smiling to my classmates. I would put up my hand confidently in class and play with my new friends in my spare time. Meanwhile, I was gradually embraced by my classmates. Now faced with fierce competition, we all study hard because we know that every second counts. Moreover, there is an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect between us. I love my class; I love my classmates! To be frank, I still have a thirst for my dream university, but I’m not afraid of failure because I can profit by it.
