She lives on the other side of the world, and I went to visit her, not wanting to leave and feeling like I was leaving home against my will. However, I wanted to show her my support because she is my only sister. So I boarded the plane in mid-August, and hated the long flight. I arrived, tired and hungry. I had left my husband of 2 years, alone, in our old New Orleans house. I was all set and ready to perform for my sister for the music festival on Sunday morning when I received a call from Chicago. The hurricane was predicted to hit our city, and many people had already evacuated, but my husband chose to stay behind. He could not get a call to me on the other side of the world, but he could call his cousin in Chicago. He gave his cousin a message for me, that he would be just fine, and not to worry. As the day wore on, I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN, that New Orleans was under water. I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded. I left the stage and went straight to the TV. I saw the street sign near my home, of Humanity Street, but nothing below it, except water. In the days that followed, I found out that my house, my car, my clothes, my furniture, everything that I’d left behind was gone…but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保险杠)of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack, in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans, half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived. By the first week of September, I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband. Since then, our relationship has grown deeper; we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational, spirit-filled community. 25. Why did the author leave home? A. To look after her sister. B. To attend a music festival. C. To watch a performance. D. To visit her husband’s cousin. 26. How did the author feel when she left home? A. Disappointed. B. Worried. C. Tired. D. Unwilling. 27. What does the underlined word “evacuated” mean? A. Gathered. B. Struggled. C. Escaped. D. Hid. 28. What might be the title for the passage? A. Lost it All, Gained Even More. B. Once Gone, Never Returned. C. Caught in the Hurricane. D. Trapped in a Dilemma. C Internet dating has become one of the biggest and most successful business ventures on the Internet. Basically, Internet dating is a way to meet people for either friendship or dating without actually having to meet them in person first. The first thing to do if you decide to try Internet dating is to build your profile(简介) which can include your hobbies, hopes for the future, and so on. A photograph is optional, but many sites claim that a photograph increases the number of people who look at your profile. Many Internet dating sites will charge a one-time registration fee to use their services. Internet dating makes it possible to meet people from all over the world. You can even narrow the search down to your area by zip code. Another advantage is that you can communicate by email before you meet in person. Thousands of people have met, fallen in love, and married through Internet dating. It is an excellent way for shy people to meet. It is also a way for people with busy lives to connect with others, and an easy way to meet people who share your interests. Just as in conventional dating and love, there are some pitfalls to be aware of in Internet dating. The person you have been talking to on the net may not be who they say they are. Be very aware that there are some people who misrepresent their appearance or private details, such as marital status, income, and so on, for their own reasons. It would not be the first time that someone has been taken in, and talk shows are full of cheating partners who have been caught dating over the Internet in their spare time. Nevertheless, taking a few simple precautions should help ensure that your Internet dating experience is fun. 29. Which of the following is a must to make an Internet dating possible? A. A photo. B. A profile. C. Registration fee. D. Business experience. 30. One advantage of Internet dating is that _______. A. you can avoid a face-to-face meeting in the beginning B. you're sure to find a partner with the same interests C. you'll find absolutely reliable information of others D. you'll gain fame and money overnight 31. The underlined word "pitfalls" in Paragraph 4 most probably means________. A. rules B. trends C. problems D. skills 32. What is probably talked about following the last paragraph? A. Conventional dating. B. Hidden advantages. C. Safety measures. D. Romantic love. D Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others, it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(独白)as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleiman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(打破)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours. 33. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably____________. A. he is a lazy person B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle C. he is not sure when his energy is low D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening 34. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will____________. A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work B. help you to control your temper early in the day C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work D. keep your energy cycle under control all day 35. What should one do if he wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning A. He should change his energy cycle. B. He should overcome his laziness. C. He should get up earlier than usual. D. He should go to bed earlier. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。 注意:此七选五题按要求涂在卡上。 Everyone sleeps. However, taking the time to develop a sleep habit is probably the last thing on your mind and some sleep advice simply can’t be forgotten. 36 . Watching TV until you fall asleep It has nothing to do with what you watch —TV news isn’t a better pre-sleep choice than TV series. 37 . The bright light keeps you awake all the night. So even if you nod off (in front of the TV, for example), you probably won’t stay asleep for long. Sleeping with pets 38 . They get comfortable, and then they move. This goes on all night, and whether you admit it or not, it interrupts your ability to get the level of sleep needed to feel rested. Eating fatty, heavy foods too close to bedtime Heartburn (烧心,胃痛) strikes anyone of any age, but it’s the most common GI disorder (胃肠失调) in older adults. If you’ve ever tried to go to sleep after eating a fatty meal, you’ve probably found the discomfort of stomach preventing you from falling asleep or staying asleep. 39 Remember how poorly you sleep when you have a fever—turning over and over again, never really feeling rested? Well, heavy exercise too close to bedtime has the same effect—it raises your body temperature so that your sleep is disturbed until your body temperature drops to normal, which may take several hours. Accepting snoring (打呼噜) as normal sleep behavior Snoring may seem as common as breathing, but it’s considered the biggest sleep killer, and it’s linked to several causes: sleeping on your back, being overweight, having a cold, drinking, or taking drugs. 40 . For the snorer, it disturbs sleep by awakening him/her every so often in order to breathe normally. For the partner, the noise can be unbearable. A. Exercising heavily too close to bedtime B. Here are some suggestions you’ll need to follow C. Reducing your body temperature before bedtime D. Rather it’s the TV’s bright light that is the criminal E. Here are some bad habits you need to get rid of F. Most seriously, it’s caused by a dangerous illness G.
