She loved driving and spent the war years as an ambulance (救护车) driver for Bangour Hospital. Aged 100 she was still driving around Edinburgh, up to Perthshire and elsewhere — the oldest among all the drivers in Scotland. But she had her first ever accident several days after her 100th birthday — she hit a traffic island (a raised area in the middle of a road where people can wait until it is safe to cross) when she took her new car for a drive in Edinburgh. Lady Morton, who celebrated her 100th birthday in July, was given a car as a surprise present. She talked about the accident which happened that night. “I wasn’t going fast, but I hit a traffic island. I couldn’t see it, because it had no lights, which I think is unbelievable and unreasonable. But I am all right and luckily my car wasn’t badly damaged .” Although Lady Morton had the accident, she didn’t plan to stop driving. “Some people are just born to drive, and I think I am one of them. I’ve been a good driver since the first time I got in a car,” she said. “I’m musical, so I listen to the sound of the car to know when to change gear (档位).” Lady Morton bought her first car in 1927. The main change she had noticed since then is the traffic. “It’s appalling. However, I don’t mind it, because I am experienced, but I feel very sorry for beginners,” she said. 24. What was special about Lady Morton? A. She was 100 years old. B. She had the fewest traffic accidents. C. She was the oldest driver in Scotland. D. She had the most years of driving experience. 25. How did Lady Morton’s first accident happen? A. She had poor eyesight. B. She was driving too fast. C. The traffic island was dark. D. The lights of her car weren’t on. 26. She drove better than any other driver. 27. What does the underlined word “appalling” in the last paragraph mean? A. Very good. B. Fantastic. C. Not bad. D. Terrible. C In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister was very ill. He had been wounded by a sick dog that had rabies, a very dangerous disease. His parents were told that there was probably only one man who could save Joseph's life — Louis Pasteur. When Pasteur was a young boy in France, he spent many hours every day with the chemist (药剂师) who lived in his small town. At that time, the chemist had to make all the medicines himself. Young Louis enjoyed watching the chemist as he worked and helped those people who came to him each day. As a schoolboy, Pasteur worked slowly and carefully. At first, his teachers thought that young Louis might be a slow learner. Through elementary school, high school, and college, Pasteur worked in the same thoughtful way. Then he became a college professor (教授) and a scientist, and he continued to work very carefully. Pasteur was studying about the germs (细菌) that cause rabies when Joseph Meister became ill. In fact, Pasteur believed he had a medical treatment for rabies, but he had never given it to a person before. At first, Pasteur was afraid to treat Joseph, but the poor child was dying. Pasteur gave Joseph an inoculation (预防接种) every day for ten days. Slowly, the child became better. During his lifetime, Pasteur studied germs and learned how they cause diseases in animals and people. He developed vaccinations (疫苗) that prevent many of these diseases. On September 28, 1895, Louis Pasteur passed away, at the age of 72. The work of this great man has been of great help to modern medicine. 28. The story of Joseph Meister is given to _____. A. express the author's sadness. B. introduce the subject of the text C. show some common diseases in 1885. D. warn children to stay away from dogs 29. According to the text, young Louis _____. A. was once badly hurt by a dog. B. was very interested in medicine C. made a living by working for a chemist. D. had been thought highly of by his teachers 30. We can learn from Paragraph 3 that Louis Pasteur _____. A. was always patient. B. was clever but proud. C. was a slow learner. D. was a humorous professor. 31. What would be the best title for the text ? A. Germs and diseases. B. Rabies: a terrible disease. C. The earliest chemist in France. D. Louis Pasteur: a great scientist. D It's true that many dads in the wild aren't interested in parenting, but there are some that work pretty hard to give their little ones a good start. Maybe one of these dads will make you remember your own dad! The male giant water bug (雄性负子蝽) doesn't seem to mind a heavy load (负荷物) on his back for his kids. The female puts about 100 to 150 eggs on the back of the male, and then she leaves. Once the female is gone, the male has to look after the eggs. It usually takes one to two weeks for the eggs to hatch (孵化). The father giant water bug jumps around to make sure the growing eggs get enough air and water. All this time he can't fly because of the weight of the eggs growing rapidly on his back. Now let's turn to the male stickleback fish. When the mother leaves after laying her eggs, the father tends his young. If the young fish go too far away, their father helps with their safe return by carrying them back in his mouth. The male stickleback looks after all his young — as many as 100 — until they can live on their own. A similar example can be found in emperor penguins (帝企鹅) living in cold areas. The male emperor penguin goes without food while looking after his egg until it hatches. For about 62 to 67 days, the egg stays on top of the father's feet, in very cold temperatures that drop down to -39°C. As a result, the father may lose nearly 50 percent of his body weight while waiting for his baby penguin to be born! 32. What do we know about the giant water bug? A. It is unable to fly. B. The eggs grow on the father's back. C. The male must keep still to hatch the eggs. D. The female looks after her eggs together with the male. 33. What does the underlined word “tends” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Waits for. B. Forgets about. C. Takes care of. D. Loses control of. 34. During the hatching period, the male emperor _____. A. is unable to eat B. is fed by the female C. tries to lose some weight D. can't stand the cold weather 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Mr. Moms in the Wild B. Animals Do Have Feelings C. Nature Loves Us like Our Dad D. Childbirth in the Animal Kingdom 第二节:七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Be at your best! What does your brain need to work well?
