Why don’t you fly and meet me?”‎ My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thought, his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.‎ My father sees me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.‎ He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.‎ ‎“What is our first stop?” asks my father.‎ ‎“What time is it?”‎ ‎“Still don’t have a watch?”‎ Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of little boy.‎ ‎“Unbelievable,” he says, “How was this done?”‎ A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture and then left the final touches to his son.‎ We stare up and I ask myself, would I ever devote my life to anything?‎ No directions, no goals. I always used to hear those words in my father’s voice. Now I hear them in my own.‎ The next day we’re at Yellowstone‎ ‎National Park, where we have a picnic.‎ ‎“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I ask.‎ ‎“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other—but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”‎ The last sentence—it’s probably the same thing I’d say about my father. And what I’d want my child to say about me.‎ In Glacier‎ ‎National Park, my father says, “I’ve never seen water so blue.” I have, in several places of the world, I can keep traveling, I realize—and maybe a regular job won’t be as dull as I feared.‎ Weeks after our trip, I call my father.‎ ‎“The photos from the trip are wonderful,” he says. “We have got to take another trip like that sometime.”‎ I tell him I’ve decided to settle down, and I’m wearing a watch.‎ ‎21. A Journey with Dad D. The Art of Travel B The days of staring attentively at the computer screen pretending to be interested in an assignment even though you are bored out of your mind may soon be coming to an end. That’s because if Dr. Harry Witchel has his way, computers of the future will be able to detect (察觉)boredom and even react to it real-time.‎ But before you get concerned, the machine is not reading your mind. It is just keeping track of the constant involuntary movements that people exhibit when in front of a computer or even a television. These are not the bigger instrumental actions like moving a mouse or using the remote, but subtle barely noticeable movements like scratching or stretching. Witchel says the level of movement is directly relative to how absorbed the person is in what he/she is reading or watching — the higher the interest level, the lesser the movement!‎ To test the theory Witchel and his team invited 27 people and exposed them to a variety of digital content for three minutes at a time. The activities ranged from playing online games to reading documents like the EU banking regulations that most people would find boring. A video motion tracker monitored their movements as they powered through each assignment. Just as the researchers had suspected, the involuntary actions decreased surprisingly, by as much as 42%, when the subjects were totally absorbed in what they were reading or seeing.‎ Fortunately, the scientists are not planning to use the findings that were published in the ‎ online Journal to create machines that report students who are not focusing at school. Instead, they believe that combining the motion detecting technology into future computers will help enhance (加强)the digital learning experience.‎ The scientists say that being able to measure the student’s interest level, will enable educators to adjust the materials real-time and re-engage the student. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions and in the future, also be used in developing more understanding companion robots.‎ ‎24. Dr. Harry Witchel wants future computers to have the competence to_______.‎ ‎ A. sense when users feel tired and less absorbed ‎ B. record how long people surf on the Internet ‎ C. help educators to prepare teaching materials ‎ D. read the people’s mind in front of a computer ‎25. What can we infer from the text?‎ ‎ A. The machine will be used to detect whether the students are focusing at school.‎ ‎ B. Subjects will make fewer unconscious movements if they are concentrated.‎ ‎ C. Future computers are intended to cure adolescents of their network addiction.‎ ‎ D. Most people think banking documents boring because they are of little value. ‎ ‎26. What may be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. Being Exposed to Computers All Day Long Makes You Bored.‎ ‎ B. Scientists are Developing a More Advanced Computer Now.‎ ‎ C. Computers of the Future May be Able to Detect Boredom.‎ ‎ D. The Future Machine is Helpful to Teachers And Students.‎ ‎ C Phrases like “good sharing!” and “great job on the slide!” echo across American playgrounds. Coaches pass out ribbons to every participant. Scholar publishes a series called “I’m Special!” assuring readers that the ability to play with friends and sing songs makes them special indeed. ‎ We’ve been told that high self-esteem is the key to children’s happiness and success, and we’ve been praising and protecting them ever since. But has the self-esteem movement gone too far? Many experts argue that instead of raising healthy high achievers, maybe we’re raising a ‎ generation of narcissists(自我陶醉者). “Our old concepts of self-esteem(自尊) are old-fashioned, and parents need to send the concept to the trash heap of all things outdated and useless,” says Aaron Cooper, co-author of I Just Want My Kids to be Happy.‎ While experts used to blame low self-esteem for everything from bad grades to criminal behavior, research has shown that inflated (膨胀的)self-esteem is more often the criminal. An article called “Rethinking Self-Esteem” by Roy made a stir when he supposed that criminals and drug abusers actually had higher self-esteem than the general population. Martin and Ervin found that the modern habit of constant praise was turning kids skeptical and unmotivated. And esteemed child development expert T. Barry recently wrote in The New York Times that the phrase “self-esteem” had lost its meaning. Parents just want their children to have a positive self-image. And while it’s easy to make fun of the extremes of the self-esteem movement, it’s difficult to walk the fine line between acquiring self-respect and self-centeredness. ‎ Anyway, make it clear that while you have expectations for their behavior, you love and accept them unconditionally. True self-esteem isn’t about a steady stream of applause; it develops when children know their limits and responsibilities, are given enough opportunities to challenge themselves, and feel secure that they’re loved even when they fail. ‎ ‎27. What’s the purpose of using phrases like “good sharing!” and “great job on the slide!”?‎ A. To attract readers’ attention. B. To introduce the topic.‎ C. To give the author’s opinion. D. To tell readers the key to happiness and success.‎ ‎28. According to the text, which of the following statements is true?‎ ‎ A. Children with high esteem are likely to be high achievers.‎ B. In children’s development high self-esteem plays a positive role. ‎ C. High self-esteem makes kids motivated nowadays.‎ ‎ D. High self-esteem does harm to kids in a way.‎ ‎29. The proper way to develop children’s true self-esteem is to_______.‎ A. give them constant praise unconditionally. B. let them shoulder all their responsibilities.‎ C. offer them support even though they fail. D. have high expectations for their behavior.‎ ‎30. What’s the author’s attitude towards high self-esteem?‎ A. Subjective. B. Positive. C. Objective. D.
