(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分) A Everyone knows that grains of sand can be grouped together to form a pagoda. In the same way, wealth starts with a goal saving a dollar at a time, which we call the piggy bank strategy. There are lessons in that time-honored coin-saving container. Any huge task seems easier when reduced to baby steps. If you wished to climb a 12,000-foot mountain, and could do it a day at a time, you would only have to climb 33 feet daily to reach the top in a year. If you want to take a really nice trip in 10 years for a special occasion, to collect the $15,000 cost, you have to save $3.93 a day. If you drop that into a piggy bank and then once a year put $1,434 in a savings account at 1% interest rate after-tax, you will have your trip money. When I was a child, my parents gave me a piggy bank to teach me that, if I wanted something, I should save money to buy it. We associate piggy banks with children, but in many countries, the little containers are also popular with adults. Europeans see a piggy bank as a sign of good fortune and wealth. Around the world, many believe a gift of a piggy bank on New Year’s Day brings good luck and financial success. Ah, but you have to put something in it. Why is a pig used as a symbol of saving? Why not an elephant bank, which is bigger and holds more coins? In the Middle Ages, before modern banking and credit instruments, people saved money at home, a few coins at a time dropped into a jar or dish. Potters made these inexpensive containers from an orange-colored clay called “pygg,” and folks saved coins in pygg jars. The Middle English word for pig was “pigge”. While the Saxons pronounced pygg, referring to the clay, as “pug”, eventually the two words changed into the same pronunciation, sounding the “i” as in pig or piggy. As the word became less associated with the orange clay and more with the animal, a clever potter fashioned a pygg jar in the shape of a pig, delighting children and adults. The piggy bank was born. Originally you had to break the bank to get to the money, bringing in a sense of seriousness into savings. While piggy banks teach children the wisdom of saving, adults often need to relearn childhood lessons. Think about the things in life that require large amounts of money--- college education, weddings, cars, medical care, starting a business, buying a home, and fun stuff like great trips. So when you have money, take off the top 10%, put it aside, save and invest wisely. 1. What is the piggy bank strategy? A. Setting a goal before making a travel plan. B. Putting aside a little money regularly for future use. C. Aiming high even when doing small things. D. Paying 1% income tax at a time. 2. The piggy bank originally was _________. A. a cheap clay container B. an animal-shaped dish C. a potter’s instrument D. a pig-like toy for children 3. The last paragraph talks about ________. A. the seriousness of educating children B. the enjoyment of taking a great trip C. the difficulty of starting a business D. the importance of managing money B Now people are walking less and less, and if they can figure out a way to avoid walking, they don’t want to walk any more. I felt superior about this matter until the other day I took my car to mail a small parcel. The journey is a matter of 281 steps. But I used the car. And I wasn’t in any hurry, either, I had merely become one more victim of a national sickness: motorists. It is an illness which I had thought I could not catch, for I was born in the tradition of going to places on my own two legs. At that time, we regarded 25 miles as good day’s walk and the ability to cover such a distance in ten hours as sign of strength and skill. It did not occur to us that walking was a hardship. And the effect was lasting. When I was 45 years old I raced –and beat—a teenage football player the 168 steps up the Stature of Liberty. Such enterprises today are regarded by many middle-aged persons as bad for the heart. But a well-known British physician, Sir Adolphe Abrahams, pointed out recently that hearts and bodies need proper exercise and that one is more likely to have illnesses than one who exercises regularly. And walking is an ideal form of exercise--- the most familiar and natural of all. It was Henry Thoreau who showed mankind the richness of going on foot. The man walking can learn the trees, flowers, insects, birds and animals, the significance of seasons, the very feel of himself as a living creature in a living world, which he cannot learn in a car. The car is a convenient means of transport, but we have made it our way of life. Many people don’t dare to approach nature any more; to them the world they were born to enjoy is all threat. To them security is a steel river thundering on a concrete road. And much of their thinking takes place while waiting for the traffic light to turn green. I say that the green of forests is the mind’s best light. And none but the man on foot can evaluate what is basic and everlasting. 4. What was life like when the author was young? A. people often walked 25 miles a day B. People usually went around on foot. C. People used to climb the Statue of Liberty. D. people considered a ten-hour walk as a hardship. 5. The author mentions Henry Thoreau to prove that __________ . A. people need regular exercise to keep fit B. middle-aged people like getting back to nature C. walking in nature helps enrich one’s mind D. going on foot prevents heart disease 6. What is the author’s intention of writing this passage? A. To encourage people to return to walking B. To tell people to reflect more on life. C. To advise people to do outdoor activities D. To recommend people to give up driving C In the world everyone wants to have a better life. They look forward to progress, whether in their personal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead a better way of doing things. All these, however, remains true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things. However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and ipads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off. With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item. Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old. It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created. 7. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to _______. A. change ways of living B. live a better life C. accept technology and advance steadily D. look for better methods 8. The underlined word “gadgets” is closest in meaning to _______. A. messages B. barriers C. tools D. skills 9. The author explains “efficiency comes with a price” by _______. A. using examples B. following time order C. making classification D. describing a process 10. What can be learned about technology from Paragraph 4? A. It can destroy old traditions. B. It can be used to preserve old products. C. It can lead to social progress. D. It can be used to correct mistakes.
