In the evening, Therese and Ola cooked us a tasty Swedish meal and we sat around chatting for hours. August 10, Tuesday We had to leave the house at 9: 00 am. We caught the train to the ferry station to go to the city, where we ate fast food in order to get some work done. We explored Goteborg a bit more. The evening was full of South and Central American food—pepper, Roasted Garlic, Argentinian wine and mustard. August 11, Wednesday As always, it was a rush to get out of the house in time, and in our haste we left our beloved coffee machine behind. We caught the train to Stockholm. We stayed with Niklas, who we met in Lithuania in 2007. We went for a walk in the forest after dinner. August l2, Thursday Niklas doesn’t have the Internet at home and we couldn’t really work there, so instead we headed into his office for the morning. We worked hard until lunch and then went to see Stockholm. We met Ulrike, a friend of Niklas’. In the evening, we went for another walk in the forest—it’s so good to be hiking again! B Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinesestyle spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries. Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet(字母). The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them. But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write. In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully trying to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper."If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?"we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin."The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,"she reasons."Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up."says the teacher. 24. Which of the following is closest in meaning with the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2? A. Every Chinese can write Chinese characters easily, especially with computers. B. Only with the help of computers can some Chinese people write Chinese characters. C. Despite the help of computers, Chinese people have forgotten how to write. D. Computers are the only means to rely on to write Chinese characters for many people. 25. What can we learn about the Character Hero? A. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks. B. It’s the most viewed TV programs in China. C. It means to spread Chinese culture to the world. D. It draws great public attention across the country. 26. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters? A. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often. B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy. C. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters. D. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology. 27. According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is ____________. A. necessary for adults to survive in China B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry C. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive D. an ability to be developed only when you are students C As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now! With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you. Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. Your family have been with you since you came into this world. It is also perfectly natural in this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens. This period is part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey and there will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again. You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely! 28. The best title for this passage would be_____. A. The Choices in Life B. The Key to Success C. Say Goodbye to the Past D. Becoming a Young Adult 29. Who do the underlined words “some people” (Para4 )probably mean? A. your parents B. your classmates C. true friends D. your relatives 30. As far as the author is concerned, teenage years are_____. A. a period of complete freedom B. too hard for young people to get through C. an important time for the young to make the right choices D. a very important period for young students to leave their parents 31. Who is the passage mainly intended for? A. Young parents B. Teachers. C. Teenagers. D. Adults. D Electric Cars Where do cars get their energy from? For most cars, the answer is petrol. But some cars use electricity. These cars have special motors that get their power from large batteries. Most people tend to think of electric cars as a new invention, but they have been around for a long time. They were popular when the technology for petrol engines was not very advanced. Recently, electric cars have again become popular because people want cars that pollute less. Electric cars are better than petrol cars in several ways. The biggest benefit is reduced pollution. In areas where there is a high percentage of electric cars, there is less pollution. But it is important to understand that electric cars still cause pollution. Remember that the electricity to power electric cars has to come from somewhere, which is most likely a power station. Unless these power stations run on solar or wind energy, they are most likely burning coal and oil to make electricity. The second benefit of electric cars is a reduction in the dependence on foreign oil. There are several countries, including the United States, which don't want to rely on oil coming from other countries to power their transportation systems. They want the power to come from within their country, and since electric cars can run on electricity from coal or nuclear power stations, there is less of a need to import oil. Despite the benefits of electric cars, there are some problems with them as well. One disadvantage is that electric cars are more expensive than petrol cars. This is mostly due to the high cost of the batteries these cars need. Electric cars run on batteries, just like a mobile phone does. But unlike a mobile phone, you cannot charge your electric car's battery by plugging it into a wall. They need to be charged in special places. Now, there is a lack of places where people can charge the batteries. Another problem is that electric cars cannot travel as far as petrol cars. Some people are afraid that the battery will run out of electricity (and the car will stop) before they reach their destination. Despite these problems, many people, including automobile industry experts, believe that the percentage of electric cars will increase in the future. 32. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. Electric cars make some countries independent. B. Electric cars cause no pollution to the environment. C. Electric cars have some advantages over petrol cars. D. Electric cars need electricity from solar or wind energy. 33. Which of the following is not mentioned as the shortcomings of electric cars? A. Petrol cars are cheaper than electric cars. B. Electric cars need special motors to get power. C. Petrol cars can travel farther than electric cars. D. Electric cars need special places to get charged. 34. We can infer from the passage that _______. A. electric cars will take the place of petrol cars B. no one holds hope for electric cars at present C. electric cars waste more energy than before D. more and more people will use electric cars 35. The main purpose of the passage is to _______. A. argue and prove B. attract and discuss C. inform and explain D. advertise and conclude 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Since the day of its birth, the United Nations has been the subject of much debate. 36 Others think that it is too weak. We can better understand this debate if we learn more about the U.N. and its history. The U.N. was started for two reasons. First, when the idea was born, people all over the world were tired of war. They felt that there must be peaceful answers to the world’s problems. 37 The second reason was that modern science had developed new bombs and airplanes. 38 National borders were beginning to lose their meaning. Science would develop even more dangerous weapons in the future. Only an international organization would be able to control modern science. Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President at the time, believed that the Allies (联盟) should plan for peace before the war ended. On December 1, 1943, Roosevelt, Britain’s Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin from Soviet Union agreed to start an organization for world peace. 39 During the next year and a half, the idea of such an organization was debated around the world. Then came the big day. On April 11, 1945, the first international meeting of the United Nations took place in San Francisco. The goal of the meeting was to write the U.N. Charter (宪章). All of the fifty-one nations at the meeting had their own ideas to offer for the Charter. 40 Every nation present voted for the Charter. No one voted against it. A. After a long debate, a final Charter was agreed upon. B. The U.N. Charter is a beautiful piece of writing. C. They asked all countries, large and small, to join the organization. D. Even the smallest country on earth can have its voice heard. E. They also felt that only an international organization could keep world peace. F. These weapons made it almost impossible for a country to defend itself. G.
