Peter practiced every day, even if he could manage only fifteen minutes between medical treatments. As he mastered each piece, he posted his performances on Facebook. He finished on November 12th, then turned to the even more difficult Paganini caprices (随想曲), which he had often listened to in a recording by Itzhak Perlman. “It’s something I always wanted to play when I grew up, like wanting to be a great baseball player,” he said.‎ ‎21. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs.‎ The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan (曼哈顿). Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information about the feasibility of a manned flying saucer (飞碟) landing on Earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology. ‎ ‎“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week's satellite landing,” Professor Zog said, “that there is no life on Earth." ‎ ‎“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening News asked. ‎ ‎"For one thing, Earth's surface in the area of Manhattan consists of solid concrete (混泥土) and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”‎ ‎“Are there any other sources of danger that you have discovered in your studies?”‎ ‎“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud staying over the surface of Earth? We don't know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there. Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicates it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink.”‎ ‎“Sir, what are all those tiny black spots on the photographs?”‎ ‎“We’re not certain. They seem to be metal objects that moves along certain roads. They give out gases, make noise and keep crashing into each other.”‎ ‎“Professor Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of Zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?”‎ ‎“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in the Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.”‎ ‎25. Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale. And the industry isn’t stopping there.‎ Food production With a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated (复杂的) chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that—it takes years of ‎ experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Foodini to “re-create forms and pieces” of food that are “exactly the same,” freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table.‎ Nutrition Future 3D food printers could make processed food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, said, “Food printing could allow consumers to print food to meet their own nutritional needs, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you’d eat something baked just for you on demand.”‎ Challenges Despite recent advancements in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Currently, most ingredients must be changed to a paste (糊状物) before a printer can use them, and the printing process is quite time-consuming, because ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways. On top of that, most of the 3D food printers now are restricted to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts are skeptical about 3D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.‎ ‎28. What benefit does 3D printing bring to food production?‎ A. It helps cooks to create new dishes.‎ B. It makes the dishes more delicious.‎ C. It saves time and effort in cooking.‎ D. It contributes to restaurant decorations.‎ ‎29. According to Paragraph 3, 3D-printed food____________.‎ A. is more available to customers.‎ B. can keep all the nutrition in raw materials.‎ C. is more tasty than food in supermarkets.‎ D. can meet individual nutritional needs.‎ ‎30. What could be the best title of the passage?‎ A. 3D Food Printing: From Farm to Table B. 3D Food Printing: Delicious New Technology C. The Challenges for 3D Food Production D. A New Way to Improve 3D Food Printing 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Research suggests that at least 64% of people now spend up to four hours daily of spare time in front of a screen. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide. ‎ My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea. ‎ I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings. ‎ The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The ‎ experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day. ‎ I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out. ‎ Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. Thinking that he could die in a matter of minutes, I stopped my car and carefully examined the boy. He promised to return my $50 last month, but he only gave me $15 last week.‎ Text 3 ‎ W: Can I help you?‎ M: Yes, I bought this book here yesterday. But when I took it to school, I noticed this page was missing.‎ Text 4‎ W: Can you take a look at my math homework?‎ M: I’m writing a report at the moment. Mom should be home in a few minutes. ‎ Text 5 ‎ W: Did you hear? The Warriors won the NBA championship!‎ M: Who? I don’t really follow sports. Is that a good thing?‎ W: Yeah! They’re from Oakland, which is where I live, so I’m super excited!‎ Text 6 ‎ W: Cambridge Theatre Box Office.‎ M: Have you got any tickets left for Romeo and Juliet for this Saturday?‎ W: Which performance? 5:00 p.m. or 8:30 p.m.?‎ M: 8:30 p.m., please.‎ W: We have tickets at 5 pounds, 6 pounds, and 8 pounds.‎ M: I’d like to reserve two seats at 6 pounds each, please.‎ W: All right. That’s two tickets at 6 pounds. Saturday, 8:30 p.m. performance. What’s your name?‎ M: Bishop. Henry Bishop.‎ W: Thank you. You’ll be able to collect the tickets before 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, right?‎ M: Yes, of course. Thank you. Bye.‎ Text 7 ‎ M: Reception. Can I help you? ‎ W: Yes, please. This is Mrs. Browning calling from Room 203. ‎ M: Yes, Madam. What can I do for you?‎ W: I’m not sure about the checkout time. I mean, how soon do I have to leave my room?‎ M: Normally, it’s by 12 o’clock on the day when you leave.‎ W: Oh, dear.‎ M: Is there a problem, Madam?‎ W: Well, you see, my plane takes off at 5 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. How may I help you today?‎ M: I ordered some gifts from your website last week, but they haven’t arrived yet. They were supposed to be here two days ago.‎ W: I’m sorry to hear that, sir. Do you have the order number?‎ M: Yes, it’s 855321.‎ W: One moment, please… All right, sir. I think I’ve discovered what’s going on. A couple of items in your order were damaged during transport. We are in the process of shipping your new items, but it could take up to ten days for you to receive them. ‎ Text 9‎ W: Thanks a lot for coming again.‎ M: Tell me what happened this time. Is it the keyboard again or the mouse? ‎ W: Well, the keyboard is OK now. And the mouse is working well, too, even though you suggested that I get a new one last time. Actually, the problem is when I was working this morning, the screen suddenly went black. ‎ M: OK. Let me have a look. The screen seems to be working, so I’ll take a look at the inside of the laptop. Did you save your files?‎ W: No, since I didn’t know that the computer would stop working. Please don’t tell me I’ve lost my report.‎ M: I’m afraid so. Here’s the problem — something has overheated inside the laptop. ‎ W: Can you fix it quickly? ‎ M: I’ll try. It may take a couple of hours. I’ll have to take it back to my shop and fix it. I’ll test it before I call you. Can I contact you on your mobile phone?‎ W: Of course. I’ve learned a lesson today.‎ M: What’s that?‎ W: Always save your files when you’re working on the computer.‎ Text 10 ‎ This is the last time I’ll be addressing you as CEO of this company. Those are strange words to say, but the time has come for me to step down. I’ll remain chairman of the board, and concentrate on helping us grow our brand internationally. I’ll appoint Quinn Constantine as CEO of this company. He is a man who is not only our executive vice-president but someone who has dedicated his entire career to our firm. Quinn came aboard 20 years ago, fresh out of college, and began as a software engineer. His drive and wisdom have been important in developing our most popular and successful products. He has spent the past 5 years working closely with me. I can assure you that he is well prepared for this change, and is qualified to keep this company among the leaders in an increasingly competitive high-tech industry. I expect there will be little change in our day-to-day operations, but I’ll let your new boss speak for himself. Ladies and gentlemen, here’s Quinn Constantine.‎
