That’s because he is completely blind. When Derek was born, over 24 years ago, he got his name from Derek Ho, the first Hawaiian surfing world champion. A surfing enthusiast himself, Ernesto dreamed that his son would share the talent(才干)of his uncle, a professional surfer. Unfortunately, Derek was born completely blind, but this didn’t stop his family from believing that he could do anything he wanted, even if that meant becoming a surfer. At age 2, Derek received a bodyboard and the beaches of Guarapari, Brazil, became his backyard. He was always comfortable in the water and surfing was in his blood, but he didn’t actually try riding a wave until he turned 17, when his father bought him a surfboard. His father taught him the basics and encouraged him to keep practicing, but after successfully standing up on the surfboard, Derek knew he needed to become much better if he was going to achieve Ernesto’s dream and become a professional surfer. So he joined the Praia do Morro surf school, where he studied under coach Fabio Maru. Standing up on a surfboard and conquering small waves is one thing, while gathering the courage to take on Hawii’s board-breaking Pipeline is another. But that’s exactly what Derek Rabelo set out to do just months after learning how to surf. Everyone told him it was too dangerous, but he felt he could do it, and he did, earning the praise of famous professional surfers like Keely Slater and Mick fanning. Now 24, Rabelo has been surfing the Pipeline every winter since. 24. What does the first paragraph tell us? A. Good eyesight is necessary for becoming good surfers B. Derek Rabelo is the only blind professional surfer to conquer Hawaii’s big wave break 25. How did Ernesto behave after Derek was born? A. He never lost confidence in him B. He named him after his uncle C. He sent him to a surfing champion D. He started his own interest in surfing 26. After Derek was able to stand up on the surfboard, he _________. Which of the following words can best describe Derek according to the last paragraph? A. Skillful but proud B. Brave and confident C. Courageous but stubborn D. Thoughtful and modest C In a nice cottage with a large garden in a small town of England, He was seen to water or fertilize his flowers all the time. The garden was obviously well-tended and the flowers were so gorgeous that every passer-by would stop fer a look. It was like a baby that was taken good care of. One day a young painter went by the old man’s garden. He stared at the splendid garden and the special cottage, completely lost in admiration at the beauty of these sights, picturing how happy he would be if he lived in such a beautiful place. Then, suddenly he found the gardener was blind. Shocked, the painter approached him, asking, “Why are you busy looking after these flowers every day but in fact you cannot see them?” The blind man smiled , “ I can tell you some reasons. First, I was a gardener when I was young. I saw the flowers every day and I really enjoy the job. Second, although I can’t see these flowers now, I can touch them. Third, I can smell the sweetness of them.As to the last one, that's you.” “Me? But you don’t know me.” responded the painter, puzzled still. “Yeah, it’s true that I don’t know you. But I know flowers are like angels. I know many people who are enthusiastic about life would stop by and the beauty of my garden will get them into a good mood. Meanwhile, They also give me a chance to have a word with you here and to enjoy the happiness these flowers have brought us.” The old man’s words touched the painter. He grew flowers and regarded them as a link of minds. Every flower had eyes with which they could see kindness of the old man's heart and the sweetness of his soul. He grew flowers in his heart. Just like Beethoven, who was deaf, but composed a sea of attractive tunes, the blind man created beauty for the world. 28. Why did many passers-by like to stop by the garden? A. Because they wanted to help the old man. B. Because they were attracted by the flowers. C. Because they were curious about the stories. D. Because they were moved by the gardener. 29. A Disabled Man like Beethoven D Is it OK for children to count on their fingers? Generations of pupils have been discouraged by their teachers from using their hands when learning maths. But a new research article published in Frontiers in Education shows using fingers may be a very important part of maths learning. The article, by Professor Tim Jay of Sheffield Hallam University and independent researcher Dr Julie Betenson, substantiates what parents have long felt -- that the finger games children often play at home are central to their education. The researchers worked with 137 primary pupils aged between six and seven. All the children were given different combinations of counting and number games to play -- but only some were given exercises which involved finger-training. Some pupils played games involving number symbols, such as dominoes, shut-the-box, or snakes and ladders. Other pupils were asked to play finger games, such as being asked to hold up a given number of fingers, or numbering fingers from 1 to 5 and then having to match one of them by touching it against the corresponding(对应) finger on the other hand, or following coloured lines using a particular finger. Both these groups did a little better in maths tests than a third group of pupils who had simply had 'business as usual' with their teachers. But the group which did both the counting and the finger games performed far better. This study provides evidence that fingers provide children with a “bridge” between different representations of numbers, which can be verbal, written or symbolic. Combined finger training and number games could be a useful tool for teachers to support children's understanding of numbers. 32. How did the author introduce the topic of the text? A. By providing evidence B. By raising a question C. By giving an example D. By making comparisons 33. The underlined word “substantiates” in paragraph 2 most probably means “______”. A. supports B. changes C. ignores D. advertises 34. What can we know about the research mentioned in the text? A. It is carried out by two university professors B. Its research subjects are mostly pre-school children C. It is based on the comparison of two groups of children D. Its findings should draw the attention of math teachers. 35. (Text 10) Raising rabbits is a fun experience. Whether you are getting young rabbits or old ones, you’ll experience all of the joys of raising them. Raising rabbits is much like raising other animals. Here’re some things to help you raise and care for your rabbits so that they can live a happy life. When you bring rabbits home, they will be scared, because rabbits are nervous by nature. Allow them a few weeks to get used to their surroundings. Always make sure your rabbits have a cage big enough to live in. They need to have enough room to move around, especially if they stay indoors and you will cage them while you are gone. This is the safest option for your rabbits as well. When feeding always make sure to keep their diet consistent. Pet rabbits don’t like it when their food is changed often. Aside from food, water is the most important for a rabbit. Always make sure they have fresh cold water! Provide a treat for them every now and then like carrots. There are certain types of treats at pet stores that are good, and your rabbits may like them. Rabbit care also means providing your rabbits with toys. Cat toys work great, especially balls with bells in the center. Larger rabbits will even play with things such as pop cans and pop bottles. Raising rabbits is the same as owning a dog or cat. We hope you have enjoyed learning how to raise and care for rabbits. It requires a lot of efforts, but it will also bring you many years of joy and happiness 1-5 CABCB 6-10 CABCA 11-15 CABAB 16-20 CCBAB查看更多
