Sometimes I think I’m the only girl who notices these quiet but beautiful things. But if it hadn’t been for a crowded restaurant, I wouldn’t have ever noticed Valeri. Valeri was a new student. She walked to class with her books against her chest and her head down. She talked only when the teacher asked her a question. After a month at our school, she hadn’t made any friend. One day at lunch, most tables being full, I had nowhere to sit. Valeri sat alone, book in hand. I walked over to her, “Is that a good book?” Valeri gave a small nod and went back to reading. “What’s it about?” I asked. After seconds of silence, she looked at me, her eyes shining, “Well, it’s about a dragon! This boy, Eragon, finds this dragon egg when he goes playing one day. He thinks it’s a rock! The egg hatches(孵化)and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big .” Two weeks later, I was sitting in the auditorium(礼堂)enjoying the talent show. Then a shy girl walked on stage. I recognized her immediately. Valeri held a violin in one hand and a bow in the other. She started to play. The notes formed a soft, sweet tune. The auditorium fell completely silent until we realized the music was finished. I smiled to myself. Valeri wasn’t just “a quiet girl”. She knew about wonderful books and could play the violin like nothing I’d ever heard. Like a butterfly, she was beautiful and amazing when you looked closely. 1. The author went to sit beside Valeri because _______. A. Valeri invited her to sit there B. Valeri’s book drew her attention C. no more empty seats were left D. she wanted to make friends with Valeri 2. In the book Valeri was reading, _______raised the dragon. A. Eragon’ father B. Eragon C. Eragon’s cousin D. Eragon’s uncle 3. Butterflies are mentioned in the text to show _______. A. the beauty of butterflies B. the author’s interest C. the character of Valeri D. the qualities of friends 4. Which of the following words can best describe Valeri? A. Quiet and talented. B. Friendly and active. C. Careful and talkative. D. Kind and enthusiastic. B Best places to visit in Australia Are you looking for the best places to see in Australia? Here are the top 5 places to visit in Australia. It includes the best, the most beautiful and the most famous. Sydney For those who have made a flight from the other side of the world, if you come and don't see Sydney, it is a bit like going to Germany and not drinking a beer, or to England and not seeing London, or America and not trying a hot dog. There is plenty to see and do in Sydney apart from the well known attractions of the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and Bondi beaches. Byron Bay Located in New South Wales, just south of the Queensland border, Byron Bay is popular with not just international tourists, but is also a favorite holiday destination of Australians. The lighthouse is amazing at sunset (and it is the most easterly part of mainland Australia). There are a range of music festivals over the year that attract international and local musicians alike. The Great Ocean Road The Great Ocean Road, located in Victoria, is one of the best scenic drives of the world. Its official length is 243 kms (roughly 150 miles), but it will take you a full day to enjoy it due to the narrow and windy traffic lanes (only one in each direction). Daintree Rainforest Located in northern Queensland, roughly 110 kms north of Cairns, the rainforest is a nature wonderland. It is Australia's largest rainforest, about 20% of Australia's native bird species can be found within the Daintree. The Great Barrier Reef Located in Queensland, this attraction is one of those attractions that are actually known by everyone. Extending for about 2,300 kms, it is home to many rare, endangered and unique animals and plant species. 5.Which places will you go in Australia if you are interested in music? A. Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef B. Byron Bay and Daintree Rainforest C. The Great Ocean Road and Byron Bay D. Byron Bay and Sydney 6.Where can you see unique and endangered animals in Australia? A. Daintree Rainforest B. The Great Barrier Reef C. Byron Bay D. Sydney 7.What is the biggest problem when travelling in the Great Ocean Road? A. Its traffic problems. B. Its official length. C. You can’t eat an America hot dog there. D. You must make a flight from the other side of the world. C I got invited to go with some friends to a game at another school. A senior will be driving us, and I think she’s a good driver, but it’s someone my parents don’t know. I want to tell my parents where I’m going, but what if I ask and they say “no”? I’ll end up wishing I never mentioned it and just went ahead and did it anyway. If you want more privileges, it’s best to build a track record of honesty and trust. Letting a parent know where you’re going is always a good idea. You may worry that telling your parents puts you at risk of getting “no” for an answer. But there’s a good chance your parents might be OK with you going. If you go but don’t tell them, you risk losing something more important — your parents’ trust. Parents who find out their kids did something behind their backs may be less likely to give permission to do things in the future. When trust is broken like this, parents wonder if teens are trying to hide something — and what they imagine can be far worse than the reality. Before you talk to your parents about the game, think about which approach will help them feel most comfortable with giving you more freedom. Maybe they’d like to meet the person driving or talk to friends who have driven with her in the past. If your parents have questions or hesitate about letting you go, find out what their worries are and then do your best to answer them. 8.From Paragraph 1 we know that the writer _________. A. appears nervous B. feels confused C. looks worried D. seems discouraged 9.What is the best way to get parents’ permission according to the passage? A. To get more privileges from them. B. To risk gaining their permission. C. To keep off the track of reality. D. To be honest and win their trust. 10.What does the writer really want to tell us? A. Which effective approach to use. B. How to deal with strict parents. C. How to win over parents. D. How to get freedom from parents. 11.Who do you think the passage is intended for? A. Parents. B. Friends. C. Drivers. D. Teenagers. D Today just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an “agricultural revolution”. On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for pig producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power. Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand” that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make amazing changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long. 1.According to the passage, computers can NOT help farmers decide _______. A. what livestock to raise B. whether to plant a certain kind of crop C. how much money they can earn from their products D. when to sell their products 2.Which of the following statements is true? A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers. B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today’s farms. C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present. D. Students take computer classes on farms. 3.According to the engineers, _______will be done by robots in the near future. A. all farm work B. milking cows C. most of the farm work D. some farm work 4.What is the best title for the whole passage? A. Computer, Farmers’ Best Friend B. The Agricultural Revolution C. Farmers in The Future D. Computers and Robots 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to improve your perseverance(毅力) If you are familiar with the story of the hare and the tortoise(乌龟), you know that the tortoise proved that perseverance is much more important than speed. 16 , but fewer people have the patience and perseverance of the tortoise. She can do everything to make sure that I can grow up healthily and happily. She keeps me company, cooks me tasty dinners, and makes my room as clean as possible. On top of that, whenever I get upset, she listens to me and comforts me until I cheered up. I’m very grateful to have such a caring mother. Now, I have a message for everyone here, including myself: since we have grown up, we children should repay our dear mum instead of always trying to receive something from her. We can help her as she helps us. Sometimes even a small talk with mum or a cup of tea for her will shine her through. Thank you for listening.查看更多
