He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe (欠) you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” With these words, Howard Kelly left that house. Years later the woman became badly ill and was finally sent to the hospital in a big city. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous, was called in. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Dressed in his doctor’s clothes, Dr. Kelly went into her room and recognized her at once. From that day on, he gave special attention to her, and decided to do his best to save her life. At last the woman was saved. Dr. Kelly asked the business office to pass the final bill to him. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to the woman’s room. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay for it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. A.The Final Bill B.A Warm-hearted Woman C.A Glass of Milk D.A Famous Doctor C Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books — especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper and bound (装订) between hard covers. There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts of being “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the countless subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet! Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand books, the collector must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small hand carts. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs, have been waiting for them. In places like this they can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old one that may be worth many pounds. 29.According to this passage, Charring Cross Road _________. A.is in the suburbs of London B.is famous for its bookshops C.contains various kinds of shops D.is the busiest street in London 30.In this passage, what does the underlined part “venture off the beaten track” mean? A.Buy books in a most busy street. B.Move away from a busy street. C.Waste time looking for books. D.Take a risk of losing one’s life. 31.On Farringdon Road, _________. A.you can find fine books for the latest books B.there are only small bookshops for the secondhand books C.you can see booksellers selling books on handcarts D.the same books as the ones in the bookshops of Charring Cross Road are sold D Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads in their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get a success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness doesn’t mean money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的)door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person. 32.When you do something wrong, people around you will_______. A.quarrel with you B.help you correct it C.do something wrong like you D.laugh at you 33.What will your friends say when you make great progress? A.Oh, so do I. B.Congratulations! C.Good luck! D.Just so-so! 34.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A.People who have cars would never like to walk in the open air. B.You can get help from others when you are in trouble. C.You can still be a happy person even if you have little money. D.Happiness is always around you though difficulties come towards you. 35.The passage mainly tells us_______. A.parents always care for our life and health B.we’re not happy if we meet with difficulties C.happiness is always around us D.life is colorful 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Make Plans Most people get scared when talking about planning or writing plans. 36 And you need to plan for success as planning really works and inspires you to go straight ahead.
