Oxford Street London is shoppers’ paradise, and most visitors head for Oxford Street. Halfway along is Sel-fridges, one of the world’s first department stores where the architecture and window dressing impress even before you go in. There are at least four other major stores on this street, plus Europe’s largest music shop. In December the atmosphere is especially festive because of the Christmas lights which are always lighted by a politician, a great sportsman, or a super star. Kensington High Street A fashionable area for shopping is Kensington High Street. One of its department stores even has a roof garden-good for relaxing between purchases. There’s also an organic food superstore. Borough Market You can’t visit London and not go to a supermarket. One of the oldest and best for food is probably Borough Market on the south bank of the Thames. Get off the underground at London Bridge and wander among fresh fish stalls, bakeries, and fruit and vegetable sellers. You can also buy specialist food to take away, like cheeses, pork pies, mustard and chutney. More places for bargains Portobello Road on a Saturday is your best choice for jewelry or collector’s items. It’s a short walk from the subway station at Notting Hill Gate and you never know what you will find. For clothes, Camden Market is the place. It gets a little crowded at the weekends, though. Convent Garden offers great experience for the simple pleasure of looking at jewelry and gifts. 21. For what does Oxford Street become special in December? A. Many bargains to choose from. C. The Europe’s largest music shop. B. The wonderful window dressing. D. The lights lit by a famous person. 22. Where can you go to enjoy food? A. Camden Market. C. Borough Market. B. Portobello Road. D. Kensington High Street. 23. Where is this passage probably taken from? A. A science book. C. A shopping guide B. A news report. D. A traveler’s journal. B “We are good mothers,” I said to my friend, as we sat on our comfortable beach chairs under our beach umbrella and watched our children playing in the waves. Out of nowhere, the children took off running. About fifty yards from us, a man—maybe in his fifties—was fishing. The children stood next to him and watched with their little mouths hanging open as he cast the fishing lines. He smiled at them. They ran back to us—all except my three-year-old daughter, Drew. My heart beat wildly with horror. “Drew! Come here! Play with your friends!” I shouted, very aware that my speeches about not talking to strangers weren’t working. It seemed that many parents heard of horrible stories about children being taken away by strangers. Responsible mothers should teach their children that the world is a dangerous place. So I felt relieved when Drew ran towards me and took hold of a shovel (铲子). Then she looked me in the eye: “I want to be with the person.” Again, she approached the middle-aged man, and started digging next to him. Several seconds later, she returned, waving something shiny. “Look, Mommy! A toy fish!” It was, indeed, a toy fish—yellow and rubber. This must have been what he was using to attract the fish. And he’d given it to Drew. The three other children were deeply impressed, and they didn’t try to hide how jealous (妒忌的) they were—clearly, they all wanted the fish. “My friend gave me that fish!” Drew shouted loudly. The sand in front of the umbrella turned into a preschool cage match with a yellow rubber fish flying through the air. I felt like I might cry myself. Unexpectedly, there he was: the man, standing right next to us with three more rubber fish in hand. He handed them to each of the children. By their faces, you would have thought he was actually the really kind big brother. “Thank you,” I said, realizing that there is good and kindness in strangers. 24. How did the author feel when Drew stood beside the man? A. Concerned B. Angry C. Relieved D. Calm 25. What does the author think good mothers should do? A. Be around their kids. C. Teach their kids to behave well. B. Warn their kids of danger. D. Devote themselves to helping their kids. 26. When did the author feel at a loss (迷茫)? A. When Drew handed her the toy fish. B. When the kids fought for the toy fish. C. When the toy fish was covered with sand. D. When the stranger appeared from nowhere. 27. What would be the best title for the text? A. Give a kid a fish C. The world is dangerous B. We are good mothers D. Teach kids to be kind C A list of Benjamin Franklin’s inventions reveals a man of many talents and interests. His natural curiosity about things and the way they work made him try to find ways to make them work better. Ben had poor vision and needed glasses to read. He got tired of constantly taking them off and putting them back on, so he decided to figure out how his glasses let him see both near and far. He had two pairs of glasses cut in half and put half of each lens (镜片) in a single frame. Today, we call them bifocals (双光眼镜). Everyone knows the story of Ben’s famous kite flight. Although he made important discoveries and advancements, Ben did not “invent” the electricity. He did, however, invent the lighting rod which protects buildings and ships from lighting. In colonial America, most people warmed their homes by building a fire in a fireplace even though it was dangerous and used a lot of wood. Ben figured that there had to be a better way. His invention of an iron furnace stove allowed people to warm their homes less dangerously and with less wood. The furnace stove that he invented is called the Franklin Stove. Interestingly enough, Ben also established the first fire company and the first fire insurance company in order to help people live more safely. As a postmaster, Ben had to figure out routes for delivering the mail. He went out riding in his carriage to measure the routes and needed a way to keep track of the distance. He invented a simple odometer and attached it to his carriage. Later, other famous inventors, like Tomas A. Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, followed in Ben’s footsteps by trying to find ways to help people live better. 28. How many things invented by Benjamin Franklin are mentioned in the passage? A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6. 29. What do we know about the Franklin Stove? A. It is safer and can save wood. B. It is made of iron and easy to carry. C. It is much smaller than the traditional stove. D. It reaches the requirements of the fire company. 30. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. Franklin invented the bifocals because of his poor vision. B. Franklin invented the odometer to make his riding easier. C. Franklin first invented the electricity and then the lighting rod. D. Franklin invented the odometer when he worked in a post office. 31. What characteristic did Franklin, Edison and Bell have in common? A. They made people’s life simple. B. They were born in the same age. C. They were excellent students at school. D. They had a strong desire to make life better. D It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why. First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is “You can’t”. Look around you. With very few exceptions, either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new. Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeeded. Every time you make a mistake you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources in the form of time and money so don’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate (分配) these resources appropriately so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your business and your career. There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.” So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed. 32. What can we infer from the second paragraph? A. Mistakes are better than not trying. B. We are all afraid of trying new things. C. It’s common for people to make mistakes. D. Mistakes are unnecessary for development. 33. What does the underlined word “eliminate” means? A. Solve. B. Avoid. C. Accept. D. Remove. 34. According to the article, what should you pay attention to about making mistakes? A. Trying things out one by one. C. Considering the consequences. B. Accepting the punishment willingly. D. Avoiding making the same mistakes. 35. What would the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake? A. I’d better stay out of trouble. C. Never mind, I can always try again. B. Ok! Now I can learn something. D. Look at this mess. Anyone would be upset. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 36 You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so. However, anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how: Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which maybe a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject. Make good use of your time in class. 38 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 39 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you’ll remember it longer. Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried. 40 You will probably discover them after you have tried these. A. Maybe you are an average student. B. This will help you understand the next class. C. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard. E. There are other methods that might help you with your studying. F. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. G. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class. Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned twelve, a bunch of white gardenia (栀子花) was delivered to my house. (17) This means that it had been built before recorded history began. Experts say that the first stones were put there by people between 3000-2000 BC. (18) That makes Stonehenge one of the oldest constructions in the world. However, it’s not like the pyramids in Egypt or the Great Wall of China. Stonehenge is just a collection of large stones that are balanced on top of each other. Some of the supporting stones are more than 7.3 meters tall. In comparison, the basketball player Yao Ming is 2.29 meters tall. But like the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge wasn’t built in a day. In fact, experts believe that there were many stages in the construction of Stonehenge, (19) the last of which was finished around 1600 BC. Most scientists believe that it is an ancient burial ground. (20) Other people believe it has important religious associations. Scientists have been studying Stonehenge for over 400 years, and they are still finding new things. In 2014, scientists found more burial grounds that they believe come from 4000 BC.查看更多
