B A month before my first marathon(马拉松), one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead. I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic". The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!" By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving! As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running. I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner". 24. A month before the marathon, the author ____________. A. was well trained B. lost hope C. made up his mind to run D. felt scared 25.Why did the author mention the P.E.class in his 7th year? A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher. B. To tell the readers with a funny story. C. To show he was not talented in sports. D. To share a precious memory. 26. How was the author’s first marathon? A.He got the first prize. B. He quit halfway. C.He made it. D. He walked to the end. 27. What does the story mainly tell us? A.A man owes his success to his family support. B.A winner is one with a great effort of will. C.One is never too old to learn. D.Failure is the mother of success. C Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate (交际) with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty. Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message? 28.It can be concluded from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that . A.bees don’t like B.have an unfamiliar shape C.are lying on the ground D.have an unpleasant taste 29.The willow tree described in the passage protected itself by . A.growing more branches B.changing its leaf chemistry C.communicating with birds and bees D.shaking caterpillars off 30.According to the passage, the willow tree was able to communicate with other trees by . A. waving its branches B. giving off a special smell C.dropping its leaves D.changing the colour of its trunk 31.According to this passage, bees communicate by . A.smelling one another B. making unusual sound C.making special movement D. touching one another D Doctors say anger can be a very harmful emotion unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that angry feelings can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, losing control of themselves. But other people repress their anger. They cannot or will not express it. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain gives off the same hormones (荷尔蒙) that are produced during tense situations. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood and narrow the blood vessels to the interstices(空隙). In general, the person feels excited and ready to act. Doctors said that repressing these feelings only makes the feelings continue. And this can lead to many medical problems. Doctors thought a person could prevent these problems by letting the anger out by expressing it freely. But recently some doctors held a different view. They said that people who express anger repeatedly and violently did become, in fact, more and not less angry. They said this, too, can cause medical problems. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, and then decide if the cause is serious. If it is, they say: “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.” 32.What does the phrase “repress anger” mean? A. Keep one’s anger inside. B. Express one’s anger openly. C. Treat one’s anger calmly and reasonably D. Forget one’s anger. 33.Repressing anger is considered to be dangerous because of all the following EXCEPT that_______. A. the heart rate increases B. the blood pressure rises C. the blood contains sugar D. some blood vessels become thinner 34. When you get angry, which of the following should you do for the good of health? A. Treating the anger properly. B. Expressing the anger C. Learning how to make a deal. D. Repressing the anger 35. What is the central topic of this passage about? A. The different ways of dealing with anger. B. The argument between the new and old views about anger. C. New medical discoveries. D.
