The whole family was still in shock when her husband, Uncle Ronnie, died a week later. I longed to have a small item of Aunt Karen’s to remember her by, but seeing her children and grandchildren overcome by the grief(悲痛) of this double loss made me shy away from asking. A few months after Aunt Karen’s death, I was on my way to work when I saw Rescued Treasures, a local second-hand store. I only had a couple of dollars on me and didn’t really intend to buy anything, but I stopped anyway just to look inside. I had been shopping around for a few minutes when a small, black handbag caught my eye. It wasn’t fancy or special. I didn’t really need a handbag and continued to look around the store, but something kept drawing me back to that handbag. Finally, I checked the price tag (标签). It was just one dollar. The handbag stayed in the back of my car for weeks until I came upon it during a car clean-up. I opened it up. I couldn’t believe it. They hadn’t even cleaned it out. It was still full of junk, old candy wrappers, old receipts (收据) and used paper. Usually the store emptied things inside, so there wouldn’t be any surprises for a new owner. I threw away some wastes, and sorted through the receipts, when I found one item in the small inside pocket. It was an insurance card with the name “Karen Stair” written on it. I began to cry. According to a research published in the Journal of Clinical Virology, if you keep your eye on the weather and watch for the first major dip in the temperature, you can essentially mark your calendar in prediction for an outbreak the flu. To figure out how the weather and flu outbreak may be connected, researchers analyzed statistics of 20,000 people in an area over three seasons. The number of people who caught the flu was then compared with local weather data. After each season, the team noticed one consistent finding: The first really cold period with low outdoor temperatures and low humidity (湿度) was always followed by a week of a mass influenza outbreak. The researchers say that aerosol particles (气溶胶粒子) containing virus and liquid are more able to spread in cold and dry weather. So, in theory, if you sneeze or cough and the surrounding air is very dry, the air will absorb the moisture and the particles containing the virus keep spreading through the air for a longer period of time. Luckily there are ways to keep off the illness regardless of(不管) the weather. Washing your hands, coughing into the crook (弯曲) of your arm and getting vaccine (疫苗) are the best ways to prevent the flu from spreading. People over the age of 65, pregnant women and young children are at the highest risk(风险) of developing complications (并发症) related to the virus, according to the CDC. 28. From the first paragraph we can infer that . A. people may easily fall sick B. flu is often related to weather changes C. nobody can predict when one gets flu D. weather report plays an important part in life 29. How did the researchers draw the conclusion of the study? A. By analyzing the data[] B. By doing questionnaires C. .By carrying out experiments D. By making observation 30. Why do people catch the flu easily in cold and dry weather? A. The colder it is, the more kinds of flu there are B. Cold and dry weather helps the spread of virus C. Gold and dry weather can prevent people from doing exercise D. Low temperature can increase the number of aerosol particles 31. What can we learn about from the last paragraph? A. The vaccines for flu B. The main ways to cure flu C. The people who are easy to get flu D. The most common kind of flu virus D Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it’s a good thing they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter ... and it’s all because of technology. “We move quickly from one site to another on the web,” says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate.” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions(分心) too: email, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites. Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” says Julia Wood, from London. “Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer.” Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect: “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.” But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says: “On web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.” 32 Why does the writer mention “goldfish” ? A. To analyze data. B. To suggest a way out. C. To settle problems. D. To introduce a topic. 33. What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker? A. Skipping around the internet. B. Time to digest information. C. Traditional methods of reading. D. Making decisions. 34. What will help students overcome a short attention span? A. Receiving emails. B. Reading more books. C. Texting messages. D. Watching quickie movies. 35. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly? A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable. C. Supportive. D. Skeptical. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Every person wants to achieve the goals set at the beginning of a new school year. The following are some ways to help you achieve your goals. ● 36 When it comes to choosing your goal, ensure that it states precisely what it is that you want to achieve. Don’t generalize(概括). Your goal should involve both what you want to achieve and the effort that you will put in to achieve it. ● 37 Having a copy of your goal makes it real. You can write you goal in a journal you’ll be keeping all year, or you can write it on a poster and stick it on your desk so that you can look at it each day. Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you’re training your brain to accept the effort needed to make the goal happen. ●Try various methods. One may not work while another may be just right for you. 38 Some people learn best through writing, some through listening and reading, and some through talking it through. Once you realize which way works for you, you can work better and achieve your goal easily. ●Think positive. 39 Negative thoughts are unhelpful and they became roadblocks. Stop telling yourself you can’t and start telling yourself you can, and talk about you are doing rather than hoping you can do something. Always believe that you’re capable, even if you have difficulty along the way. ●Reward yourself along the way. 40 Occasionally, when you’ve achieved certain “milestones” in your goal plan, take a break and reward yourself. Watch a movie, visit a friend who lives across town, go to the ice cream shop with your friends or buy yourself something new. A. Write down your goal. B. Be aware of the way you learn best. C. Choose specific and realistic goals. D. Remember that everyone makes mistakes. E. All study and no reward can break your spirit. F. Set aside some time each week for exercise. G. If you’re not in the right state of mind, you won’t be able to succeed. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A, B, C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I was on my way to visit my cousin in Wales.
