Is that you?” The woman speaking to me at the baseball game looked a little familiar. “Marci?” I asked. “It is you!” she cried out, smiling broadly. “Gosh, it’s good to see you again!” It was good to see Marci, too. Off and on during the past few decades, I’ve wondered about her. I almost tried to search for her a few years ago after talking to a friend who had indicated that the 1990s had been pretty rough for Marci. So meeting her at the baseball game was really out of expectation. We spent a few minutes talking about our lives — the good old, bad old days. Then Marci grew quiet for a moment. “You know, Joe,” she said, “I’ve always wanted to tell you ... how ... how sorry for the way I treated you. You must have been hurt both physically and mentally.” I was a little embarrassed. I tuned and looked at her. “It’s OK,” I said, “No big deal!” “But I was such a jerk,” she continued. Yes, you were, I thought. “We were both pretty young,” I smiled. “I know,” she said, “It’s just always bothered me, remembering how mean I was to you. And I’ve wanted to tell you that I’m sorry.” The expression on her face was warm and sincere. And there was something in her eyes — it looked a lot like relief. “OK,” I said, “Apology accepted!” Overcome by the sweetness of the moment, I reached an arm around her and gave her a quick hug. Just then, the crowd erupted with a huge cheer, and Marci and I both returned our attention to the game. By the time I looked over to where she had been, she was gone. But the warm, wonderful feeling of our brief exchange was still there, and continues to the day whenever I think about it. It isn’t enough to just say “I’m sorry” and “you’re forgotten”. But when those words are truly felt and sincerely expressed, they can open the door to the miracles of the heart. Forgiveness can give peace to an injured soul — even years after the fact, even at a baseball game. 24. What kind of life did Marci live during the late 20th century according to the passage? A. Happy. B. Busy. C. Simple. D. Hard. 25. What does the underlined “jerk” in the third paragraph mean? A. A humorous person. B. A careless person. C. A cruel person. D. An honest person. 26. Why did Marci look in relief after talking with the author? A. Because her favourite team won the game. B. Because she made an apology to the author. C. Because she learned Joe was living a good life. D. Because she found she was not mean any longer. 27. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Excitement of a Baseball Game. B. Mental Burden of a Woman C. Relief of Finding a Friend. D. Miracles of Forgiveness. C What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any especially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs. Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work. 28. What is the passage mainly about? A. The importance of working hard at school. B. Choosing a career according to one’s strengths. C. How to face one’s weakness. D. The value of school work. 29. All the subjects may have direct value for job hunting except _________. A. mathematics B. English C. history D. technical drawing 30. The writer thinks that a student’s part-time job is probably_____. A. a good way to find out his weak points B. of great use for his work in the future C. one of the best ways of earning extra money D. a waste of time he could have spent on study 31.From the passage we learn that if a student’s school performance is not good, he ____. A. should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities B. will be regretful about his bad results C. may also do well in his future work D. should restart his study at school D Charles Dickens was one of the most beloved storytellers in the English language. His novels made him famous in his own time, and continue as classics in ours. Dickens began his literary career with almost no formal education. He was born in Landport, on Feb. 7, 1812, the second of eight children. When he was 12, his father was sent to debtor’s prison. Dickens was forced to quit school and work in a London blacking factory. He would rework(改写) that terrible experience into his fiction for the rest of his life. "He was a social reformer," says actor Simon Callow, author of a new biography called Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World. "He knew what poverty was. He knew what it was to be rejected, to be cast aside, to live in squalor (悲惨)." And so Dickens wrote with great sympathy for the suffering of innocent and vulnerable (易受攻击的) children — characters like David Copperfield, Little Dorrit and the orphan, Oliver Twist. With his slice of bread in his hand, and his little brown parish cap on his head, Oliver was now led away from the wretched home, where one kind word or look never lighted the gloom of his infant (幼儿) days. Yet he burst into an agony of childish grief as the cottage gate closed after him. Wretched as were the little companions in misery he was now leaving behind him, they were the only friends he had ever had. His first book Sketches by Boz came out in 1836. With the appearance of Oliver Twist in London periodicals in 1837, the 25-year-old Dickens became the most popular writer in England. But his first love was theater, and he considered becoming an actor. "When he was actually writing, he became his characters," says Peter Ackroyd, author of Dickens: Public Life and Private Passion. "He would get up from his desk, go over to the mirror and mouth the words — do the expressions, grimaces (鬼脸), whatever, and then laugh, chuckle to himself, then go back to his desk and write it down." Dickens created 989 named characters, which increased his popularity. Every one of his major works has been adapted for either stage or screen. A Christmas Carol inspired more than a dozen films, from Alistair Sims’ Scrooge in 1951 to Jim Carrey’s voicing of the same character in Disney’s 2009, 3-D animated film. Dickens died five years later in 1870, after a stroke at age 58. As a comic talent and a social reformer, Dickens’ achievement was extraordinary, says novelist T.C. Boyle, who earned a doctorate in Victorian literature. "He achieved what any great artist achieves — a body of work that has entertained and delighted and instructed people down through the ages. That’s what we all hope for," says Boyle. 32. What can probably be reflected in Dickens’ works? A. His love for his family. B. His desire for formal education. C. His childhood sufferings. D. His reason for choosing literary career. 33. The author quotes Dickens’ description of Oliver Twist mainly to show . A. that Dickens knew well about poor children B. that Dickens was full of pity for poor children C. what real poverty was like in his days D. what kind of life Oliver Twist lived 34. We can learn from the passage that . A. all the characters created by Dickens are popular B. people prefer films based on Dickens’ novels to his works C. Dickens were more interested in performing than in writing D. the films and plays based on Dickens’ novels raise his popularity 35. What did Dickens intend to do by telling his stories? A. To amuse his readers and change society. B. To analyze the nature of society he was in. C. To make an attack on the upper class of the time. D. Here are some ways I think that can deal with stress. The first thing you can try is to exercise. Exercises like walking or running not only accumulate energy but also build up confidence. Another way is to enjoy some games with friends, which can take your mind off the stress and make you more relaxed.
