Unfortunately, they're also disappearing faster than ever.‎ ‎ According to a warning by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) on Oct.8, the world is in its third recorded global coral bleaching(白化)since 1998 and 2010. This means no place with coral has been spared,as coral reefs are coming into contact with increasingly warm seas, which is leading to them dying off in large numbers.‎ ‎ Coral bleaching is like human cancer. It happens when corals are under stress from changes in light, nutrients, or temperature. This causes the coral to drive away the symbiotic algae(共生藻类), living within their tissues(组织), which play an important role in providing food for coral while making it colorful. Without the algae, coral reefs become pale and weak. In some cases they are not able to recover and eventually die off.‎ ‎ The current coral bleaching event started back in late 2014 and continued into this year with no signs of stopping. The BBC reports that 35% of coral reefs in the world will likely be affected, and an estimated 4,633 square miles (about 120,000 square kilometers) of coral reefs could die. ‎ ‎ The loss of coral reefs is no small matter.Although they only take up 0.1% of the ocean floor, coral is home to about 25% of marine life. This isn't just a problem for divers and fish, as Eakin pointed out. Coral reefs are important globally, he added, as they protect shorelines, produce money in tourism, and help provide food for 500 million people worldwide. So people cannot overlook the environmental, economic and social effects of the loss.‎ ‎ The NOAA warning about coral bleaching came just about two months before a global climate summit(峰会)in Paris, where hundreds of world leaders will attempt to work our a plan to fight climate change.‎ ‎ Oceans will be a key subject during the summit, and Eakin says there's an "absolutely urgent need" for action.‎ ‎24.Coral reefs, according to the passage, are dying off in large numbers as a result of _________ .‎ A.disease B.warm seas C.dirty water D.a lack of food ‎25.What keeps coral reefs colorful?‎ A.Nutrients. B.Their tissues. C.Light from seawater. D.The symbiotic algae.‎ ‎26.The climate summit in Paris __________ .‎ A.will be held two months before he NOAA warning about coral bleaching B.has worked out a plan to fight climate change - 14 -‎ C.will mainly discuss the problem of oceans D.will regard oceans as a key topic of the global climate ‎27.Why are coral reefs important?‎ a.They protect shorelines. b.They are beneficial to tourism.‎ c.They are home to most marine life. d.They help provide food for 500 million people.‎ A.a b d B.a c d C.a b c D.b c d ‎ C ‎ Increasing numbers of airports, especially in Europe, are promoting a “silent airport” idea. It is to reduce noise pollution, such as airport-wide announcements, without sacrificing timely and helpful updates of information.‎ ‎ International airports were once characterized by their high voices, competing gate announcements and so on.‎ ‎ This is all changing.‎ ‎ Angela Gittens, director general of Airports Council International (ACI), says there is a growing desire among airports and airlines they serve to “create a calm, relaxed atmosphere” without being disturbed by announcements.‎ ‎ “Passengers can relax while they wait for their flight to board in the common airside lounges (休闲区), and food and drink areas,” she says.‎ ‎ In June, Helsinki Airport in Finland — a country where the tourism slogan is “Silence, Please” — became the most recent airport to adopt the silent concept.‎ ‎ As part of its commitment to quieting things down, announcements for flights are made only in boarding gate areas.‎ ‎ Lost track of time in the shop?‎ ‎ Too bad.‎ ‎ Nobody’s going to call you to your flight, as announcements in all terminals will be made only in exceptional emergency circumstances.‎ ‎ Heikki Koski, vice president of Helsinki Airport, says that improved flight information display systems and interactive kiosks (交互式自助服务机), together with advances in mobile technology, are changing the way airports communicate with passengers.‎ ‎ At Munich Airport, InfoGate kiosks allow for video-based, face-to-face conversation with a live customer service representative in the traveler’s language of choice. Interactive signs, on the other hand, give directions at the touch of finger. Passengers can tap a “you are here” display to get directions and approximate walking times to their destinations.‎ ‎ Of course, an airport will never be as silent as a temple.‎ ‎ There will continue to be a need for airport-wide emergency announcements, along with boarding calls.‎ ‎ But at silent airports, the latter can be restricted to specific gates, as has been adopted in Helsinki.‎ ‎28. What is Angela Gittens, opinion on the silent airport concept?‎ A. It makes airport noise-free.‎ - 14 -‎ B. It is intended for passengers’ benefit.‎ C. It has changed international airports’ reputation.‎ D. It has encouraged the catering industry in airports.‎ ‎29. What should passengers pay close attention to at Helsinki Airport?‎ A. Their boarding time. B. Finland’s tourism slogan.‎ C. The shops’ opening hours. D. The “you are here” display.‎ ‎30. Why is Munich Airport mentioned in the next?‎ A. To show its popularity. B. To introduce InfoGate kiosks.‎ C. To prove Heikki Koski’s words. D. To be compared with Helsinki Airport.‎ ‎31. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. Silence, please. This is an airport!‎ B. Can airports be as quiet as temples?‎ C. Silent airports all around the world D. Technology helps airports become interactive ‎ D ‎ The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at home with her parents. All she’s ever wanted to do is to become an elementary school teacher. However, Hipp has racked up(累计) $100,000 (about 0.67 million yuan) in student loan debt and isn’t able to earn enough through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server to live anywhere other than home.‎ ‎ To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of adults who have been moving back in with their parents or never leaving home in the first place has been growing steadily.‎ ‎ The Pew Research Center recently reported that 2016 was a milestone in the evolving living arrangements of young adults in the US. Until 2016, the most common living arrangement for young adults was to be living in their own property as part of a couple. UBS Financial Services, a Swiss global financial services company, released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adults still living at home could be that their family doesn’t want them to leave. The report shows that 74 percent of millennials(千禧一代) get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and mentors(导师). In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them. Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Group in the US, said “Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn’t necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest, he said. “They may like living at home and being able to save money.”‎ ‎ He added, “While it has held back household formation and purchases on things, they are probably traveling more and eating out more. I don’t know if it represents a change in moral values, it’s much more common for adult children to live in their parent’s homes because it’s becoming part of the culture.”‎ - 14 -‎ ‎32. What’s the purpose of Caitlin Hipp’s story?‎ A. To prove the author’s view.‎ B. To introduce her situation.‎ C. To present the topic.‎ D. To make readers rethink about the problem.‎ ‎33. What does the underlined part (Paragraph1) probably refer to?‎ A. live with parents B. live independently C. stay at home D. leave home ‎34. According to Hoffman, which of the following is true?‎ A. It isn’t necessary for millennials to leave the nest.‎ B. They can spend less money on their daily life.‎ C. Moral values are changing gradually.‎ D. Young adults are living in a different life style.‎ ‎35. What’s the main idea of the passage?‎ A. Why is the number of the millennial growing steadily?‎ B. Why has the percentage of adults living with their parents been on the rise?‎ C. Why are parents willing to help fund for young adults?‎ D. Why do more adults treat their parents as peers, friends and guides?‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。 ‎ The rules about how to talk, eat and sit, which are highly limited, are observed in most Western restaurants and homes. 36 Many Westerners have no idea how to act at the Chinese dinner table. No forks or knives for them to use! The Chinese host makes great, sweeping arm movements that go over large sections of the table, passing over both food and friends alike. 37 However, it leaves many foreigners at a loss for what to do.‎ In my childhood home, dinner was enjoyed with low voices, and the topics that we could discuss were very limited. 38 If I had to leave the table to use the toilet, I had to excuse myself without mentioning what it was that I was going to do. “May I be excused, please? I need to wash my hands.” I would say. My mother would say, “Sure.” My father would often play a joke on me by saying, “ 39 ”‎ As for eating, we did it quietly. No eating noises were allowed. Everything must be done as quietly as possible. If any sound was created by eating food or drinking, it would be considered as bad manners! ‎ ‎ 40 He is to sit up straight with the recessive hand (usually the left) in one’s lap holding a napkin while the dominant hand (usually the right) holds the - 14 -‎ ‎ fork or spoon.
