One day, he was told to investigate a noise complaint (投诉). A group of boys were playing basketball in the street. Instead of lecturing the boys or sending them home, White joined them. He said: “Can you believe someone is calling to complain about kids playing basketball in the street -- can you believe that?”‎ White started shooting baskets with the kids. And a few minutes later, some more boys came and played the game. Later, the police officer and the kids lowered the basketball hoop and were having a “slam-dunk” (灌篮) contest.‎ The camera on White’s police car recorded the event. The police department posted the video on Facebook. It was seen over 15 million times. ‎ Before he left the boys, White said he would come back again with “backup”. That generally is what police officers say when they are requesting help from other officers.‎ As the video spread, a basketball star became interested in what happened i 14‎ n Gainesville. That player was Shaquille O’Neal. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers when they won the National Basketball Association championship. He also played for the Orlando Magic, a team not far from Gainesville. ‎ The other day, O’Neal visited the Gainesville police and spoke with White. And then they went out to “the scene”. That is what police officers call the area where a crime (犯罪活动) happened. But of course, there was no crime.‎ This time, White told the boys, “I told you I was going to bring some backup. Right? You guys ready?” And O’Neal turned up from a nearby car. The kids got really excited. O’Neal played basketball with the boys and other officers as a crowd gathered. O’Neal eventually gathered the boys together and offered some wise words, “Be a leader, not a follower”, “Respect your peers(同龄人) and your elders”, and “You can be whatever you want to be”.‎ ‎21. Why didn’t White send the kids home?‎ A. He was also a basketball fan. B. The kids didn’t play in the street.‎ C. He didn’t think it was a problem. D. The kids promised not to make a noise.‎ ‎22. The HR manager interviewed him and then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.‎ ‎“You are employed,” he said. “Give me your e-mail address and I’ll send you the application to fill in, as well as the date when you may start.”‎ The man replied, “But I don’t have a computer, neither an e-mail”.‎ ‎“I’m sorry”, said the HR manager. “If you don’t have an e-mail, that means you do not exist. And anyone who doesn’t exist, cannot have the job.”‎ The man left with no hope at all. He didn’t know what to do, with only $10 in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy 10 kilos of tomatoes. He then sold the tomatoes in a door-to-door round. In less than two hours, he succeeded in doubling his capital (资产). He repeated the operation three times, and returned home with $60.‎ The man realized that he can survive by this way, and started to go every day 14‎ ‎ earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet (车队) of delivery vehicles. 5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers in the US.‎ He started to plan his family’s future, and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance agent (代理人), and chose a protection plan.‎ When the conversation was finished, the agent asked him his email.‎ The man replied, “I don’t have an email.”‎ The broker answered curiously, “You don’t have an e-mail, and yet have succeeded in building an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an e mail? The man thought for a while and replied, “Yes, I’d be an office boy at Microsoft!”‎ ‎25. Why didn’t the HR manager employ the man? ‎ A. There is a thought by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what is known as a received pronunciation (RP, 标准发音) accent, also called “the Queen’s English”.‎ While many people do indeed talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents. Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country - from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Mid-lands - are just three of the countless non-RP accents British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart.‎ But besides disappointing foreign visitors, not speaking in an RP accent may mean a British person is judged, or even treated differently, in their everyday life.‎ ‎ In a 2015 study by The University of South Wales, UK, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded.‎ ‎ The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working class. ‎ 14‎ ‎“Specific regional accents are often received as inferior and belonging to groups lacking in prestige (声望),” Lance Workman, leader of the study, told The Telegraph. “It is clear that many of those with regional accents are still hitting a glass ceiling.” But English-learners who want to sound more British should not go straight for RP, as many do. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you an advantage.‎ Kong Seongjae, 25, better known as “Korean Billy”, is an internet celebrity (名人) from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He’s now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he’s learned. “British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much more friendly. I think it makes a bit of bond (情感纽带)between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,” he said.‎ So if you’re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.‎ ‎28. What is the article mainly about?‎ A. how much British people value the RP accent ‎ B. a comparison between different British accents ‎ C. the impact of regional accents on people’s lives ‎ D. a study about the most intelligent accent in Britain ‎ ‎29. What do many British people think of the Brummie accent?‎ A. It is smart and easy to understand B. It has the closest link to the RP accent ‎ C. It is favored by foreign visitors to the UK ‎ ‎ D. It is spoken by people with a lower level of education ‎30. The underlined word “inferior” in Paragraph 8 probably means_________.‎ ‎ A. having a very short history ‎ B. feeling comfortable and relaxed ‎ ‎ C. showing unusual or unexpected qualities ‎ ‎ D. being less important or not as good as something else ‎ ‎31. The author used Kong Seongjae’s story to__________. ‎ A. explain how accents can help build ties with local people ‎ B. give an example of how to become famous online quickly C. prove that people’s interest in the RP accent is dropping off D. show that it’s important to pick up different accents when learning English D Born in China, which came out in the Chinese mainland in August last year, was one of the only documentaries (纪录片) to focus on Chinese wildlife. And now, the hit production has made it to the US. Released on April 21, the movie, directed by top Chinese filmmaker Lu Chuan, tells the story of three animal families native to China: pandas, snow leopards, and golden monkeys. The documentary is 79 minutes long but it took three years to shoot. ‎ 14‎ According to Variety, the documentary celebrates the belief that “loss and death are all part of the circle of life”, and leave the audiences with the feeling of “Animals – they’re just like us.” ‎ For example, the panda story follows how Ya Ya raises her cub (幼崽), Mei Mei, in a bamboo forest. But it’s not just the daily lives of the lovely creatures that are shown. “Finally, the two must separate, not because something harsh (严酷的) happens but simply because life happens. ‎ A 2-year-old golden monkey, after feeling like his life has been changed for the worse when his new baby sister arrives, quickly joins a group of free-spirited monkeys. Eventually, he returns to his family after understanding the meaning of responsibility. ‎ A mother snow leopard faces the challenge of raising her two cubs in a harsh environment on the Tibetan Plateau (高原). Since the cubs are still unable to hunt for themselves, feeding them through the freezing winter is her top concern. However, competition from other snow leopards makes their survival very difficult.‎ Not only does the documentary promote the beauty of China’s wildlife, but also presents a different side of the country to the rest of the world. When thinking of China, many people only “think of Beijing and Shanghai and prosperity,” British scientist Jane Goodall told the Associated Press, “but China is huge and some of these landscapes that are captured in this film are truly spectacular (壮丽的).” In this sense, Born in China is, as Variety put it, a “cross-cultural diplomacy (外交)” which shows “the great diversity of Chinese landscapes.” ‎ ‎32. Which statement is true according to the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Born in China is a short story and took a short time to finish shooting it. ‎ B. Born in China shows the stories of famous animals from different countries.‎ ‎ C. American people enjoyed the documentary Born in China earlier than Chinese.‎ ‎ D. Born in China is a film directed by Chinese director telling stories about Chinese creatures.‎ ‎33. Why must the panda mom and her cub separate at last?‎ ‎ A. because her cub get married. ‎ B. because her cub can feed herself.‎ C. because the panda mom suffers death at last.‎ D. because the panda mom has no duty to raise adult child. ‎ ‎34. For the mother snow leopard in the article, what is her biggest priority? ‎ A. Teach her cubs to look after each other. ‎ B. Help her cubs eat during the extreme weather. ‎ C. Keep her cubs away from other snow leopards. ‎ D. Get used to the pain of separating with her cubs. ‎ ‎35. What makes Born in China a great success?‎ ‎ A. It shows the amazing development of China’s big cities. ‎ ‎ B. It explains in detail how Chinese people get along with wildlife. ‎ ‎ C. It displays the diversity of native landscapes and wildlife in China. ‎ ‎ D. It introduces Chinese animal species that were unknown to the world ‎ 14‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Summer holds many of my strongest and most powerful reading memories.
