So when it comes to home-schooling our daughters, my husband volunteered to teach them science. But at that time he was too busy. I had to teach them instead. One morning, I noticed the sky was a beautiful blue, and the air was filled with the sweet smell of flowers, I decided the lessons would be taught outside. I got the girls ready. We headed up into the forest, setting ourselves by a pond. My elder daughter Saoirse began catching frogs, while my younger daughter Ula looked at me, waiting to be instructed. I handed her a drawing board and the colored pencils. “We wait and see if something comes along. In the meantime, just draw what’s around you.” I told her. Just then a bird flew across the water, and settled in front of a fallen tree. I quickly told Ula, worried that she’d not seen the creature. But she had, and she began drawing it. An hour later, she finished her picture and I found she drew the bird on her paper with amazing accuracy (准确性). But there was one other interesting fact about this drawing: she also drew me, sitting beside her. Staring at this child’s drawing of us watching a bird, I realized how I’d lived for 40 years, gathered 10 years of higher education, and never understood the basis of science before this moment. It is a sense of wonder: it isn’t about accurately reciting words from textbooks. It is first about stepping outside and admiring the world around us. From that day on, it was I not my husband that acted as the science teacher. 24. Which of the following can best describe Ula? A. Patient and careful. B. Wise and stubborn. C. Friendly and outgoing. D. Selfless and hard-working. 25. In the author’s opinion, what is the basis of science? A. Teacher’s instruction. B. Higher education. C. Getting knowledge from textbooks. D. Appreciating the world around. 26. What is the best title for the text? A. An amazing painting B. A lesson on science C. A trip to the forest D. A sense of accuracy C Making beers on the moon might seem like a pipe dream to many, but for a group of students from the University of California at San Diego, there is a chance to take their research beyond Earth’s surface. The Lab2Moon competition, held by TeamIndus, is offering students the chance to secure a spot on the TeamIndus rocket this year. Taking craft beer to the next level, the students want to test whether it’s possible for yeast(酵母) to work and create beer on the moon. However, they believe the experiment is not just a creative concept for astronauts, it’s also important for the development of drugs and yeast-containing food, like bread. “The idea started out with a few laughs among a group of friends,” said Neeki Ashari, a fifth-year bioengineering students at UC San Diego. “We all appreciate the craft beer. When we heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would go up on India’s moonlander, we thought we could combine our hobby with the competition by focusing on the practicality of yeast in outer space.” The preparation work for the beer — up to the stage of adding yeast — will all be done on Earth, and rather than separating the fermentation (发酵) and carbonation stage of making beer, the team plans to combine them. This removes the need to release CO2 accumulated in the process, which may result in cleanliness and safety issues out in space. If selected, Team Original Gravity will be the first to make beer in outer space, and the fermentation will take place in a container no bigger than a soda can. All teams competing for the place will showcase their ideas in Bangalore, India, in March. Sadly, you won’t be enjoying moon beer in your local craft beer bar anytime soon, as no samples will be brought back. However, this small experiment could provide important data on just how practical it is for us to make and create our own resources on other planets and moons by learning how consumables (消耗品) behave in different environments. 27. How did the students feel when they got the chance to design the experiment ? A. Doubtful. B. Nervous. C. Excited. D. Casual. 28. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 6 refer to? A. The preparation work on Earth. B. Adding yeast on Earth. C. The mixing of two stages. D. Fermentation and carbonation. 29. What can we learn about the experiment from the passage? A. Its process was adapted to make it safer and greener. B. It’s quite competitive compared with other designs. C. Its design has already been approved by TeamIndus. D. It has been designed based on similar experiments. 30. What does the author think of the students’ idea? A. It seems like a pipe dream. B. It’s meaningful and hopeful. C. It’s extremely complicated. D. It’s creative but impractical. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s summer time—time once again for mosquitoes to make their appearance. And once they appear, mosquitoes are a total pain. They land on you, bite you, suck out some blood and leave behind an itchy welt(发痒的红肿). 31 Female mosquitoes must find blood in order to reproduce, so mosquitoes come equipped with finely tuned sensors to help them locate the blood they need. Mosquitoes’ weapons Mosquitoes have perfected three different types of sensors. First, mosquitoes can sense several different chemicals. Mosquitoes can smell carbon dioxide and lactic acid(乳酸)up to 100 feet away. 32 Second, mosquitoes have very good eyesight. If you are wearing clothing that contrasts with the background, and if you move while wearing that clothing, mosquitoes can see you. It’s a good bet that anything moving is alive, and therefore full of blood. Finally, mosquitoes come equipped with temperature sensors, so they can find warm-blood mammals and birds very easily. 33 The female mosquito sticks her proboscis(喙)into you. She sucks about five microliters of your blood into her abdomen. After she has bitten you, some saliva(唾液)remains in the wound. 34 The area swells and you itch. Eventually, the swelling goes away, but the itch remains until your immune cells break down the saliva proteins. Our defense methods Because mosquitoes are both a nuisance(讨厌的东西) and a danger, people prefer to stay away from mosquitoes. One way to do that is to use a chemical called DEET, which seems to black a mosquito’s chemical sensors. 35 In some cities there are even trucks that drive around town to spray for mosquitoes. Finally there are traps. The most popular traps turn propane(丙烷) into carbon dioxide and warmth to attract mosquitoes. Over time, by catching large numbers of mosquitoes, these traps can cause the collapse of the mosquito population in the area. A. Another way to control mosquitoes is with insecticides(杀虫剂) that kill them. B. But if you ignore the fact that mosquitoes are so annoying they really are amazing. C. Mammals and birds give off these gases as part of their normal breathing. D. The proteins from the saliva create an immune response from your body. E. Some bites of mosquitoes are more serious than you thought. F. How mosquitoes work is unknown to most of us. G. Once a mosquito lands on you, it is time to bite. Last year I went on holiday to Spain.
