It was after I saw an advertisement in a newspaper looking for people to join a team to ski 350 miles to the North Pole. Back in 1996, there had never been a woman from the U.K. who had accomplished this challenge. I wondered what it would be like to survive in temperatures cold enough to freeze your flesh in seconds, so I sent off for the application form.‎ The application form full of pictures of male explorers arrived. The words “Are you man enough for the ultimate (极端的) challenge?”made me angry and even more determined to get on the team.‎ Over 500 individuals applied for a place in the team, and the selection process included physical and psychological tests designed to pick the best group. In one test, there was a huge rope ladder we had to climb, and I froze at the top because I have a fear of heights. I thought my hopes were fading as most other applicants sailed past, leaving me behind. But two others helped me over, and later I found out that the organizers were not looking for amazing individuals, but great team players, and this moment had shown them who would take care of others in the team. ‎ I had revealed (展示) my weakness, and in a place like the Arctic, you have to be yourself, as there is nowhere to hide. These personalities of asking for help and showing weakness are necessary for women to master.‎ I realized that by being myself, I could succeed. I was selected for the team. I realized that I could achieve more than I ever imagined --- more importantly, by sharing my story with others, I could inspire them to take a step into the new world and reveal more of ‎ their abilities.‎ ‎24. How did the author react on seeing the advertisement?‎ ‎ A. She got cross. B. She was determined.‎ ‎ C. She got frightened. D. She was hesitating.‎ ‎25. What did the organizers view as the most important in the selection?‎ ‎ A. Personal quality. B. Individual ability.‎ ‎ C. Spirit of teamwork. D. Courage to challenge.‎ ‎26. What does the author think of women’s showing weakness?‎ ‎ A. Beneficial. B. Shameful. C. Merciful. D. Disturbing. ‎ ‎27. What’s the intention of the author in writing this passage?‎ ‎ A. To inspire us to prepare for our future goal.‎ ‎ B. To advise women how to turn to others.‎ ‎ C. To make suggestions to her team members. ‎ ‎ D. To encourage people to explore the unknown.‎ C Chinese cuisine is widely known and enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn't long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East-- the ancient custom of “tonic food”.‎ Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one's well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.‎ The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.‎ So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that ‎ this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for. ‎ 28. What is the present situation of tonic food?‎ ‎ A. It is catching less attention. B. It is enjoyed by many young people.‎ ‎ C. It is well-known worldwide. D. It is becoming increasingly popular.‎ 29. What is believed to benefit new mothers?‎ ‎ A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea.‎ ‎ C. Sesame oil hot pot. D. Fish soup.‎ 30. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?‎ ‎ A. Medicine B. Restaurant. C. Manufacture. D. Agriculture.‎ 31. What can be a suitable title for the text?‎ ‎ A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine ‎ B. The Popularity of Tonic Food ‎ C. An Introduction of Chinese Tonic Food ‎ D. Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food D Blue Planet Ⅱ’s latest episode focuses on how plastic is having a devastating effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Researchers recently also found that sea creatures living in the deepest place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastic in their stomachs. Indeed, the oceans are drowning in plastic.‎ Though it seems now that the world couldn’t possibly function without plastics, plastics are a remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s, the same decade that plastic packaging began gaining in popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for instance, is still a very early science. ‎ We put all these plastics into the environment and we still don’t really know what the outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastic in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent. ‎ And it’s not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a disaster, worth mentioning in the same breath as climate change. But ocean plastic is not as complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers (否认者), at least so far. To do something about it, we don’t have to remake our planet ‎ energy system.‎ This is not a problem where we don’t know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage. Anyone can do it. We know how to dispose (处理) of it. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use single-use plastic products. Things that may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag--when taken collectively, these choices really do make a difference.‎ 28. Why is plastics pollution research still a very early science?‎ ‎ A. The plastics pollution research is too difficult.‎ ‎ B. Plastics have produced less pollution than coal.‎ ‎ C. The world couldn’t possibly function without plastics.‎ ‎ D. Plastics have gained in popularity too fast for science to catch up.‎ 29. How did the author support his opinion in Paragraph 3?‎ ‎ A. He presented data.‎ ‎ B. He mentioned remarks from experts.‎ ‎ C. He used examples from his own experience.‎ ‎ D. He used the strategy of comparison and contrast.‎ 30. What can we infer about climate change?‎ ‎ A. Climate change is caused by human activities.‎ ‎ B. Some people cast some doubts on climate change.‎ ‎ C. Climate change is less important than ocean pollution.‎ ‎ D. Ocean plastic is more complicated than climate change.‎ 31. What is the main idea of this passage?‎ ‎ A. Ocean plastic is a global issue.‎ ‎ B. The oceans become choked with plastic.‎ ‎ C. Blue Planet Ⅱ has left viewers heartbroken.‎ ‎ D. Plastics gain in popularity all over the world. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ People often say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and that's actually quite true. 36 After all, making a good first impression is all about making others feel good when spending time with them.
