But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue ‎ toxins at the end of the day.‎ ‎ So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?‎ ‎ Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”‎ ‎ What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated---those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.‎ ‎25. We can infer that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to _______.‎ ‎ A. enjoy their work B. have some good food ‎ C. exercise regularly D. discover fatigue toxins ‎26. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?‎ ‎ A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.‎ ‎ B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work.‎ ‎ C. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.‎ ‎ D. The brain could continue for long without feeling tired.‎ ‎27. According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?‎ ‎ A. Challenging mental work. B. Unpleasant emotions.‎ ‎ C. Endless tasks. D. Physical labor.‎ ‎28. What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ idea?‎ ‎ A. He doubts them. B. He argues against them.‎ ‎ C. He agrees with them. D. He refuses to accept them.‎ C ‎ Wind is the great maker of waves. There are exceptions, such as the tidal(潮汐的) waves sometimes produced by earthquakes under the sea. But the waves most of us know are produced by winds blowing over the sea.‎ ‎ Now before constructing(构建) an imaginary life history of a typical wave, we need to know certain physical things about it. A wave has height, from trough (low point) to crest (high point). It has length-the distance from this crest to that of the following wave. The period of the wave means the time it takes for next crests to pass a fixed point. None of these things stays the same-for all depend upon the wind, upon the depth of the water and many other matters.‎ ‎ The water that makes up a wave does not advance(前进) with it across the sea. Each drop of water turns around in a little circle with the passing of the wave, but returns very nearly to its original(原始的) position. And it is fortunate that this is so. For if the huge masses of water that make up a wave actually moved across the sea, sailing would be impossible.‎ ‎ If we want to find the speed of a wave, we may use the following way: ‎ ‎ Speed = wavelength × frequency ‎ ‎ Here, wavelength is the distance between two high points (crests), frequency means the number of cycles per second.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎29. What causes waves?‎ ‎ A. Earthquakes and nothing else. B. Only wind.‎ ‎ C. Wind causes most waves. D. Wind causes some waves.‎ ‎30. The speed of Wave 1 is 100 cm/s, frequency 10. The frequency of Wave 2 is 300, while its speed is twice that of Wave 1. Which of the following is right?‎ ‎ A. The wavelengths of the two are equal.‎ ‎ B. The wavelength of Wave 1 is 10 times longer than that of Wave 2.‎ ‎ C. The wavelength of Wave 2 is longer than that of Wave 1.‎ ‎ D. The wavelength of Wave 1 is longer than that of Wave 2.‎ ‎31. What do you think benefits(从...中获益) us most in moving across the sea?‎ ‎ A. Water drop almost staying its original position. B. Long wavelength. ‎ ‎ C. Wind speed. D. Wave frequency.‎ ‎32. Which of the following is true according to the passage?‎ ‎ A. The water of a wave moves away across the sea.‎ ‎ B. The water of a wave remains almost at the same place.‎ ‎ C. The water of a wave goes with the passing of the wave.‎ D. The length of a wave means the distance from the top of a wave to the bottom.‎ D WASHINGTON—Thousands of public schools stopped teaching foreign languages in the last decade, according to a survey. But another contrary trend has educators and policy makers abuzz: a rush by schools in all parts of America to offer instructions in Chinese. Some schools are paying for Chinese classes on their own, but hundreds are getting some help. The Chinese government is sending teachers from China to schools all over the world—and paying part of their salaries. No one keeps an exact count, but rough calculations based on the government's survey suggest that perhaps 1,600 American public and private schools are teaching Chinese, up from 300 or so a decade ago. And the number is growing vastly. “It's really changing the language education situation of this country,” said Nancy C. Rhodes, director at the center. Other signs point to the same trend. “The number of students taking the Advanced Placement test in Chinese, introduced in 2007, has grown so fast that it is likely to pass German this year as the third most-tested A.P. language, after Spanish and French”, said Trevor Packer, vice president at the College Board. “We've all been surprised that in such a short time Chinese would grow to surpass A.P. German,” Mr. Packer said.‎ ‎ A decade ago, most of the schools with Chinese programs were on the East and West Coasts. But in recent years, many schools have started Chinese programs in heartland states, including Ohio and Illinois in the Midwest, Texas and Georgia in the South, and Colorado and Utah in the Rocky Mountain West. America has had the study of a foreign language grow before, only to see the bubble burst. Many schools began teaching Japanese in the 1980s, after Japan appeared as an economic power. But thousands have dropped the language, the survey found. Japanese is not the only language that has declined(衰退). Thousands of schools that offered French, German or Russian have stopped teaching those languages, too, the survey found. ‎ ‎33. Cause people to discuss something hotly.            D. Cause people to march bravely. ‎ ‎34. What can we infer from what Mr. Packer said? ‎ A. More and more people choose Chinese in A.P. test.  ‎ B. A.P. test is the most difficult one in the world. ‎ C. Chinese is more important than Spanish and French.              ‎ D. Chinese is a necessary subject in most important tests. ‎ ‎35. What is the main idea of the passage? ‎ A. Chinese is being learned as an official language in America.‎ B. Foreign Languages fade in American schools except Chinese. ‎ C. Teaching Chinese in foreign countries has become a trend. ‎ D.
