‎ A Tabloids (小报) are newspapers that usually report news about people. However, the stories often leave readers wondering, “Could this really be true?” Read the following stories from the hottest tabloids in town.‎ Brasilia, Brazil After Gilberto Carvalho — a million-dollar lottery (彩票) winner — told reporters that his luck had come from a particular fish in a park pond, more than 200 other Brazilians spoke up with similar stories. They had touched this fish and soon after had won a prize! Although this “magic fish” is being studied and off-limits to the public, many people have won money simply by touching its picture.‎ Cleveland‎, Ohio, ‎U.S.‎‎ Bruce Zalmer, 32, is fireproof. His skin can withstand (禁得住) flames without pain or damage. And his lungs (肺) can take in oxygen from smoky air. Medical scientists are amazed that a human could have either of these qualities, let alone both. Although Zalmer sees himself as “just a regular guy”, he once saved a family of four from a burning building after firefighters had given up hope.‎ Nakuru‎, ‎Kenya‎ As tourists in a bus looked on in amazement, a spaceship caught 11 elephants from a wildlife park. The bus driver had stopped at a watering hole and the tourists were watching the elephants when a huge spaceship appeared. The ship shot down a powerful beam of orange light that sucked up (吸走) the elephants and then flew off. Park officials confirmed that 11 full-grown elephants had disappeared.‎ Monterrey, Mexico Doctors say that hundreds of people who had been old and sick became young and healthy again by drinking from a water fountain  (喷泉) in a public park. Park officials removed the fountain because crowds were becoming a ‎ danger. Yet the people who had drunk its water remained young and healthy — and made others young and healthy, too, simply by hugging them!‎ ‎21. In Brasilia, it's said that there is a magic fish that _____.‎ A. brings people good luck B. knows how to win prizes C. can communicate with humans D. can recognize different types of money ‎22. Which of the following can best describe Bruce Zalmer?‎ A. Smart.          B. Brave. C. Dangerous.       D. Far-sighted.‎ ‎23. All the stories mentioned in the text are _____.‎ A. reasonable         B. frightening C. encouraging       D. unbelievable ‎ ‎ B ‎       Recently we talked with Diane Lucas of Scrapsforever.com about scrapbooking (剪贴薄制作).‎ ‎       What is scrapbooking exactly?‎ ‎       When I make a scrapbook page, I take a few of my family photos and put them into a page that uses beautiful paper, stickers, drawings, and words to show the theme. For example, this page about my son is called “First Day at School”. Here's a photo of him and one of his drawings, and I decorated it with stickers. When you make a scrapbook, you can put words and pictures together to show the important times in your life. It's like a personal history.‎ ‎       How did you get started?‎ ‎       When I was a child, I always saved bits of paper, things like movie tickets and vacation postcards. I made my first scrapbook ten years ago, when my father died. When I looked through his desk, I found the most wonderful things — like my parents' anniversary (周年纪念) cards, and photos from his army days. I couldn't throw away anything, so I made two scrapbooks with my collections, for my brother and me.‎ ‎       Do you know other people who make scrapbooks?‎ ‎       Oh, yes! We call ourselves “scrappers”, and we often have “crops”, big parties where we all work on our scrapbooks. We bring our scissors and papers and our boxes of photos, and we talk while making new pages. It's a time for enjoyment, when friends show pictures and tell stories about our families, and our lives. At the same time, we create a book to keep those memories.‎ ‎       Why is scrapbooking so popular these days?‎ ‎       I think people want to record their family history, and show it to other people. When you make a scrapbook, you can pass the stories on to your children, and your grandchildren. So many people today want to do that! We all have boxes of pictures, and we all want to keep those memories. That's the real meaning of scrapbooking.‎ ‎24. Scrapbooking requires that the scrappers have _____.‎ A. a bit of creativity B. good handwriting C. rich life experiences D. a wide knowledge of history ‎25. Diane Lucas made her first scrapbook _____.‎ A. in honor of her father B. when serving in the army C. with the help of her brother D. under the influence of her parents ‎26. What does Diane Lucas think of the “crops”?‎ A. They're hard to hold. B. They're very interesting.‎ C. They're quite competitive. D. They're full of challenges.‎ ‎27. In Diane Lucas' mind, scrapbooking is a good way to _____.‎ A. make friends       B. rewrite history C. educate children                      D. share people's stories C People who realize and master the art of small talk can use it to improve relationships. Small talk can lead to “big” talk — more important discussions. Using small talk, you can achieve big results. But many people do have fears that hold them back from making small talk. ‎ For one thing, those who refuse to make small talk usually fear the unknown. When I was little, my mom said, “Don't talk to strangers!” For some people, that childhood fear of strangers continues into adulthood.‎ Suppose you are at a business networking event and have checked out who is there and found potential (潜在的) conversation partners. You're ready to make your move, but there are butterflies in your stomach. You are too frightened to introduce yourself to total strangers.‎ Consider a different situation for the next networking event you attend. To overcome your nervousness, you can think of yourself as an event's host and not its guest. As a host, you would introduce yourself to people you don't know and introduce them to others. You can play the role of the host even though you are not the actual host. Get in the habit of holding out your hand first and saying, “Hi, my name is ...”‎ Another reason why people refuse to open their mouth is the fear of rejection. Anytime you open your mouth and speak, you risk rejection. If you never talk to people, you won't be rejected. But if you never talk to people, you will also be very lonely. The best way I've found to overcome the fear of rejection is to focus on how I feel when I am accepted. ‎ So ask yourself: what do I have to lose? Nothing! What do I have to gain? Possibly everything! Think back to when you first met your best friend or any important person in your life. How did it all start? You probably started with small talk.‎ ‎28. In Paragraph 1, the author wants to tell us that small talk is _____.‎ A. worth doing                     B. hard to make C. often ignored                   D. very interesting ‎29. The underlined part “there are butterflies in your stomach” probably means you are _____.‎ A. busy        B. nervous C. confident                    D. excited              ‎ ‎30. When you are at a business networking event, you are advised to _____.‎ A. talk with the host            B. behave yourself C. try to be helpful             D. play an active role ‎31. What's the purpose of the text?‎ A. To advise.      B. To discuss. C. To describe.       D. To introduce.‎ ‎ ‎ D This Sunday, the 88th Academy Awards (or Oscars) will be hosted at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The Academy Awards are designed to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements. Among the hundreds of films produced each year, only twenty-four of the awards are presented. Even so, those who are even considered for an Academy are revered.‎ Currently, several films are nominated (提名) for the Best Motion Picture title. Last year, director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance beat eight other films to win the honor. Now, Iñárritu hopes to secure the award once again with The Revenant. Set in the 1820s, The Revenant is a historical film that follows a team of trappers under the command of Captain Andrew Henry. The plot is well developed, and is fueled by betrayal and vengeance (背叛和复仇). The special effects, including the actors’ costumes and makeup, are especially attractive; at one point in the movie, when the main character, Glass, is attacked and torn by a bear, his injuries seem completely lifelike. For me, Iñárritu’s efforts to achieve perfection are clear. From capturing (拍摄) the frightening experiences of Glass to carefully timing the killing of Glass’s enemy, The Revenant is a major competitor for the award.‎ For me, another front runner in the competition is Steven Spielberg’s Bridge‎ of ‎Spies, which stars Tom Hanks as the 20th century James B. Donovan. In the film, fifteen time Oscar nominated director captures the difficulties Donovan faced as a criminal defendant (刑事被告) during the Cold War. Clearly, these directors express life’s greatest philosophies to their audience ‎ through this art. They try to inspire viewers and present them invaluable life experiences that ordinary people may never go through. Lastly, what makes these works so great, in my opinion, is what they teach; by observing how others overcome difficulties, we are able to face our own struggles and go after greatness. ‎ All in all, I am often amazed by the pictures produced in Hollywood; every year, the productions take people’s attention away from the previous year’s works. With even more advanced technology and set design, I hope the art of cinematography continues in future years and that the Academy continues to honor the best films of all time. ‎ ‎32. The underlined word “revered” in Paragraph 1 can best be replaced by _____.‎ A. noticed    B. followed     C. admired  D. supported ‎ ‎33. In the author’s opinion, The Revenant _____.‎ A. is the best historical film B. enjoys obvious advantages    ‎ C. beats Birdman in many ways D. is sure to win Best Motion Picture ‎34. What do The Revenant and Bridge of Spies have in common?‎ A. Both of the main characters suffer a lot.‎ B. Both directors are aiming for perfection.‎ C. Both are telling the story of ordinary people.‎ D. Both of the stories happen in the 19th century.‎ ‎35. In the last paragraph, the author expresses her _____.‎ A. thanks    B. wishes      C. support   D. satisfaction ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How to grow houseplants Have you ever killed a beautiful houseplant? Are you still killing beautiful houseplants?  36  Well, look no further, just follow these step-by-step instructions and your plant killing days will be over.‎ First of all, buy an easy-to-grow plant that can survive you. If you need a desert cactus (仙人掌) for a starter plant, then that's fine.  37  ‎ Next, make sure your plant gets enough sunlight.  38  The window will act as a prism (棱镜) and fry your plant. What you want to do is have a window with a light curtain. It should be transparent (透明的). In that way your plant gets its needed sunlight but it won't be destroyed.‎ ‎ 39  If you give it the amount of water for a different plant, you could over-water or under-water it. If you know that everything needs water to survive, that's great, but you must also know that if you give something too much water you will kill it. Same thing goes for plants. ‎ Finally, you will want to prune (修剪) your plant weekly. If you don't, then the plant might become unhealthy or unattractive, and sometimes even both. You could use tools or your hands.  40  This makes for a great fertilizer, too, and then you won't have to buy fertilizer at the store!‎ A. Not everyone has a gift for growing plants.‎ B. However, never place it next to a glass window.‎ C. Are you looking for a way to solve your problem?‎ D. Water your plant as instructed for that specific plant.‎ E. Does it prefer bright light and ordinary room temperatures?‎ F. Just make sure you have a plant that you know you can take care of.‎ G. When you remove the dead leaves from your plant, put them in the soil. ‎ When our first son Brendan was born in Sydney in 1966, we planted a golden elm tree in our front yard.
