He thought about what to write. He recalled that the competition deadline was merely a week away. But he still had not even started on his piece. He looked at the brochure again. “WRITING COMPETITION!” the title read. His mom had encouraged him to enter the writing competition, and now he was taking it on as his personal task for the holidays. As the boy reflected on his previous writing efforts, he realized how hopeless his task of winning was. Every story he ever wrote was based on other stories. He had little imagination, and unfortunately, imagination was the key to writing. Suddenly, he had a brainwave. This time, he came up with an original and imaginative story. The words shot towards him like a storm of leaves. Words were coming easily, flowing through him, faster than he could type. He typed faster than he ever had before. He continued to type, amazed how easy writing this story was. The boy could not stop writing. He looked at the word count and saw the number “248” staring right back at him. He was not even halfway yet. Then he heard his mother’s call of saying time for bed. He continued writing the piece, ignoring her. He had to make up for the time he had lost in thinking about a topic to write. Finally, he finished. The word count now read “498”. “Perfect,” he thought, “just under the word limit.” He knew this was the story that would win. He went to the website and searched for the competition. He found the page but there was no “Enter” button. Confused he then reread the page again. It read COMPETITION CLOSED. 4. What caused the boy to take part in the writing competition? A. A new computer. B. The prize money. C. His own interest. D. His mom’s encouragement. 5. How did the boy finish his earlier writing? A. His mom helped him. B. He copied others’ ideas. C. His friends assisted him. D. He used his imagination. 6. Why did the boy delay his writing? A. Because he was terribly lazy. B. Because he didn’t know what to write. C. Because he wasn’t confident. D. Because he read too many stories. 7. Which might be the maximum word limit for each entry? A. 100. B. 250. C. 500. D. 1000. 【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7. They survive by means of their collective intelligence. Their decision-making power is distributed throughout the group; that is, no one ant or bee makes decisions for the group. Instead, they work together. As Deborah M. Gordon, a biologist of Stanford University, says, “Ants aren’t smart. Ant colonies are.” The same is true for bee colonies. Although bees and ants are quite different physically, they have a lot in common in terms of their behavior. Specifically, honeybees and ants have similar roles within the colony, both have communication systems, and both have the capacity of learning. Ants communicate by using chemicals called pheromones, which can alert others to danger or to a food source. For example, when worker ants find a promising source, they let the rest of colony know how to find it by leaving a trail of pheromones on the way back to the colony. The other ants pick up the message using their sense of smell. Bees, on the other hand, use movement to communicate with each other. Worker bees send message to each other by means of a “dance”. Different speeds and movements send different messages. For example, when worker bees called scouts go out to find a new hoe for the colony, they return and do a dance for the other worker bees that indicates the location of the new home and how suitable it is. The faster the scouts dance the better the new location is. Honeybees and ants are both capable of learning. One Chinese study found that bees can be trained to learn and remember a route to a food source. The researchers also found that bees can be taught to recognize hidden objects and use the concepts of “sameness” and “difference” to accomplish certain tasks. Ants take this one step further. Recent America research has shown that ants not only have the ability to learn, but also can teach their foraging skills to other younger ants. They observed that older ants accompany young ants in search of food and teach them the route and how to avoid obstacles. As we can see, the social behavior of honeybees and ants is quite similar. Both coordinate complex actions and accomplish crucial survival tasks by cooperating in groups consisting of many individuals. Unintelligent as they may be as individuals, as groups they often show amazing brilliance as they go about their everyday activities. 8 What do ants and bees have in common? A. They make use of collective intelligence. B. They live in similar-sized colonies. C. They have small leadership groups that make all decisions. D. They use the same method to communicate with each other. 9. What docs the speed of a bee’s dance indicate? A. The distance to a neighboring colony. B. The quality of a new colony location. C. The discovery of a new food source. D. The direction to a potential food source. 10. In paragraph 3, how docs the author demonstrate the idea that Honeybees and ants are both capable of learning? A. By using statistics. B. By explaining reason. C. By presenting study findings. D. By stating opinions. 11. What does the underlined part “foraging skills” refer to in the third Paragraph? A. The skills of communicating. B. The skills of sacking food. C. The skills of leaning. D. The skills of finding a new home. 【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. Unexpectedly, Huang, 31, found that words like “poverty” and “safari” – negative words that were often associated with the continent in media reports – were the kind of terms her African classmates didn’t want to hear. Instead, they preferred to hear the question answered in this way: “Africa is the cradle of humankind” and “Africans are passionate and generous”. Apparently, there are some misunderstandings between us. It’s true that with incidents like the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa and the emergence (出现) of pirates off the coast of Somalia hitting the news, it’s easy for us to keep forgetting that Africa has one of the world’s oldest civilizations – Egypt, born by the world’s longest river, the Nile. The proof is in the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza, which are both popular among tourists. And the tombs of ancient Egypt have also become endless sources for the literature and film industries. When it comes to the natural environment of Africa, our misunderstandings are only bigger. But the truth is that instead of being extremely hot all year and covered by desert, the continent has large areas of savannas (稀树草原) where lions, giraffes and zebras live, the snowcapped Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa – and even thick forest on the island of Madagascar. These misunderstandings are one of the reasons why the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was held on Sept 3 and 4 – to understand each other better. Indeed, only by visiting Africa herself did Huang see the convenient living conditions, the amazing natural beauty and the friendly people. In her eyes, her classmates were as hopeful about the future of their own countries as they were about Africa as a whole, and they were quick to demonstrate both their strong will and activity. “At that moment, I knew exactly what they wanted – they wanted their culture to be respected.” 12. Which of the following best explains “cradle” underlined in paragraph 2? A. A small bed for babies. B. A basket to hold something. C. A place for people to relax themselves. D. A place where something important began. 13. What can we infer about Africa according to the passage? A. It is very hot all the year round. B. It’s not a safe continent to live in C. It’s different from what we imagine. D. It is bound to have a bright future 14. Which of the following would Huang agree with? A. To see is to believe B. Think twice before you do C. A miss is as good as a mile D. Don’t judge a person by his appearance 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Valuing a Culture. B. Understanding Africa. C. Paying a Visit to Africa. D.
