The book tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked(遭遇海难的). He spends 28 years on an island near Venezuela. The book tells the story of everything that happens to Robinson Crusoe. He hopes someone will rescue him, but he has been there for so long on his own that he also begins to fear being rescued. Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. Most experts believe the story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was a Scottish sailor. On an expedition(探 险) in 1704, Selkirk had an argument with his ship's captain. 3 ship was not safe and was about to fall apart. When the ship stopped at a remote island to get fresh water, Selkirk got off. He tried to get the other crew members to leave with him, but nobody would. The ship then sailed away without him. Selkirk spent four years and four months on his own on the island, known as Aguas Buenas. Selkirk was finally rescued by a ship that visited the island in 1709. The ship's captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived. Now archaeologists think they have found the remains of Selkirk's camp on Aguas Buenas. They found two deep holes that would have held wooden posts. The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island. The most interesting evidence, the archaeologists say, is part of a piece of equipment used by sailors to navigate(导航). Historians believe Selkirk was a navigator, so the instrument could have belonged to him. Robinson Crusoe was published ten years after Selkirk was rescued. Most experts think Daniel Defoe heard and read stories about Selkirk, which inspired him to write the book. 1. Why did Selkirk choose to land on the remote island? A. Because he had quarrels with the crew members. B. Because the captain ordered him to get fresh water. C. Because he wanted to go on an adventure there. D. Because he thought the ship he was on was in danger. 根据第二段的最后一句“Selkirk thought the ship was not safe and was about to fall apart”可知,Selkirk 认为他乘坐的船不安全,所 以就中途下了船,来到了一个偏远的小岛上。 2. We can infer from the text that the ship that visited Aguas Buenas in 1709 ________. A. lost its way while sailing B. lacked fresh water upon arrival C. was being navigated by Selkirk D. was running out of food upon arrival 答案与解析:D 考查推理判断。根据第四段的第二句“The ship's captain was grateful to Selkirk because he provided food for the crew when they arrived”可 推知,1709 年来到 Aguas Buenas 的这艘船缺食物,所以对 Selkirk 提供食物很是感激。 3. How could Selkirk see ships that might rescue him, according to archaeologists? A. By asking the crew members on the ships. B. By sending messages to the ships' captains. C. By watching from his shelter high on the island. D. By using a piece of equipment used to navigate. 根据第五段中的“The archaeologists say this is evidence that Selkirk built a shelter there. The post holes are near a fresh water stream. They are located quite high up, which would have meant that Selkirk was able to watch out for the ships coming close to the island”可知,考古学家认为 Selkirk 通过建在高处的居所来观察经过的船只。 4. The author wrote the text to ________. A. explain the origin of Robinson Crusoe B. promote sales of Robinson Crusoe 4 C. criticise Alexander Selkirk's deeds D. praise Daniel Defoe for his writing inspiration 答案与解析:A 考查写作意图。 B (2017·山西联考)Three years ago a flash of lightning almost destroyed Lyn Diana's house in Aberdeen—with her two children inside. “There was a huge rainstorm,”she says, recalling the terrifying experience.“My brother and I were outside making every effort to stop floodwater from coming in the house. Suddenly I was thrown to the ground by a very large bang. When I picked myself up, the roof and the whole upper storey of the house had been destroyed. The door was blocked by broken bricks, but we forced our way in and found the children, thankfully unharmed.Later I was told that to be struck by lightning is a chance in a million.” In fact, it's calculated at one chance in 600,000.Even so, Dr. Mark Keys of AER Technology, an organization that monitors the effects of lightning, thinks you should be careful. He advises anyone who is unlucky enough to be caught in a storm to get down on the ground and bend into a ball, making yourself as small as possible. Nancy Wilder was playing golf at a club in Surrey when she was hit by a flash of lightning.Mrs.Wilder's heart stopped beating, but she was brought back to consciousness and, after a few days in hospital, where she was treated for burns to her head, hands and feet, she was pronounced fit again. Since that time, she has been a completely fairweather golfer. In fact, a golf course is one of the most dangerous places during a thunderstorm. The best place to be is inside a car! Harold Deal, a retired electrician from South Carolina, USA, was struck by lightning 26 years ago. He seemed to be unhurt, but it later turned out that the strike had damaged the part of the brain which controls the sensation of temperature.Since then the freezing South Carolina winters haven't bothered Harold. 5.What damage did the rainstorm cause to Mrs.Diana's family? A.Her house was flooded and fell down. B.Her children were seriously ill and hurt. C.The top storey of her house was completely destroyed. D.The door in the house was broken by a very large bang. 根据第一段中的“the roof and the whole upper storey of the house had been destroyed. The door was blocked by broken bricks, but we forced our way in and found the children, thankfully unharmed”可知,C 项正确。 6.What did Mrs.Wilder do after surviving the lightning strike? A.She played golf only on fine days. B.She never played golf again. C.She often went to see a doctor. D.She never took any medicine. 根据第二段中的“Since that time, she has been a completely fairweather golfer”可知,从那时起,她只在晴天打高尔夫球。故选 A。 7.What do we know about Harold Deal from the last paragraph? A.The lightning strike did not do any harm to him. B.The lightning strike burnt his hair and skin terribly. C.He suffered a lot from the freezing cold in South Carolina. D.He wasn't sensitive to temperature after the lightning strike. 根据最后一段的“He seemed to be unhurt... bothered Harold”可推知,雷电事件之后,Harold 对温度不再敏感。故选 D。 8.What can we conclude from the passage? 5 A.It happens quite often that lightning strikes people during a storm. B.During a thunderstorm you are safer in your house than in your car. C.During a thunderstorm it is the safest for you to stay under a big round ball. D.If you are caught in a storm, you should get down on the ground. 根据第一段中的“He advises anyone who is unlucky enough to be caught in a storm to get down on the ground and bend into a ball, making yourself as small as possible”可知,Mark 建议,如果不幸遇到暴风雨,要趴在地上, 蜷成球状,使自己的身体尽可能地缩小。 How do you stay true to yourself when you're surrounded by friends and/or family that have an opinion on everything you do? Own the choices you make in your life. __12__When you believe in yourself, in time, others will believe in you too. Focus on your own talents and strengths. B. Never let others' opinions guide your choices. C. Treat every person like they are important. D. When you doubt yourself, others will doubt you. E. Stay fearless in everything you will have to do. F. Be thankful to life and be helpful to others, and you'll lead a successful life. G. However, there are great possibilities that you can lead the life you really want. Mr. Johnson is a hardworking teacher.
