I wanted to get experience for what I thought would be my future job. However,on one particular Saturday morning I learnt something perhaps more important. The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer parts of the city and some people could only pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday,a man and his young son,who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box. There was something wrong with the cat’s left eye. But the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine. He kept quiet for a while, and then he asked where the nearest animal shelter was. Hearing this, his son cried and started to argue with him. All of a sudden,an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up,walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for the cost. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat. I always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but I only saw people do acts of kindness on TV or in movies. What the woman did made me believe that these things do happen in real life, and quite often. Now,when I can’t decide whether to help someone who is in need,I remember this woman, and then I have the courage to step up to the plate. Sometimes other people follow. 24.We can infer that a vet’s is most probably a hospital for . A.kids B.the poor C.animals D.women 25.For what purpose did the writer work at the vet’s? A.Take it home without treatment. B.Give it to someone on the street. C.Give it to the woman. D.Give it up. 27.We can learn from this passage that . A.the man doesn’t like keeping a cat B.the older woman often helps people out C.the man’s son didn’t agree to the man’s first decision D.the hospital often asks for too much money C. Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine (缝纫机)but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread(线)to run smoothly around the needle. Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practiced sewing machine. Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre. To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”. 28. According to the passage, Elias Howe was________. A. the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleep B. much more hard-working than other inventors C. the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked D. the only person at the time who knew the value of dreams 29. The problem Howe was trying to solve was________. A. what kind of thread to use B. how to design a needle which would not break C. where to put the needle D. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle 30. Thomas Edison is spoken of because________. A. he also tried to invent a sewing machine B. he got some of his ideas from dreams C. he was one of Howe’s best friends D. he also had difficulty in falling asleep 31. Dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves” because ________. A. strange images are used to communicate ideas B. images which have no meaning are used C. we can never understand the real meaning D. only specially trained people can understand them D. A man came home from work late, tired, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door. “Daddy, how much money do you make each hour?” “If you must know, I make $20 each hour.” “Oh,” the little boy answered, with his head down. He thought for a moment, looked up and said, “Daddy, could you lend me $10?” The father was furious, “If you asked for the money to buy a toy or some other rubbish, go straight to your room and think about why you areso selfish (自私)!” The little boy went to his room with no words and shut the door. After a short while, the father calmed (平静) down, and started to think, “Maybe he really needs to buy something and he didn’t really ask for money very often.” So he went to the little boy’s room. “Sorry!Maybe I was too hard on you just now.” said the man, “Here’s $10.” “Oh, thank you Daddy!” he said happily. Then the boy took out some coins. When the father found that the boy already had money, he got angry again. “Why do you want more money since you already have some?” the father shouted angrily. “Because I didn't have enough, but now I do.” The little boy replied, “Daddy, I have $20 now. Can I buy one hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you. ” 32. In this passage, the underlined word “furious” means ______. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to use one. 36 They find that the phones are more than a means of communication – having mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected. The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity(负面报道)of such ideas. 37 On the other hand, signs of change in the issues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss. 38 This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. 39 The answer is radiation(辐射). High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about the safety continues, it appears that it’s best to use mobile phones less often. 40 Use your mobile phone only when you really need it.
