His drawings --- often drawn from memory and at great speed --- are sketched(素描) on the spot at street level. Stephen, who was born in London in 1974, didn't say a word as a small child, and found it hard to relate to other people. At the age of five, Stephen was sent to Queensmill School, London, where it soon became apparent(显然的) that he communicated through the language of drawing. His teachers encouraged him to speak by taking away his art materials for a short time; eventually he said his first words --- "paper" and "pencil" --- but didn't learn to speak fully until the age of nine. Stephen loved drawing and he was seldom to be found without pen and paper. Once he took part in art competitions, news of his great talent began to spread. Early fans included the late Prime Minister Edward Heath who bought his drawing of Salisbury Cathedral, made when Stephen was just eight. But Stephen came to wider public attention when the BBC featured him in the programme, "The Foolish Wise Ones" in 1987, when he was introduced by Sir Hugh Casson (a past president of the Royal Academy), as "the best child artist in Britain". After that, Stephen's reputation(名声) grew worldwide. A second BBC documentary in 2001 showed Stephen flying over London in a helicopter and later completing a detailed drawing of London within three hours, which included 12 historic landmarks(地标性建筑)and 200 other structures. In 2006 Stephen was recognised for his services to the art world, when he was made a member of the Order of the British Empire. Today wherever Stephen goes, people are attracted by his outstanding talent(才干). 4. What problem did Stephen have when he was a small child? A. No schools wanted him. B. No teachers liked him. C. A. a novel B. a biography C. an official report D. a history paper C Believe it or not, we all have an inner-child living inside of us. One of the greatest problems is people’s desire to silence the inner-child. Instead, welcoming this voice to the conversation can be very beneficial and help you in many areas of your life. Why is it so important to listen to your inner child? Do you remember you wanted to be an adult more than anything else when you were young? But now you’re an adult, and do you ever find yourself thinking, “I wish I were a kid again?” That’s where your inner-child comes in. That’s the voice inside of you telling you to have fun, be silly and let loose. Adult life is full of important responsibilities, but once in a while you just have to let go and have fun like a child. It’s healthy and good for the soul to not take things so seriously all the time. We can tell bad choices and mistakes of the past, but unless you help your inner-child heal and recover, planning for the future will always be difficult. The inner-child will relive these painful experiences until you learn to accept them, forgive and let go. We must show love and acceptance to our inner-child, as this is the only way to heal, move on and not continue to suffer from the pain of these unpleasant times. This is the opportunity to go back in time and let you know just how wonderful, beautiful and special you truly are. One of the most common times your inner-child is likely to appear is when you’re facing a decision you are unsure about. Naturally, when we were children, doubt and uncertainty scared many of us. So, it’s no surprise that when faced with these moments as adults, the inner-child decides to show up. Don’t let this scare you; instead, listen to that voice as it is trying to guide you in the decision-making process. Ask it questions, speak with it. When you can start to see your inner-child as your partner who helps guide you through this crazy life, it’s amazing what can happen. Don’t fight it. Go with it and see how it changes your life for the better. 8. What do people usually do to the inner-child? A. Stop it. B. Welcome it. C. Rescue it. D. Blame it. 9. Why is it always hard to plan for the future? A. We have no fun in our life. B. We always make bad choices. C. We don’t help inner-child recover. D. We always experience unhappy times. 10. When will inner-child probably come up? A. When we make decisions. B. When we enjoy ourselves. C. When we make mistakes. D. When we feel unpleasant. 11. What may happen if we accept inner-child? A. We may feel more painful. B. We will make more mistakes. C. We will take things more seriously. D. We may have a better life. D When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends ask me how I can stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kind of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life. It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi is the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead. When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, others chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living. Once I got to the park, I picked a bench over near the play area where kids play while their parents sit nearby. I can see and hear almost everything from there. People-watching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there’s so much to see and hear in the park! Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men’s conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn’t hear the rest, but it must have been hilarious because his friend’s laugh was so loud. When I’m old, I hope that I too will have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do. 12. Some of the author’s friends think“the sounds of life”are very_____. A. magical B. unique C. unpleasant D. interesting 13. The author took the bus to the park because________. A. it was the most convenient way B. his friend advised him to do so C. there was no other transport to go there D. he wanted to see more about people’s life 14. The author closed his eyes in order to________. A. avoid talking with the two old men B. enjoy the sounds of life C. hide himself from view D. have a good rest 15. The underlined word“hilarious”in Paragraph 5 probably means“________”. A. quite popular B. truly different C. extremely funny D. rather strange 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Be a Green Child What does it mean to be green? “Green” is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. Why green? Plants are green, and without them the Earth wouldn’t be such a lovely home for us human beings. What can we do? 16 Reduce It! 17 For instance, a shorter shower means you used less water and less fuel since your house uses to run the heater that warmed up the water. Reuse It! Sometimes people call ours a “throwaway society”. It means that we’re a little too willing to throw away old stuff (东西) and buy new stuff. 18 For instance, if your baby brother becomes older and loses interest in his plastic basketball hoop (篮圈), why not give it to another family who has a little kid? Recycle It! Recycling has never been easier. Many communities will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require it. Recycled goods go to a recycling center, where they can be turned into new cans, bottles, and paper. Enjoy It! It’s true that rubbish and pollution are problems, but the Earth remains a huge and beautiful place that’s ready for you to explore. 19 Go for a hike, visit local nature centers and gardens, and climb up mountains. But before you travel the globe, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a spot where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? 20 A. Here’s a four-step guide to being green. B. Many times, even if you no longer need something, someone else just might. C. You can start locally by visiting the naturally beautiful spots in your city. D. Turn off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. E. Get out there and get your hands dirty. F. You can watch with pride as your tree takes root and your garden plants grow. G. When you use less of something, you do a good thing for the Earth 第二部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) “A bird with broken wing will never fly as high.” I’m sure that John would agree with this saying,____21____ he felt this way almost every day in school. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.” The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again gave the price. The man didn’t have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; Paragraph 1 Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【参考答案】 1---3 C BB 4---7 CBDB 8---11 ACAD 12---15 CDBC 16---20 AGBCF 21---25 CBADB 26---30 ADCDB 31---35 DADAC 36. looking 37. plants 38. more valuable 39. immediately 40. feeds 41. that 42. had been used 43. however 44. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir. This fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lips shaking and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.” Paragraph 2 That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn’t go to the circus that night. When I asked Dad why he did so, Dad said, “My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while, as if wandering in his memory. “We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without.”查看更多
