B I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled(贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, "Take your shoes away! Why under my bed! "Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled(爬) under her covers, crying. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy(同情) rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got into my work that I even didn't notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression was such disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, "Thanks." Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn't always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on. 24. What made Kate so angry one evening? A. She couldn't find her books. B. She heard the author shouting loud. C. She got the news that her grandma was ill. D. She saw the author's shoes beneath her bed. 25. My Friend Kate B. Hard Work Pays Off C. How to Be Organized D. Learning to Be Roommates C Children who spend more time outdoor may have a lower risk of becoming near-sighted, new research suggests. In the study, researchers looked at about 1,900 schoolchildren in China. The scientists found that the kids who had been instructed to spend more time outdoors over three years were 23 percent less likely to develop near-sightedness during this time than those who had not been instructed to spend more time outdoors. Moreover, among the kids who did become near-sighted during the study, the degree to which their eyesight worsened was slightly smaller among those who spent more time outdoors. In the study, the researchers selected six schools and required the children, whose average age was 7 at the start of the study, to attend one additional 60-minute class of outdoor activities during each school day for three years. The parents of these children were also encouraged to engage (使参加) their children in outdoor activities after school, especially during weekends and holidays. The other half of the children, from another six schools, continued their usual activity patterns. After three years, 30.4 percent of the kids in the intervention (干预) group had become near-sighted, compared with 38.5 percent of the kids in the control group, the researchers found. The reduction in the risk of near-sightedness found in the study is important, because children who develop near-sightedness at a young age are most likely to develop worse myopia (the medical term for near-sightedness) later on, the researchers said. It is not clear exactly why spending more time outside would benefit children's eyesight. However, some research has suggested that the higher levels of light intensity found outdoors may increase the release of the chemical dopamine from the retina (视网膜) of the eye, which is beneficial to eyesight. In turn, dopamine is known to inhibit the type of growth in the eye that is associated with myopia. Based on the new results, the researchers recommend that children spend more time outdoors because of the potential benefits to their eyesight. However, it's important to protect kids' skin and eyes from UV light, which can be damaging. 28. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Parents should engage children in outdoor activities. B. Kids who often play outside may have better eyesight. C. Kids are unlikely to gain weight if they usually play outdoors. D. Recently researchers have discovered a cure to near-sightedness. 29. How many schools are involved in the study in total? A. 3 B. 6 C. 9 D. 12 30. The underlined word "inhibit" in the last but one paragraph means__________. A. prevent B. cause C. encourage D. preserve 31. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. About 1,900 seven-year-old schoolchildren have participated in the study. B. Parents of the children in the control group were also involved in the study. C. When playing outside, children should protect their skin and eyes from the sun. D. Based on the results, scientists found out why staying outside benefits eyesight. D Students decide to take a job while being in university because of two reasons: on the one hand, they need money; on the other hand, they want to experience something new and they want to see what working means. It is a good opportunity to know about the society and realize the importance of co-working with others. But is it good to take a job while you are a university student? If we were to think about the advantages we could mention the ones I have just discussed. Having a job from an early age helps us gain experience, which will be very useful to our late life. We may become financially independent and don't need to ask our parents for money each time we want to go downtown with our friends, or spend the holiday at the seaside or in the mountains. However, students who take a job might have problems in spending enough time on their study. If they work during the day, they may have to be absent from their classes, and if they work at night they will feel tired the next day. They may choose to stay at home, resting. What's worse, some students may even get bored with studying. Well, this fact happens every now and then, but there are cases when well-prepared students take a part-time job but at the same time they make time for studying, too. And they have good results. Their case is a good example to follow among the students who decide to work while being in university. Anyway, we need to keep in mind that study is the most important job for a student. 32. But if you become hungry at midnight, eventually you will get something to eat. Is that really so bad? 36 . Getting hungry at night is a matter of science. 37 Sometimes it’s because of boredom, or your body could not be getting enough nutrition. Having too many sweets or junk foods, or not eating enough healthy fats and protein during the day will leave you wanting snacks at midnight. Is eating at night all that bad? In a word, yes. 38 We want to eat fatty things at night, because our bodies want to hold onto those calories. In the past, this helped our ancestors survive periods of starvation(饥饿), but today, with a McDonald’s on every corner, it’s helping make us sick. 39 Change your lifestyle and eat accordingly. A 6 p.m. dinner makes sense for those who are in bed and fast asleep by 10 p.m., but if you’re usually up until 1 a.m., a dinner at 6 is a serious trap. At midnight, you will be so hungry that you’ll take food to eat from the fridge. 40 Finish your dinner at least two hours before bedtime to allow for proper digestion. A. Be mindful about your choices. B. Move back dinner time a few hours. C. There are many reasons why people snack late at night. D. Now we will find out the truth about midnight snacking. E. So how do you stop yourself from having snacks at midnight? F. What are other suggestions for sleep-promoting midnight snacks? G. He gives personal fitness classes to a dozen people every Monday afternoon, and lectures on how to keep a healthy lifestyle every other week. People who don’t know Cody may think that he’s always been healthy and fit, but in fact, he has only been working at the gym for six months. During his college years, Cody often ate junk food and did no exercise at all. After college, he realized that he couldn’t go on like that any longer, so he began to try to lose weight by eating less. It did have some effect at first, and he lost five pounds over the next two months. But after doing some research online, he learned that the best way to get fit was by doing exercise. So he started to go running every morning and lift weights in the gym every evening. It wasn’t easy for him to keep it up every day at the beginning, but he never gave up, and his effort soon paid off. He lost forty pounds over five months, and he ended up being hired by his gym to work as a fitness coach. 第 7 页 共 7 页查看更多
