In 2009, half of the world's cases of polio were there. But in 2011, there was only one new case of polio in the country. Polio is caused by a virus. It spreads very quickly from one person to another. Victims often lose the use of their arms and legs. In the most serious cases, polio can kill a person. Twenty-five years ago, polio affected about 200,000 children in India each year. The United Nations children's organization, UNICEF, sent teams of health workers into local villages. Team members told families in their neighbourhood about the importance of giving liquid medicine to children to protect them against polio. But it was not easy at first. A member said, “They used to think that their children will not be able to have children when they grow up if they get the drops. They used to think like this. But now they don't. Now they allow their kids to get the drops.” Now things have changed. Asma Khatun is a mother in the town of Ghaziabad in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. She said, “Whenever anyone comes, we get the children vaccinated(接种疫苗). Even if nobody came to our house, we would send our children to a clinic to get vaccinated.” A local Muslim leader says the vaccination campaign has been successful because it is supported by religious leaders. He said, “The polio vaccination campaign has been successful here because our Muslim scholars are with us. With their support, we are able to make people understand that giving children the vaccine is beneficial and crucial.” The Indian government has now launched a new campaign to vaccinate 170 million children under the age of five. The campaign will target newborn babies, migrants and people living in poor, crowded areas where the disease spreads more quickly. 21. What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage? A.To tell the world how India fights against polio. B.To tell us good news about fighting against polio in India. C.To prove that with good methods polio can be prevented. A.didn't believe it could prevent polio B.became relaxed and believed it would work C.were afraid it would do harm to their children D.were afraid it would make their children die 23. What is the Muslim leaders' attitude towards getting children vaccinated now? A.Supportive. B.Negative. C.Uncaring. D.Worried. 24. We know from the last paragraph that the new campaign . A.was started by the World Health Organization B.is successful mainly because of Muslim scholars C.aims at 170 million children under the age of five D.mainly targets people living in poor and crowded areas B 词数:331 主题:保护药用植物 文体:说明文 The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International. Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草制的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to the report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda. Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species(入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says. “Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew (紫衫) and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers. The solution, says the report's author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects studied by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time. “Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton. “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.” Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done,” he told New Scientist. “We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.” 25. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A.Millions of people are threatened with cancer. B.Most countries see a shortage of herbal medicines. C.About two thirds of medicinal species will disappear. D.A number of medicinal species are in danger of extinction. 26. What is the major factor that causes the decreasing of supplies of medicinal plants? A.Over-harvesting. B.Habitat destruction. C.Pollution. D.Invasive species. 27. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Pollution. B.Other species' invasion. C.Sustainability. D.Over-harvesting. 28. What can be inferred from the passage? A.Protecting medicinal plants has a long way to go. B.Local people don't know how to protect medicinal plants. C.Ghillean Prance is optimistic about medicinal plants' future. D.China has made great progress in protecting medicinal plants. Ⅵ.阅读七选五 How to get more sleep? Many studies warn that not having enough sleep may lead to serious health problems, affecting our daily life, work and study. You've probably known this for long, yet you still don't get a full night's sleep due to an incredible work schedule. So what can you do to make more time for sleep, and get a better night's rest overall? Invest in a better-quality mattress(床垫). If you're sleeping on a years-old, worn-out mattress, it's no wonder why you wake up feeling tired in the morning. 29 With a new mattress that's better suited to your sleeping habits, you'll get to sleep faster and stay asleep consistently. 30 There are many habits that can affect how much sleep you get, including how much caffeine you consume throughout the day (and when you consume it—even a few hours before bedtime can interfere with sleep), whether or not you physically exercise, and how long you spend staring at a digital screen before bed. Take a closer look at your schedule. 31 In Western culture, there's a lot of pressure to fill up our schedules to seem important and socially integrated, so your daily activities might have some faults or unnecessary tasks that can be skipped or delayed. 32 Sleep is even more important than you probably realized, but it's entirely within your power to reshape your sleeping habits for health. Make sleep your first priority, scheduling time for it the way you'd schedule a meeting, and work the rest of your schedule around it. 33 A.Watch your habits. B.Some habits contribute to a good night's sleep. C.Without enough sleep, you could take more risks in your life. D.A new mattress can be a big investment, but it's almost worth the money. E.Draw a line between professional and personal time, and make sleep a higher priority. F.If you feel like you're too busy to sleep, consider taking a second look at your schedule. G.In time, it will become the new routine, and you'll improve your health and productivity. 课时作业(三十七) Ⅰ.1. effectively 2.possession 3.astonishing 4. sharpen 5.abnormal Ⅱ.6. felt 7.taste 8.prove 9.sounds 10.seems Ⅲ.11.swelling up 12.trying out 13.subscribe to 14.let out 15.worn them out Ⅳ.16.If so 17.are likely to happen 18.have learned 19.just as it was 20.as is our lifestyle Ⅴ.
