The boy, known only as “Blake” in the letter, wrote, “Dear Santa, We had to leave our house. Dad was mad. We had to do all the chores. Dad got everything he wanted. Mom said it was time to leave and she would take us to a safer place where we don’t have to be scared.” “Blake is a 7-year-old boy in one of our shelters, and his mom found this letter in his backpack...” Posted by SafeHaven of Tarrant County on Wednesday, December 18, 2019. “I’m still nervous. I don’t want to talk to the other kids,” he continued. “Are you going to come this Christmas? Can you bring a dictionary, and a compass and a watch?” The most heart-wrenching part of the letter was the last line that read, “I also want a very very very good dad. Can you do that too?” Officials with SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a group seeking to help end domestic (家庭的) violence, posted Blake’s letter to its Facebook page. Now, some of the child’s wishes have come true. All of the gifts he asked for have been donated by people in the community. Though SafeHaven received more than 10,000 gifts this year, they want to shine a light on the bigger issue of domestic violence. “To us, it was kind of a story that we’ve heard all the time,” Kathryn Jacob, the organization’s president and CEO, told Today. “Like tonight, we have 73 kids in the shelter.” “Blake is just one of many.” 21. The little boy asked Santa for a “very good dad” because _________. A. his dad was too strict with him. B. he was ill-treated by his dad. C. he was forced to do all the chores. D. his dad didn’t buy him any gifts. 22. What do we know about SafeHaven? A. It has received a lot of concern so far. B. It provides services for homeless children. C. To introduce their shelter. C. To tell more information about Blake. D. To draw attention to domestic violence. B Pinocchio may be just a children’s fairy tale, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated this so-called “Pinocchio effect” and found that our noses don't grow when we tell a lie, but actually shrink a bit. Dr. Gomez Milan and his team developed a lie detector test that used thermography (体温计) to tell if people were lying, and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tip of their nose dropped up to 1.2℃, while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5℃. Scientist also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink, although the difference is undetected by the human eye. “One has to think in order to lie, which raises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr. Gomez Milan explained the findings. “At the same time, we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose” For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while their temperature is scanned by technology. One of these tasks required making a 3 to 4 minutes call to their parents or a friend and telling a significant lie. Participants had to make up the lie themselves during the call. Interestingly, this lie detector picked up the "Pinocchio effect" temperature difference in 80 percent of the test subjects, which is a better rate of success than that of any modem lie detector. “With this method we have achieved to increase accuracy”, said Dr. Gomez Milan, who added that law enforcement interviewers could one day combine other lie detection technology with thermal imaging to achieve better results. 24. Why does the writer talk about Pinocchio in the first paragraph? A. To tell a fairy tale. B. To give an example. C. To talk about a scientist. D. To introduce the topic. 25. How did Dr. Gomez Milan feel about the lie detector? A. Doubtful. B. Surprised. C. Confident. D. Puzzled. 26. What lesson can we learn from the text? A. A lie will travel very hard. B. Once a liar always a liar. C. A lie never lives to be old. D. Many ways to bring a liar to light. C Rainbow-coloured rubbish is the colourful waste created by a Swedish city with a unique recycling system. Like many cities in Sweden, Eskilstuna has an impressive recycling record. It met the EU’s 2020 target of recycling 50% of waste many years ago. Almost everyone who lives here follows a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code. The reason for this becomes clear at the city’s recycling plant. The bags arrive all jumbled up (被混在一起) because they're collected altogether, once a fortnight from outside people’s houses. But thanks to those bright colours, scanners can select the bags and separate them efficiently. The food waste in green bags is processed on site into slurry to make biogas, which powers the city’s buses. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-contamination, so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things. Like the rest of Sweden, Eskilstuna is committed to sending zero waste from its citizens to landfill. Waste that cannot be recycled is incinerated(焚化) at a local plant to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, but does create greenhouse gases. As countries around the world try to improve their recycling rates, some may think of Eskilstuna as an example to follow, as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get busy sorting at home. 27. What can we say about the recycling system used in Eskilstuna? A. It is a colorful policy. B. It is a temporary success. C. It is an ordinary recycling system. D. It is a practical method of recycling. 28. What really makes the system of rainbow-colored recycling outstanding? A. The strict recycling policy. B. The self-discipline of citizens. C. The bright colour. D. The eco-friendly code. 29. Why is the non-recyclable waste burnt to ashes at a local plant in Eskilstuna? A. To send zero waste to landfill. B. To make electricity. C. To reduce dependence on fossil fuels. D. To decrease greenhouse gases. 30. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Some countries set a good example to Eskilstuna. B. Eskilstuna follows in the footsteps of other countries. C. Some countries may adopt the system of rainbow-colored recycling. D. Eskilstuna may force its citizens to get busy sorting at home. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The first time I went to a playground in Berlin, I was surprised. All the German parents were huddled together, drinking coffee, not paying attention to their children who were hanging off a wooden dragon 20 feet above a sand pit. Contrary to stereotypes(模式化观念),most German parents I’ve met are the opposite of strict. 31. Those parents at the park weren’t ignoring their children; they were trusting them. Here are a few surprising things Berlin’s parents do: Don’t push reading. Berlin’s kindergartens don’t emphasize academics. In fact, teachers and other parents discouraged me from teaching my children to read. 32. But even in first grade, academics aren’t pushed very hard. Our grade school provides a half-day of instruction interrupted by two outdoor breaks. 33. A note came home from school along with my excited second grader. They were doing a project on fire. Would I let her light candles and perform experiments with matches? Together we lit candles and burned things, safely. It was brilliant. Let children go almost everywhere alone. Most grade school kids walk without their parents to school and around their neighborhoods. Some even take the subway alone. 34. , of course, but they usually focus on traffic, not abductions(绑架). Take the kids outside every day. According to a German saying, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” The value of outside time is promoted in the schools. 35. No matter how cold and grey it gets, and in Berlin it gets pretty cold, parents still bundle their kids up and take them to the park, or send them out on their own. A. Encourage kids to play with fire. B. Children are inspired to go out for leisure. C. German parents are concerned about safety. D. It’s also obvious on Berlin’s numerous playgrounds. E. Kindergarten was a time for play and social learning. F. They place a high value on independence and responsibility. G. Most people from the East believe that wearing a mask is important to control the spread of the COVID-19. But people in the West generally would argue that, unless one is already ill, wearing a mask is simply unnecessary. In Eastern countries like China, mask-wearing is rooted in their cultures. In fact, people in the East wear masks not just to protect themselves from illness but also for a variety of other reasons. In many Asian countries, masks are worn in many scenes in daily life, such as doing housework or visiting patients in the hospital. They can give people the comfort of being protected. In recent years, they are worn simply for cosmetic(美容的) reasons. Young people in Japan, for example, wear masks as a fashion statement, expressing their personal style through unique designs and patterns. In Asia, wearing a face mask is also an outward expression of group-centered values. With one’s face partially covered, one becomes part of a giant collectivist whole. “People communicated their responsibilities to the social group of which they were members,” wrote Peter Baer, a research professor in social theory at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. “By covering an individual’s face, it gave greater characteristics to collective identity.” In Western countries, however, individual values are the most important. As a citizen, it is one’s duty to prevent the spread of illness by following proper procedures, such as washing one’s hands and limiting one’s contact with others. A face mask is reserved only for those showing symptoms of illness. Whether from the East or the West, social culture and peer pressure have played an important role in one’s decision about whether or not to wear a mask. That’s because human beings are social creatures who take into consideration what other members of society think of us. The most important thing is to respect others’ opinions, no matter how different they are. 56.was chosen 57.to take 58.a 59.inspiring 60.weekly 61.with 62.who 63.success 64.belief 65.friends 应用文写作: One possible version Mr. Robert, How have you been recently?
