With its numerous malls, hotels, and beautiful beaches, Dubai has always been a popular holiday destination. This city was visited by around 5 million tourists each year. The government wanted to increase this number to 15 million. However, Dubai has only 45 miles of coastline, which is nowhere enough for so many people. To solve this problem, an island that looked like a palm tree was built in 2006, and named the Palm Jumeirah. The plan for the island was extraordinary. It was to host several hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and homes. Although the initial plan was to build the island from concrete(水泥), a decision was taken to create it from sand and gravel(砾石), so as to give it a natural look. To make sure that this project was a success, the best engineers from across the world were employed. Engineers from Holland formed the majority in this group. To begin with, the engineers calculated the strength of storms at sea, and also the expected amount of rise in water levels due to global warming. And then they found that, the proposed location for the island was neither very wide nor deep. One of the difficulties the engineers came across was to put sand on the sea bed to create the breakwater(防浪堤).Finding the right sand for the project was also a daunting task, as the sand from Dubai's deserts was too fine. Instead, sand from the sea was used, as it was coarser(粗糙). Once the breakwater was built, construction of the island began. The Palm Island are really impressive in terms of engineering. However, these projects are so large that they may have changed the ecology of the region. Also, an immense amount of money and resources go into maintaining the islands, which is a major concern at the moment. Only time will tell if building the Palm Islands was actually a good decision. 21. What does Paragraph 1 mainly show us? A. Beautiful attractions of Dubai. B. The geographical features of Dubai. C. The purposes of building the Palm Jumeirah. D. The difficulty in developing the tourism industry. 22. Why were some changes made to the initial plan for the project? A. To reduce the building cost. B. To get the islands completed sooner. C. To get the building materials more easily. D. To make the island look more natural. 23. According to the last paragraph, how is the construction of the Palm Islands? A. Profitable. B. Surprising. C. Worrying. D. Unbelievable. B Our neighbor said the storm lasted four minutes. The town houses are destroyed or damaged. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured. On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some rolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to get to the relatively safe closet down on the first floor. As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have stuck through us. Finally, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp(头皮) were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay. All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn’t believe it was over. 24. How was the old couple aware of the tornado? A. They learned it from their neighbors who passed their house. B. They learned it from some common indications before a tornado. C. They found the news report forecasting the tornado on TV. D. They found the tornado on top of them when they were upstairs. 25. We can infer from paragraph4 that ____________ A. The old couple was very grateful to the branch. B. The old couple missed the branch very much. C. The old couple was hit by the branch on the head. D. The old couple was fortunate to have a narrow escape. 26. The passage is most probably taken from _______. A. a brochure B. a novel C. newspaper D. a magazine C Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track. But while it's long been believed that endorphins (脑内啡)—chemicals in the body that cause happiness — are behind the so-called “runner's high”,a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew. According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素)may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling. To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice. Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety. But after being given a drug to block their endorphins they changed. However, when their endocannabinoids were blocked with a different drug, their runner's high symptoms seemed to fade. “The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner's high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on science blog Lifchacker. Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it's already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety. The UK's National Health Service even prescribes exercise to patients who are suffering from depression. “Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it's especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression,” it wrote on its website. It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we're feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes. 27. What did scientists from German universities recently discover? A. Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression. B. The runner's high could be caused by endocannabinoids. C. Endorphins may contribute to one's high spirits after running. D. The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one's mood. 28. The scientists gave mice drugs in their experiment to . A. find what reduces the runner's high symptoms B. see the specific symptoms of the runner's high C. identify what is responsible for the runner's high D. test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released 29. The underlined word “notion” in Paragraph 7 has the closest meaning to . A.effect B. goal C. question D. belief 30. According to the UK's National Health Service, regular workouts . A. are the best way to treat depression B. can help ease depression symptoms C. only work for those with serious depression D. can help people completely recover from depression 第二节 (共 5 小题, 每小题 2 分, 满分 10 分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。 How to Become a Lifelong Learner Learning doesn't stop just because school does. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was very unfriendly to them. One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to have them fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school. Ali heard about a long distance race that would be held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win the new shoes. The day of the race arrived. Ali has a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground. Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. __________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ ________________________________________________________________________________ _____ 第一节 应用文写作(满分 25 分) 假设你是李华,是你们学校 English Club 的负责人。 October,7th, 2019 Textbook Reading Aloud Competition Notice Boys and girls, ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ _________ ________________________________________________________________________________ _________ English Club (One possible version) Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. W: But he is still so young, and I like to stay with him at home for some more time. Text 2 W: Do you plan on flying to New York, Jack? M: Yes. It costs a lot but the trains and buses don’t run the day I’m going. So I have no choice. Text 3 M: How many students have joined the club? W: Ten the first day, and three since then. M: How many more do you think will join? W: I expect two more. Text 4 W: You don’t like this kind of music, do you? M: Not really. It makes me sleepy. How did you know? W: It was just a guess from your facial expression. Text 5 M: Some doctors love to lecture people about their lifestyles. W: Well, I don’t think they can make a difference. Text 6 W: Hello? M: Hi, Jennie. I’ve got the milk and the yogurt in my shopping cart. What else do we need? W: Hang on. Let me look in the kitchen. M: OK. W: Um…will you get some carrots? And make sure they are organic. M: Organic? Aren’t they more expensive? W: A little bit, but it’s worth it. Text 7 W: Hey, James. I heard your wife just had a baby. Congratulations! M: Thanks, Jenny. We’re still trying to get used to having a baby around the house. We certainly don’t sleep as much as we used to. W: sWell, I remember when Mike and I had our first child. It’s a lot of work at first, but you’ll get used to it. M: Yeah. I’m sure you’re right. Thanks for the encouragement. Text 8 M: Say, what’s your favorite sport? W: It’s hard to say. I like volleyball a lot, but I guess I like tennis better. M: Are you good at it? W: Yes, quite good. How about a tennis game sometime? M: Sorry, I just like to watch almost all kinds of ball games—football, baseball, basketball, golf…I’m strictly a spectator(观众). W: You mean you never do anything yourself? M: Well, I only like to do some jogging in the fresh morning air. W: Ah, you’re an early bird then. M: You are quite right. As an elderly person, I always get up at dawn. W: But you look like you are in your forties. M: I’m flattered. I’m almost 60. Text 9 W: Oh, Mike, you look so tired. M: I was up all night, trying to get ready for my chemistry test this morning. W: Any idea how you did on it? M: Yeah. Professor Porter’s already put grades on her door, and I…well, I could have done better. W: That really surprises me. You know so much about science. M: Yeah, well, it’s not surprising to me. I know the material well, but when it comes to taking tests, I never do well. W: You should consider taking some courses at the Study Skills Center. It’s run by some professors that teach undergraduates some skills that help them do better in classes. Last year, I took a course from them on how to do research on the Internet, and another one on writing term papers. They were really useful. M: What other kinds of courses do they offer? W: They also have a class on test-taking skills. M: Wow, that’s exactly what I want. I should go there now and try to talk to someone. W: You can go there tomorrow. Right now, you should go back to your house and catch up on your sleep. M: I think you’re right. Text 10 M: This is What’s Trending Today. That is the sound of Big Ben. People from London like to call the ringing of Big Ben “bongs”. They mark the start of a new hour. Big Ben started making its bongs 158 years ago. But beginning on August 21st, it will go silent for four years. The bell will ring for the last time at 12 noon. The bell will be disconnected from the clock as crews launch a major repair project in the tower. The clock, however, will continue to tell the time, silently. The only time people in London will hear the bells will be on Remembrance Sunday ( 和 平 纪 念 日 ), which falls on November 12th this year, and New Year’s Eve. The repair project will cost about $40 million, said Steve Jaggs. He is known as “The Keeper of the Great Clock. ” Jaggs said the goal is to keep the building safe and the famous timepiece(钟) working for future generations to enjoy. The last time the bell stopped ringing for repairs was in 2007. It was also silent for the funerals of former Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. There was reaction to the silencing of Big Ben on social media. Joana reacted to the news on Twitter. She proposed that there be “one minute of silence for the lost bongs of Big Ben”. And that’s What’s Trending Today. I’m Dan Friedell.
