Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years? Jane Addams (1860-1935) Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community(社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Rachel Carson (1907-1964) If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans. Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present) When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator(参议员) and ,in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court. Rosa Parks (1913-2005) On December 1,1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rasa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. B How do you address(称呼) people in English when you want to talk to them? The following may be some simple rules the beginners should follow. 1.When talking to strangers there is often no special form of address in English. Usually, if you want to catch the attention of a stranger it is necessary to use such phrases as “Excuse me” 2.In British English “Sir” and “Madam” are considered to be too formal for most situations. They are used mostly to customers in shops or restaurants. While in American English “Sir” and “Madam” are not so formal and are commonly used between strangers, especially with old people whose names you don’t know. 3.When you talk to some people you know, you can use their names. If you are friends, use their first names; if your relationship is more formal, use “Mr., “Mrs.”, “Ms”, etc, before their family names. 4.There are many other forms of address which can be used between friends and strangers. However, many of these are limited in use. For example, “pal” and “mate” can be used between strangers, but are usually only used by men talking to other men. 5.According to the passage, “Excuse me” is mainly used to _____. A.address a person you don’t know B.apologize to others C.catch the attention of a stranger D.suggest good manners 6.If John Smith is your best friend, according to the passage you should often call him _____. A.John B.Smith C.Mr. John D.Mr. Smith 7.Which of the following is NOT true? A.“Sir” and “Madam” are used more often in America than in England. B.People often use “Mr.”, “Mrs.” or “Ms.” before the first names of those people who they don’t know very well. C.“Pal” and “mate” are usually only used among men. D.While addressing friends, people just use their first names 8.The passage is mostly likely taken from an English _____. A.textbook B.card C.storybook D.grammar book C One day two young men are walking in a big forest. One is fat, and the other is thin. “We are good friends. We must help each other. If we meet any beast, I’ll help you,” the thin man says. “I’ll help you, too,” the fat one says. They walk on. After a while they hear a great noise. It is a big bear. It is coming this way. The two young men run away quickly. One of them climbs up a tree, and hides among the leaves. He forgets all about his friend. What about the fat one? He is too fat to climb up a tree. So he throws himself on the ground, closes his eyes, and pretends to be dead. “The bear will think I’m dead,” he thinks to himself. Soon the bear comes up to the fat man, and even puts its nose to his mouth and ears. The fat man holds his breath. The bear thinks he is dead, so it goes away, because bears never touch the dead. The man in the tree comes down. With a smile he asks his friend, “The bear puts its nose so close to your ears. What does it say to you?” The friend answers, “The bear says, “Don’t trust your friend. He runs away from you when you need his help most.” 9._____ climbs up a tree quickly. A.The fat man B.The thin man C.The fat bear D.The thin bear 10.The bear _____at last. A.He breaks his promise B.He fails to climb up the tree. C.He cares much about his friend. D.He also knows what the bear says. D There are so many expressions in American English that sound pleasant but are not. “Face the music” is a good example. Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the key and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please, do not drive it. It is an extremely fast car.” But you do not listen. You want to show off and pretend the car is yours. So, you drive it around the town. As a result, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns, you must tell her what you have done and “face the music.” That could mean losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it. The expression is more than 150 years old. In 1851, the writer James Fenimore Cooper explained “face the music” as theatrical term. In a theater, the orchestra(管弦乐队) often sits in the front of the stage facing the musicians. Many actors are very nervous, a condition called stage fright. “Face the music” came to mean accepting stage fright and not giving in to it. Word experts also say “face the music” may have come from the military. A soldier who did something terrible could be forced out of the army. When that happened, the army drummers would play slow, sad beat. The soldier would be led away seated backward on a horse and facing the music of the drums. There are other American expressions that mean the same thing as “face the music.” If someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it,” they mean you created a bad situation and now you will experience the result. 13.What does the underlined part “the music” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.The unpleasant music. B.The beautiful red sports car. C.The music played by the orchestra. D.The bad result of your actions. 14.Which of the following is an example of “face the music”? A.You have held a concert successfully. B.You will buy the sports car you like best. C.Your friend invites you to attend a live concert. D.You have to go home with your bad exam results. 15.What is most likely to be discussed following the last paragraph? A.The origin of “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” B.Some other expressions similar to “face the music.” C.The true meaning of “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” D.Other examples to explain the meaning of “face the music.” II.阅读七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Love Your Parents Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part, a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents. 16 . A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm a coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Without your parents, we might still wander at an unknown corner in an unknown world. Respect them more and cherish these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them, preparing yourself for when you’re off on your own. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend. 17 Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don’t get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it’s cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes. 18 Since you can forgive your friends, why not forgive your parents? Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them. 19 Listen to their old stories and learn from them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another. Some people simply may not be able to love their parents. 20 Seek help if you are being abused in any way. Parents do not have a right to harm you. A. Forgiveness is the key. B. Parents will in turn express their love to you. C. Tell them you love them every morning. D. After this, share your feelings with your parents. E. Please remember parents are as important as friends.
