B The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film(拍摄) a beautiful sunset over the ocean, so that the audiences (观众)could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other forever. He sent his camera crew out one evening to film the sunset for him. The next morning he said to the men, "Have you provided me with that sunset?" "No, sir," the men answered. The director was angry. " Why not ? " he asked. "Well, sir," one of the men answered, "we're on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset." "But I want a sunset!" the director shouted. "Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one." But then a young secretary had an idea. "Why don't you photograph a sunrise," she suggested, "and then play it backwards? Then it'll look like a sunset." "That's a very good idea!" the director said. Then he turned to the camera crew and said, "Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea." The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay. Then at nine o'clock they took it to the director. "Here it is, sir," they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased. They all went into the studio. "All right," the director explained, "now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the 'sunset' behind them." The "sunset" began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop. The birds in the film were flying backwards, and the waves on the sea were going away from the beach. 24. Which of the following is NOT true? A. The crew had to follow the secretary's advice. B. If you want to see a sunrise, the east coat is the place to go. C. The camera crew wasn't able to film the scene the first day. D. The director ordered his crew to stop filming the "sunset". C Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for. We do know, however, that they existed(存在) over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia. The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old. Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn't become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around. But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them. Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modem road design. In the mid-1700s, a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer (层) of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller stones. A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same lime, metal hubs (the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充气轮胎) in 1846. Alloy wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads (柏油路). As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster. 28. What might explain why transport wheels didn't become popular for some time? A. Few knew how to use transport wheels. B. Humans carried farming tools just as well. C. Animals were a good means of transport. D. The existence of transport wheels was not known. 29. What do we know about road design from the passage? A. It was easier than wheel design. B. It improved after big changes in vehicle design. C. It was promoted by fast-moving vehicles. D. It provided conditions for wheel design to develop. 30. How is the last paragraph mainly developed? A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons(对比). C. By following time order. D. By making classifications(分类). 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. The beginning of road design. B. The development of transport wheels. C. The history of public transport. D. The invention of fast-moving vehicles. D We go to the dining room with them, do sports with them, and share little secrets with them. Having a friend with you is a huge advantage in life. In fact, the truth is that the friends we make in high school can last a lifetime. However, admit it or not, there are little bumps(突起) in the road, even between good friends.“Friendships are difficult, and the closer they are, the more difficult they become,” noted The Guardian. According to a new survey done in the UK, as many as 10 percent of people don’t have a single friend to turn to, said the newspaper. So, how do we keep a good friendship? The first rule is acting carefully. At some point, you will be forced to choose between being nice and giving a friend the honesty. “But honesty is not always safe,” said The Guardian. “Sometimes you are forced to find out what your friendship truly is based on.” Friendships can come from a number of different wishes. Unhealthy ones for flattery (奉承) are as common as the healthy ones for common interests and a shared sense of humor. So we should know the fact that the healthy and unhealthy ones are often mixed together. We all know that friends love each other, but they must also be allowed to detest each other sometimes. You must learn to accept a little fly in the ointment (药膏), which means that even if you have a big argument, you won’t lose your friendship. Besides, the nature of friendship changes, and you have to change with it. After you have entertained each other for a while, a good friendship will turn into something precious and firm, even if you aren’t always laughing. You are still there, you still enjoy being around each other, and you value your shared history. 32. We can learn from the second paragraph that . A. the way to a good friendship isn’t smooth B. a true friendship will last for a long time C. there’s no real friendship in our life D. it is easy to keep a good friendship 33. How many pieces of advice does the writer offer to keep a good friendship? A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5. 34. What does the underlined word “detest” in Paragraph 6 probably mean? A. Hate. B. Excuse. C. Punish D. Respect. 35. Which proverb can best show the main idea of the passage? A. A friend is a second self. B. A true friend is hard to make. C. All is common between friends. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Improve your English through reading Right now you are reading English.
