Thus the start of talk show's golden age can be considered as 1948, even though televisions weren’t common in American homes until the 1950s. From 1949 to 1973, nearly half of all daytime programming was talk. Why are there so many talk shows? A talk show costs less than $100,000 per episode(一集) to produce whereas many of today's TV series cost more than $1 million an episode. Thus, if successful, it can produce handsome profits. Still, it takes a lot of work. Since 1948, hundreds of talk shows have come and gone, with only a few having true staying power. There are several types of talk shows, but while the styles might vary(变化), the format is limited. What we are most used to is the informal guest –host format, in which show's hosts welcome famous people or other talk-worthy persons for an informal discussion. The second most common format is the public issues show, in which hosts interview people in the news or experts in a given field. Shows that follow this format include both morning news programs and “issue” talk shows. The Museum of Broadcast Communication's Bernard M.Timberg notes two governing principles of all successful talk shows: The host is everything: The host has a high degree of control over his show, from subject matter to comedic atmosphere. He is also the show's brand and is responsible for it. The host can attract and refuse guests, organize his program and, in many cases, name a successor(继任者)when he retires . Right here, right now: The second rule is that a talk show must be experienced in the present tense, whether it is broadcast live or taped in front of an audience earlier in the day. They should feel fresh, as if they are happening in the moment, even if the show is a 10-year-old rerun. 24. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about? A. How talk shows appeared B. Why talk shows appeared C. When talk shows appeared. D. Where talk shows appeared 25.What is an advantage of talk shows? A. They are easy to make. B. They are cheap to produce C. They come in varied formats D. They remain successful for a long time 26. The two formats of talk shows differ in . A. the atmosphere they create B. the time they are broadcast C. whether they are broadcast D. whether they invite famous guests 27. What is the key to talk shows' success according to the second principle? A. Dealing with the most popular issues. B. Giving the audience an up-to-date feeling. C. Inviting the audience to the place where the shows are made. D. Running the shows several times to refresh the audience's memory. Shy people are anxious and self –conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions too much. Negative thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing ”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You're just saying that to make me feel good; I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life. 32. The first paragraph is mainly about . A. the effect of shyness on people B. the cause of shyness. C. the feelings of shy people D. the questions in the minds of shy people 33. According to the writer, self-awareness is . A. harmful to people B. a weak point of shy people C. the cause of unhappiness D. a good characteristic 34.What is the shy people's reaction to a praise ? A. They are pleased by it. B. They are very sensitive to it C. They feel it is not true D. They feel they are worthy of it 35. We can learn from the passage that shyness can . A. have nothing to do with lack of self respect.
