It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better.” Indeed, in the eyes of artists, loneliness never seems to go out of style. There are paintings that portray loneliness, songs that are inspired by loneliness, and many works of literature that center around this theme. In the eyes of UK economist Rachel Reeves, however, loneliness is far from romantic. Instead, it’s a “giant evil” that’s become a serious problem in the country. So just how serious is it? On Jan 17, UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed politician Tracey Crouch as the country’s very first “Minister for Loneliness”. Her job is to address the loneliness that the country’s been feeling — a problem which, according to UK government research, is affecting more than 9 million people in the country, and is more harmful to one’s physical and mental health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And the problem hasn’t just appeared recently. Back in 2014, the UK was given the title of the “loneliness capital of Europe” by The Telegraph. A survey carried out by the newspaper found that British people were less likely to get to know their neighbors or build strong relationships with people than those from other European countries. “There is something British about wanting to deal with problems yourself,” Christian Guy, director of the Centre for Social Justice think-tank (智囊团), told The Telegraph. But this doesn’t mean that the problem only affects Britons. In fact, we’re all suffering from loneliness now more than ever, in spite of most of the world now having access to the internet, which has enabled us to be more connected than ever. What we need, according to Kim Leadbetter, sister of the late UK politician Jo Cox, is to have “proper human connections”. “Our lives nowadays are so busy. We spend the vast majority of our time on our phones, on our laptops. We need to press pause on that and actually sit down and speak to human beings,” Leadbetter said at an event last year. But the first steps toward fighting this problem are to accept its existence and not be ashamed or intimidated by it. After all, without loneliness, many beautiful paintings, songs, and literary works wouldn’t even exist. And “evil” or not, being lonely is simply part of the experience of being human. 24. What can we learn about the UK’s loneliness problem? A. The government is working to solve the problem. B. More than half of British people suffer from loneliness. C. The UK became the loneliest country in the world in 2014. D. British people communicate less with their neighbors than ever. 25. According to the text, social loneliness _______. A. does more harm mentally than physically B. didn’t attract the public’s attention until recently C. is mainly caused by the wide use of the internet D. has become a problem worldwide 26. What does Leadbetter suggest doing to cope with loneliness? A. Making more phone calls to our friends. B. Stopping the use of electronic products. C. Interacting with the people around us face to face more often. D. Accepting its existence calmly. 27. Which of the following would the author probably agree with? A. Loneliness is a giant evil of society. B. Only artists can appreciate the beauty of loneliness. C. Loneliness is just a normal part of our life. D. It is hard to find a solution to social loneliness. C It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there. This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handstand” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car. It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world . And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else----someone who wants to go home and get some sleep. Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills. Maybe the popularity of the “handathon” is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Competitors in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end. Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry (竞争) between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spitits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement. 28. What ability is most important in a handathon? A. Having strong powers of attention B. Standing without any support C. Not leaning on the car D. Eating and drinking in five minutes 29. Why is handathon popular? A. It doesn’t need to make any preparation. B. Someone can win with special training C. Anyone who is interested can join in it. D. People get along well with each other in it. 30. Which of the following statements about the “handathon” is right? A. Competitors are not allowed to drop out B. Competitors don’t encourage each other C. Competitors can sit down and take a 10-minute break every hour D. A competitor has to place his or her hand anywhere on the body of a car. 31. Which is the writer’s opinion about the “handathon”? A. It is the easiest of all sports. B. It is not as easy as it looks at first. C. It can last a whole day. D. It is no good competing in a “handathon” D Chicago is considering firm measures to prevent the Asian carp,a giant fish native to the Far East, from coming into North America’s Great Lakes in large numbers. Such a move could cost up to$18bn, a heavy economic burden to the city. This species, more than a metre in length, was originally introduced to southern US states three decades ago to control weeds in sewage(污水)treatment plants. But they escaped into the Mississippi River and increased in number quickly, making their way north towards the Great Lakes and threatening the native fish species along the way. “Dozens of them will often leap out of the water as boats approach.’’Michael Beecham,a local environmental expert, described how frightening the scene was. “I’ve gone down the river and seen these fish jump up and hit me in the face.It is a big problem for our native species.” he said. A meeting has been organized to find a technological solution to the carp problem, one of which involves blocking parts of Chicago’s canal system.Listening at the meeting was John Goss, who was worried about the effect that having barriers in the canal system would have on industry. “It would certainly increase the cost of transportation,”he told. “It is currently very cheap and efficient to bring materials and finished goods down the Chicago ship canal.’’ Another cheaper option is to eat the fish out of existence. Dirk Fucik is selling carp burger( 鲤鱼汉堡包) at his fish shop not far from downtown Chicago. He thinks the carps are a great resource. “To catch it and throw it away is a waste,”he says. “Eating them helps solve the problem and also provides jobs.”But the idea has not yet caught on.So far,he is the only person in Chicago selling carp burgers. 32.What can we learn about the Asian carp according to the passage? A. It is very adaptable to the new environment. B. It is originally used to control weeds in the Great Lakes. C. It has become a new food in many restaurants. D. It has caused parts of Chicago’s canal system to be blocked. 33.From John Goss’s point of view, the building of barriers ______________. A. can force the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes B. may lead to the increasing cost of industrial products C. will help the canal system work more efficiently D. will bring high profits to the related companies 34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage? A. The Americans have included the Asian carp in their food list. B. Catching Asian carps has created many jobs in America. C. Dirk Fucik is a pioneer in selling carp burgers in Chicago. D. Throwing away the caught fish is a waste of the resources. 35.What’s the best title of the passage? A. Chicago goes to war with Asian carps B. The Asian carp escapes from the Great Lakes C. However, if you are constantly comparing yourself to others, it’s a red flag. If you compare yourself to a previous time in your life and you believe that your past was better than your present, it’s a sure sign you unconsciously compare yourself to others. 37 Focus on your present and enjoy new happy and bad moments in your life instead of past ones. Do you want to make more money because your friend has a higher paycheck than you? You think that your neighbors, friends, and coworkers have a better life because they can afford to buy a new car. But, are you sure that they really can afford all those things? After all, they might have lots of debts and financial problems. 38 Probably you often say something like ‘Your hair is more beautiful than mine’ or ‘You’re so slim and I’m so plump since I can’t drop those extra pounds.’ You should never ever say such things. 39 You are special and you are absolutely beautiful no matter your age, weight and height. Many of us are trying to stop comparing ourselves to others, but at the same time many of us don’t even know that we have such a bad habit. 40 Remember, no one is perfect. Stay grateful, love yourself and enjoy your present life. A. When you compare, you find your strengths and weaknesses. B. Learn how to love your body, accept yourself and love yourself. C. People who are constantly comparing themselves to others are more likely to succeed. D. Your past was not as good as you may think now. E. Comparing yourself to others has its advantages and disadvantages. F. Comparing brings insecurity and makes us miserable. G.
