He wants it so badly that he decided to sit for a law school enrtance exam this year and see how he did. To his amazement, he not only passed the exam with flying colors, but also received an admission letter to attend a university — The Univesidade Paulista.‎ However, when Joao showed up on the first day of school with his dad, he was told that they had made a big mistake! In order to attend the university, Joao has to first graduate from high school. His parents are of course very proud of his achievement, though a little disappointed that Joao didn’t even get to see the university campus(校园).‎ They say that while Joao is smart and two classes ahead of this age in school — he is by no means a boring genius(天才). He is just a normal boy who loves to read and study but also has lots of fun with his friends. The University said that Joao’s performance was amazing, especially given his age. Joao found the test quite easy, saying he had only prepared for it the week before.‎ While Joao is certainly a very smart child, the Brazilian Bar Association is a little worried that the standard of admission in some of the private law schools may be too low — and have started an investigation. At the same time, Joao is back in his fifth-grade class, still dreaming of his future as a Federal Judge.‎ ‎21. Why did Joao decide to take the exam?‎ A. To leave Brazil. B. Which of the following can best describe Joao according to Paragraph 3?‎ A. Honest and friendly. B. Proud and optimistic. ‎ C. Clever and easy-going. D. Smart and self-centered. ‎ B For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone’s life as nothing.‎ Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.‎ The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.‎ A cold fish is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.‎ ‎ Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.‎ Out in the cold means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise — he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be. ‎ ‎25. There are ________ expressions related to cold that are mentioned in the passage.‎ A. 3 B. 4 C. 6 D. 7 ‎ ‎26. When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by “________”.‎ ‎ A. I give him the cold shoulder B. I think he is a cold-blooded man ‎ C. I think he is a cold fish D. I’m likely to get cold feet ‎27. If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say “________”.‎ A. she is a cold-blooded killer B. she gets cold feet ‎ C. she is a cold fish D. she is out in the cold ‎28. We can use the expression “________” to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy.‎ A. cold-blooded B. cold shoulder C. cold feet D. cold-hearted ‎ C Stephan Pastis is the author of the New York Times best seller, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, his first book for young readers.‎ In the novel, he writes about bumbling(经常出错的)11-year-old kid detective Timmy Failure and his lazy business partner, a polar bear named Total. The two run a detective company, Total Failure Inc. Timmy hopes his company will make so much money that his mother can stop worrying about paying the bills.‎ TFK:‎ As a kid did you ever want to be a detective like Timmy? ‎ PASTIS:‎ Yeah. I wanted to be as clever as those kids in the detective stories, like Encyclopedia Brown, and I never was. I would read Encyclopedia Brown and I couldn’t solve any of the mysteries. So, yes, I wanted to be a little cleverer, I suppose.‎ TFK:‎ ‎ Why did you choose to make Timmy’s partner a polar bear?‎ PASTIS:‎ ‎ I think because Timmy doesn’t have a dad, so he needs a protector. Total is so big that when you see him side by side with Timmy you see that protector, but he is very soft, so he is a comforting protector.‎ TFK:‎ ‎ What do you want kids to get out of Timmy’s story?‎ PASTIS:‎ ‎ I want them to laugh. When I was a kid reading books I would get bored easily, but if something was funny I found it interesting. I tried to put something funny in the book to make it more interesting.‎ TFK:‎ ‎ What advice do you give kids with creative talents?‎ PASTIS:‎ ‎ You have to work on them every day. It’s the same way you would lift weights to get strong or run every day to take part in a race. It's something you have to put time towards. Even if it’s 10 or 15 minutes in the morning, if you work regularly you get better.‎ ‎29. Timmy Failure is________.‎ A. the owner of a polar bear B. a clever but lazy detective ‎ C.
