Elizabeth looked down. “Is it from Harvard? They refused my application once.” Emily answered, “No, it’s from Yale.” Quickly, Elizabeth walked downstairs. She took the letter and opened it. “Rejected again,” Elizabeth said unhappily. “Who says women can’t be doctors?” “They are fools not to accept you. You can’t let them stop you, Lizzie,” Emily said. “I won’t. I’ll apply to (申请) Geneva Medical College,” Elizabeth told her sister. As it turned out, the professors at Geneva Medical College were not fools. They allowed Elizabeth Blackwell to study medicine. In 1848, a year before Elizabeth would graduate, a typhoid epidemic (伤寒流行病) broke out in New York. Elizabeth wrote to Emily. “There’s an outbreak (爆发) of typhoid, and I am going to help. It is dangerous, so if I should not survive, please do me the honor of studying medicine yourself.” Emily replied, “Encouraged by your dream and success, I have decided to study in medical school, as well.” Having survived the disease, Elizabeth tried to set up a private medical practice. “I graduated first in my class but no one believes a woman can be a good doctor,” she said to Emily one day. “All I hear is that doctors should be men, while women should stay home to cook and clean.” Emily said worriedly, “I will graduate in June with my medical degree. What shall we do?” Elizabeth thought for a while and replied, “There’s a big house in the poor part of our town. We can practice medicine there for people who couldn’t afford care.” Soon with the help of some friends, Elizabeth and Emily bought the house and opened a hospital for poor women and children. “We’ll have an all-women staff (员工),” Elizabeth said. “And later, we’ll add a medical college for women!” Emily added. At last, Elizabeth realized her dream of being a doctor. 21. The underlined word “Rejected” in the first paragraph can be best replaced by _____. A. Refused B. Praised C. Changed D. Accepted 22. In 1848, Elizabeth wrote to Emily to _____. A. persuade Emily to come to help the sick B. ask Emily to study medicine if she died C. warn Emily the danger of typhoid epidemic D. tell Emily she would graduate from college 23. We can learn from the text that Elizabeth _____. A. received strong support from her sister B. refused to go to study at Yale University C. founded a medical college after graduation D. was finally accepted by Harvard after her efforts B Should adult children live with their parents? Ratfink (Australia) In our country children are now staying at home longer than previously. It's not uncommon to see kids staying until their 30s or until married. This is in part due to the high cost of housing. Besides, kids are often in so much debt after purchasing a car, paying for their education and cost on nonessentials such as the latest phones. Mick (UK) Coddling (溺爱) people does not help them stand on their own. Let them live at home during college to save money if you must, but once they graduate, they should be on their own. This doesn't mean parents can't help them out, but living at home as an adult? No. After four years of college you are as prepared as you will ever be to live on your own. WRONGMAN (US) Independence is important for young adulthood. It is my duty as a parent to push my daughter out of the nest, when she graduates. We are trying to help her gain confidence and independence for the college years. Although we pay the majority of her rent, she is expected to work parttime for food money. If she chooses not to work ...hunger is a strong motivator (动机). She is also well aware that upon graduation she is on her own financially. Jeremy (China) Adult children can live with their parents; however, I cannot bear them taking advantage. They should pay rent, food and other expenses just as they would if they were living with a roommate. They should also provide assistance to their parents, such as cooking meals, cleaning and driving to appointments. 24.In Australia, kids are staying at home longer because ______. A.they are lacking enough independence B.their parents are worried about their safety C.living on their own may bring much pressure D.they have been used to living a rich life 25.Which one is Mick's opinion to parents? D.Not push children out if they don't want. 26.What did WRONGMAN do to his daughter? A.Help her pay all the rent. B.Force her to live at home. C.Advise her not to work parttime. D.Help her become independent. 27.How many people think an adult shouldn't live with parents? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. C Do you jump out of bed early, wide awake and ready to start your day? If so, you would be called an "early bird". Perhaps, you hate the sound of your alarm clock each morning and have little energy until afternoon. If so, you're probably a "night owl". Most people can be divided into such two groups, but what makes us this way? And is one better than the other? There are different opinions. Usually, early risers have been praised as hard-working while those who prefer to get up late are considered lazy. Most people believe the early bird catches the worm. Yet some scientists now believe "night owls" can really focus(集中) longer and produce more than early risers. Research has found that the early bird does not always get the worm. In a Belgian study, both "morning people" and "evening people" were watched during their normal asleep and awake routines(常规).After 10 hours of being awake, the "evening people" became more alert(思维敏捷的). However, the "morning people" became sleepy and less focused. Researchers believe the reason for this difference is that night owls receive a last-minute increase from their brains. This added energy allows them to stay alert for longer periods of time. Environment, lifestyle, activities and childhood routines all may have an effect on sleeping habits, yet genetics(遗传学)may play the biggest role. It is possible to change your sleeping habits through regular bedtimes, early exercise and by avoiding midnight snacks. But if you're happy rising early or staying up late, you're probably doing what works best for your own personal body clock. 28. The author introduces the subject by ________. A.telling an interesting story B.giving different opinions C.showing research results D.asking a question 29. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 really mean? A.Those who get up early achieve their goals. B.Early to bed, early to rise is good for health. C."Night owls" can focus longer than "early birds". D."Early birds" are as hard-working as "night owls". 30.What did the researchers find in a Belgian study? A.Late risers become sleepier than early risers. B.Early risers become as focused as later risers. C.Late risers can think quickly after being awaken for 10 hours. D.Early risers can think clearly after being awake for 10 hours. 31.What opinion does the author finally agree to? A.People should get up early. B.Whatever time suits you, it's OK C.Staying up late is good for health. D.It's impossible to change one's sleeping habit. D Chinese students always complain that they’re under great pressure and don’t get enough sleep. But they may be surprised to learn that they’re much luckier than their peers (同龄人) in South Korea and Japan, according to a recently published report, conducted by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences on the physical and mental health of senior high school students in the three Asian countries. According to the study among nearly 6,000 high school students in the three countries, Chinese students are the tallest but poorest in physical fitness. Chinese students are on average 168.17cm, compared with 167.61cm for South Korean students and 164.70cm for Japanese students. Chinese students asked for sick leave more than students in other countries. About 72 percent of Korean students never asked for sick and injury leave during high school, compared to 53 percent for Japanese students and 45 percent for Chinese students. Moreover, Chinese students drink alcohol and smoke earlier than Korean and Japanese students. Around 70 percent of Chinese students have drunk alcohol, compared to 50 percent for Korean and Japanese students. According to the survey, Japanese and South Korean students suffer more pressure than their Chinese peers. Statistics show 16 percent of students in China said they experienced mental pressure often over the past year, while the numbers in Japan and South Korea were 33 percent and 47 percent respectively. Their worries come from “study”, “future after graduation”, “friendships” and “relationship with their parents”. To go with stress, 57.9 percent of Korean students sleep the least, less than six hours a day, compared with 46.6 percent of Japanese students and 30 percent of Chinese students. More Chinese students were satisfied with their physical appearance, double that of students in the survey from Japan and South Korea. The report said that over half of students in South Korea had tried to lose weight in the past year, while in China the figure was only 22 percent. In measures of self-worth, such as “I think I am valuable” and “I think I am successful”, “I can complete many things”, “I won’t give up to failure,” Chinese students showed greater self-confidence than students in Japan and South Korea. 32. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph? A. Chinese teenagers are tallest, but most unhealthy. B. Chinese students drink most alcohol and smoke earliest. C. Japanese students ask for least sick leave. D. Chinese students ask for sick leave most often. 33. It can be inferred from the passage that _________. A.
