You’ve located the country’s capital and one of Europe’s most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers. History This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe’s largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid’s most beautiful building. Inside the Royal Palace of Madrid, 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms. Art The internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Opened in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world’s most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings. Shopping Madrid has some of Europe’s best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as El Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs. Entertainment No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain’s famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike. Food Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 pm., it’s difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamon, a kind of dry-cured ham— Spain is famous for it. 21. What do we know about the Royal Palace of Madrid according to the passage? A. It has 50 rooms for visit. B. It can hold 2,800 people. C. It’s been visited by 3 million people. D. It is thought to be the largest in Europe. 22. What kind of market is “El Rastro”? A. For discount. B. For artworks. C. To sell various goods. D. To sell antiques and CDs. 23. What is recommended when travelling in Madrid? A. Having dinner earlier. B. Performing flamenco. C. Visiting Royal Museum. D. Drinking in a tapas bar. B We’re often reminded of the importance of preserving the planet as we see it for future generations—and children at St Oswald’s Primary School in Chester certainly agree. Nine-year-old Isobel Kelleher from the school’s Hummingbirds class thinks adults need to take note. “Sometimes they can be busy and I don’t think they think they can make a difference, but if everyone does a little bit, it all adds up,” she tells HuffPost UK. “We started looking at plastic pollution in our oceans and the things like plastic bags and broken down pieces of plastic that are polluting them.” she says. “Fish can eat the plastic and they can die, or we might even eat the fish ourselves.” Mr. Timms, Isobel’s teacher, has been spearheading a new project at the school which lets children loose creatively to raise awareness of the need to be more environmentally friendly. The entire Hummingbirds class, which is made up of 9and 10yearold pupils, has been busy writing poems and creating online video adverts to warn adults about the serious situation of our oceans and wildlife. Mr. Timms thinks children have an important role to play in teaching us how to take care of the things around us. “We sometimes overlook how much we can really learn from children.” he says. “It has been really hard to believe having parents come in saying that their children have been asking them to stop using plastic, and to recycle more, and even stopping them using plastic straws.” Mr. Timms is proud of his Hummingbirds class. “The message that they would like to send to the world is simple: Stopping this isn’t someone else’s job, and it won’t be OK if we just leave it.” 24. What can we infer about adults according to Isobel Kelleher? A. They just pretend to be busy. B. They haven’t done their part well. C. They can do nothing to stop pollution. D. They have started to care about oceans. 25. What is the purpose of the school project? A. To help adults to learn more about their kids. B. To remind adults to be friendly to the environment. C. To persuade students to stop using plastic bags. D. To teach students how to write poems creatively. 26. Why does Mr. Timms mention “parents” in Paragraph 4? A. To prove kids are creative in teaching. B. To attract people to support his work. C. To have adults care about education. D. To show the effects of the project. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. An inspiring school project. B. An appeal to stop plastic bags. C. Serious situations of our planet. D. Adults’ ignorance of environment. C In the middle of the 19th century, a fever dream of riches beyond measure drew countless explorers west to the mountains of central California. Although the gold rush ended up being a bust for many who sought a fortune, some of those explorers discovered a natural treasure that would draw permanent settlers to Yosemite Valley in the following decade. Vast wilderness, beautiful mountains, countless waterfalls, and abundant wildlife drew Native Americans to Yosemite roughly 10,000 years ago. The first non-native tourists arrived in the mid-1850s after reports from gold seekers told of an area of breathtaking beauty that no words were able to describe. Fortunately, some of Yosemite’s earliest settlers recognized that Yosemite’s natural beauty and resources needed to be preserved for future generations. In the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed a grant to protect Yosemite permanently, thus making it the nation’s first land to be dedicated to recreation and setting the stage for what would become the national park system. One of Yosemite’s earliest ambassadors was ScottishAmerican naturalist and writer John Muir. After living in Yosemite for a few years, he helped define its proposed boundaries. He also wrote articles that helped lead to its official title as a national park in 1890. He later cofounded the Sierra Club in 1892 to advocate for its continued preservation and protection. Located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in central California, Yosemite National Park runs across nearly 748,000 acres, almost 95% of which is wilderness. Around four million visitors come to Yosemite each year to camp, hike its miles of trails, climb its rock formations, and photograph its impressive sights. Are you ready to visit Yosemite National Park? Which of Yosemite’s sights would you most like to experience? 28. Which of the following best explains “bust” underlined in Paragraph 1? A. Memory. B. Symbol. C. Failure. D. Challenge. 29. When did the first nonnative tourists come to Yosemite? A. After it was discovered by gold seekers. B. When the gold rush finally came to a stop. C. Before Native Americans found its beauty. D. When it became a national park in 1890. 30. What do we learn about John Muir? A. He was the first to build the national park. B. He helped set the boundaries of Yosemite. C. He wrote to collect money for Yosemite. D. He gave Yosemite an official name. 31. What do we know about Yosemite National Park? A. It has been well preserved since the Civil War. B. It was originally created to protect wild animals. C. It used to be wellknown for its manmade beauty. D. It was once damaged by some of its earliest settlers. D If you are taking vitamin supplements to reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer, a group of health experts want you to know that those vitamins may actually increase your risk of cancer. The US Preventive Services Task Force came to this conclusion after reviewing dozens of studies. Nearly half of adults in the US take at least one vitamin or mineral supplement on a regular basis. These pills are advertised as a way to promote general health. In some cases, manufacturers promote them as cancer fighters and heart protectors. Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes suggest that oxidative (氧化性的) stress contributes to diseases like cancer and heart disease. If so, there is a reason to believe that antioxidants—including beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and E—could be useful as preventive medicines. But when the Task Force examined the medical evidence on vitamins, it found “inadequate” evidence to support the claims that vitamin and mineral supplements benefit healthy adults. “Cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and cancer have a significant health impact in America, and we all want to find ways to prevent these diseases,”Dr. Virginia Moyer, who heads the Task Force, said in a statement. But the medical evidence does not show that taking vitamins is helpful in this regard. However, the Task Force did find “adequate evidence” that people with a raised risk for lung cancer actually increase their risk further by taking betacarotene, a precursor(前体) of vitamin A. The Task Force recommendations of taking vitamins regularly apply to healthy adults aged 50 and older who don’t have “special nutritional needs”. The advice does not apply to children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, people with chronic illnesses, or people who have to take supplements because they can’t get all their essential nutrients from their diet. 32. Studies in animals and in laboratory dishes find out ________. A. taking vitamins are helpful for treating lung cancer B. cardiovascular disease spreads very fast in America C. oxidative stress can lead to heart disease and cancer D. people must take vitamins on a regular basis 33. What can we conclude from the Task Force’s findings? A. Scientists want to control cardiovascular disease. B. In some regard, taking vitamins is not useful. C. Manufacturers cannot produce medical-use vitamins. D. Vitamins must be useful to prevent cancer and heart disease. 34. Who can take vitamins regularly according to the advice of the Task Force? A. A 60yearold healthy worker. B. A 15yearold boy with short-sightedness. C. A 34yearold pregnant lady. D. A 40yearold man who never eats vegetables or fruits. 35. What’s the best title for the text? A. An Inside Look at Vitamins B. The Task Force: Ending to Vitamins C. Vitamins: to Live or to Kill D. Taking Vitamins to Prevent Cancer May Fail 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Each of our experiences impacts us, either in a positive way or a negative way. Negative experiences can leave us in trouble and make us upset. However, positive experiences can greatly improve our daily motivation. 36 Here are some ways to increase your daily motivation and you can achieve so much more in your life: Having goals is vital. They are the key motivator that drives you to succeed. 37 Important and meaningful goals motivate you to take inspired action toward achieving what you desire and keep you focused and driven when you come across challenges and difficulties. 38 Breaking a goal down into small steps will prevent you becoming overwhelmed and help maintain a positive attitude to keep you moving forward. Life will be hard at times, but you should remember that these hard times are temporary. 39 Have daily inspiration to live life to the full and achieve all you can. A desire and motivation to live life to the full is the least you can give in return. 40 Your dreams and goals will never be realized unless you acquire a continuous drive and daily motivation to take inspired action that keeps you moving forward. A. Your mind is extremely powerful. B. Good times are always just around the corner for you. C. They help us achieve our goals and become better people. D. A life without goals is like a boat without a compass moving aimlessly. E. Feed your mind with positive thoughts and you will gain whatever you want. F. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm. My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising. I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt. On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot(鼻涕)frozen to his face, a wornout jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill. Paragraph 1: Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised._________________________________ Paragraph 2: On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. _________________ 英语试题答案 1-5 BCCBA 6-10 BABCA 11-15 CBABC 16-20 BACCA 21-23 ACD 24-27 BBDA 28-31 CABA 32-35 CBAD 36-40 CDFBG 41-45 BACDA 46-50 CDBBB 51-55 AACDB 56. and 57. traditional 58. to call 59. are 60. characters 61. telling 62. The performance will be put on at 3:00 pm this Sunday. I think it is a good chance for you to appreciate Chinese operas and it will satisfy your desire to learn more about Chinese culture. What I suggest is that we go to the library near the theater if you can come and have a dinner after we watch the opera. Without doubt, we will have a good time together. Looking forward to meeting you early. Yours, Li Hua One possible version: Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained that if we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. He didn’t have a home or food to eat after all. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt. On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside the window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I am doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else. 听力原文 Text 1 W: Your meeting is at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. M: OK, thanks. Well, did anyone call while I was out? W: Only your wife. She wants you to pick up some wine on your way home. Text 2 W: If you still can’t sleep well, you should go to the hospital. I can give you a ride. M: I just started a new job. My insurance doesn’t cover me until next month. Text 3 W: Where are we? I haven’t seen any road signs for miles, and there aren’t any houses, either. I think we took a wrong turn back there. M: Yeah, I think you’re right. Pull over to the side of the road, and I’ll take a closer look at the map. Text 4 M: That was expensive. I only got one dollar change. When I was young, even five dollars would have been a crazy price for an ice cream. W: You gave him ten dollars? Surely, he has made a mistake. Go back and ask. Text 5 M: Good morning, ma’am. Can I help you? W: Yes. I need this dress by Friday. It has a small stain on it, but I’m hoping you can get it out. Text 6 W: Daddy, why is the sky blue? M: Oh, honey…it’s a little hard to explain. There are things you don’t understand about science yet. W: Oh. I thought it was because the ocean is blue. The sky is always looking at the ocean, so it should be blue, too. M: That’s a very good idea, Ruby! That is very close to the real reason, too. The sky has a lot to do with the ocean. They’re related, in a way. Did you ever notice that they’re never exactly the same color? It’s just like you and your brother Peter. You look alike because you’re related, but you don’t look exactly the same. Text 7 W: Hi, I’m Alice. Is this your first day of college? M: I’m Chris. I’m actually just visiting the campus. This is my last year of high school, and I’m trying to choose a university. I got an offer from this school. My school fees will be paid if I come here… W: You must be really smart, then! Not a lot of people get full scholarships. M: I’m OK in school. The reason why I got the offer is that I’m a basketball player. W: I might have guessed that. You’re very tall! M: You should come to one of my games. Our first one is in two weeks. W: Thanks. I’ll think about it. The last time I went to a game, I got hit in the face with a ball. M: Was it a basketball game? W: No, it was a baseball game. I had to go to the hospital. Text 8 W: I’m trying to get a book published, but I don’t know how to begin. Should I call a publisher or try to advertise it myself? M: Maybe you should ask Mr. Wyatt. He knows a lot about the book industry. W: Good idea! I always loved his English classes. He’s the reason that I started writing! M: I’d like to read your book sometime though. How long is it? I usually just read books that are less than 200 pages. Remember that book Ulysses which we read in Mr. Wyatt’s class? That was over 700 pages! W: Oh yeah, that took forever to read. My book is not as thick as that. It’s probably about half that long. I won’t have an actually printed book to give you, at least for a few more months. The only others I have are computer files and my handwritten copies. M: Can you just give me a computer file? W: Yes. I’ll do that right away. If you are going to read it, I need your honest opinion though. It is the only way I can get better. Text 9 W: I read an interesting article the other day. It had a lot of data on how people get their news. Did you know that in the United States, only 5% of people get their news from the radio? M: That makes sense. I only listen to music on the radio. Are most people getting their news from the newspaper or television instead? W: Only 1% more people get it from newspapers, but most people get it from the Internet actually. M: Wow, really? I would have thought that people preferred getting news from the television. What about other countries? Are they the same? W: Well, the article spoke about a few countries. France, Germany and Italy actually have the highest rates of television news watchers. Of those in the study, Japan had the most newspaper readers. M: That is really interesting. I don’t think I know a single person our age who listens to radio news either. My grandparents and their generation are the ones who grew up with that. W: It’s amazing how our technology has changed many things about day to day life. I bet in one hundred years, people will get their news from something we can’t even dream of. Text 10 W: Good morning, students. These are your morning announcements for Monday, December 10th. The last of our midterm tests will be held this week from the 12th to the 14th. However, there has been a slight change to the dates and the places of the exams. Last year, the English exams were on Wednesday, the math exams on Thursday, and the history exams were held on Friday. This year the teachers have agreed, after listening to students’ suggestions, to switch the dates of the math and history exams. As for the places, please check the message board in the main hall, or ask your teachers for a schedule. Tomorrow, we will have a special guest coming to visit us just before our Christmas concert. As you know, one of our previous graduates won a gold medal in the last Olympics. He will be here to sign shirts and take pictures with students after an introduction by our P.E. teacher. Finally, the headmaster asks you to remind your parents to get here early for the concert. Although there will be enough seating in the gym, the parking lot gets full very quickly. That’s all for the announcements. Have a good week, everyone!查看更多
