Dear Jorge, ‎ Are you enjoying your break from school? My family are now in Sacramento, California. We are here paying a visit to my aunt Gloria. We have been to the California State Capitol Building, the nature center, and the zoo. I have seen many interesting things, but one stands out above the rest. This morning we drove from my aunt's home to Calistoga to see California's Old Faithful Geyser I had read about it in my book, Sightseeing in California: Where You Should Go. You have probably heard of Old Faithful, the geyser farther north in Yellowstone National Park. This California geyser is sometimes called “Little Old Faithful.”‎ When we arrived California's Old Faithful was only a calm pool of water. The geyser didn't look very deep. “What's the big deal?” I wondered. As I turned, I saw some steam rising from the water. Before I knew it, there was hot water shooting up about 60 feet into the air. We could not believe our eyes! It continued for almost three minutes.‎ Aunt Gloria told me that the water came from an underground river. She also said that the water temperature was about 95℃. This water can sometimes shoot 170 feet into the air.‎ My aunt said that other geysers around the world reach hotter temperatures and shoot water even higher than California's Old Faithful ‎ Geyser. I'd love to learn more about this geyser and other geysers in different countries when I get home. I'll see you soon!‎ Your friend,‎ Bennetto ‎ ‎1.According to the text, Bennetto ________.‎ A.visited his aunt Gloria by himself B.had never heard of Old Faithful Geyser C.thought nothing of Old Faithful Geyser at first D.flew all the way from Sacramento to Calistoga 解析:选C 细节理解题。由第二段中的“When we arrived California's ... I wondered.” ‎ ‎2.The water Bennetto saw high in the sky ________.‎ A.disappeared at once B.was too hot to touch C.came from a deep sea D.was 170 feet in height 解析:选B 细节理解题。由第二段中的“there was hot water ... into the air”和第三段中的“the water temperature was about 95℃”可知,喷出来的水温度很高,所以不能碰,故选B项。‎ ‎3.What was expressed in Bennetto's letter?‎ A.Anger. B.Doubt.‎ C.Courage. D.Excitement.‎ 解析:选D 推理判断题。由第二段中的“We could not believe our eyes!”和最后一段中的“I'd love to learn more ... when I get home.” ‎ ‎4.Bennetto wrote the letter mainly to ________.‎ A.talk about his holiday experiences B.ask Jorge to visit Old Faithful Geyser C.express his thankfulness to Aunt Gloria D.give Yellowstone National Park some advice 解析:选A 写作意图题。 ‎ B 话题 词数 建议用时 非洲的狩猎旅行 ‎309‎ ‎7分钟 ‎ We stood silently under the stars, just metres from our tent, hardly daring to breathe. Not far away stood four impala (黑斑羚). Did they know, as we did, that a leopard (豹子) lay under a bush?‎ She jumped. Four shadowy shapes jumped into the woods. Had the leopard made a successful kill? The whole scene had taken place too quickly, and in not enough light, for any of us to be sure. In fact, we had been on our way from the tent to the suppertime campfire. Half an hour later we had a tale to outdo most told around the fire. “This has got to be the best nightlife in the world,” answered my boy Toby, when some middleaged tourists asked him how he was enjoying his holiday.‎ So much for the lies of experts who doubted that safaris (游猎) would be workable for teenagers. True, this is a difficult age, with teens beginning to sense that they are too old for family holidays. But our kids didn't want to return to the kind of “teen clubs”. So, my wife and I thought, if we were going to have one really good family holiday, why not Africa?‎ Our holiday began with a flight to Arusha airport, then a long drive south. We chose to stay at Mdonya Old River Camp because this is one that avoids soft beds and towels, etc; these, to my mind can prevent us from connecting with nature. Instead, the five of us shared a simple tent at the edge of a driedup sand river.‎ If there was one disappointment about the wildlife viewing in Tanzania, it was that game drives are not allowed in any of the country's national parks after dark. But if anything, this made our nighttime meeting with the leopard and impala outside our tent even more special.‎ Our final trip was over to Zanzibar where we sailed out to a sandbank and watched a beautiful sunset. And we concluded that if there is one family holiday that will attract teens, it is a safari.‎ 语篇解读:本文是一篇记叙文。 ‎ ‎5.When they were sitting round the campfire, the family ________.‎ A.learned what happened in the end from other tourists B.were sorry about the death of four impala C.were proud of what they had seen earlier D.saw a leopard hiding under a bush 解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“we had a tale to outdo most told around the fire”和孩子说的“This has got to be the best nightlife in the world”可知,在营火旁边,作者一家所分享的他们之前遇到豹子的经历比别的露营者所讲的故事更精彩。 ‎ ‎6.The author and his wife decided on an African safari because they ________.‎ A.didn't want to be with other families B.wanted to do something different from usual C.were advised that teenagers often enjoy safaris D.wanted their children to learn some independence 解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But our kids didn't want to return to the kind of ‘teen clubs’.” ‎ ‎7.Why did the author choose Mdonya Old River Camp?‎ A.Because it was quite basic.‎ B.Because it wasn't easy to get to.‎ C.Because there was water nearby.‎ D.Because the tents were of good quality.‎ 解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“We chose to stay at Mdonya Old River Camp because ... the five of us shared a simple tent”可知,作者选择Mdonya Old River Camp是因为这个营地只有很基础的设施。‎ ‎8.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refer to?‎ A.The dark. B.The rule.‎ C.Their disappointment. 根据倒数第二段第一句中的“it was that game drives are not allowed in any of the country's national parks after dark”可知,在坦桑尼亚的任何一家国家公园都不允许天黑以后驱车游猎,也正是这一规定才使得作者一家那晚和豹子、黑斑羚的碰面更加特别。‎ Ⅱ.完形填空 ‎(2018·长春高三质检)What do a volunteer and a tourist have in common? __1__.
