Minu Pauline, who runs Pappadavada, has nicknamed the fridge, which was placed there on March 23 and is shaded by a neighboring tree, "tree of goodness".‎ The fridge is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and stays unlocked. Pauline asks that people write the date they left the food, so those who take know how long it's been there. But most food doesn't stay in the fridge for long. In spite of a huge response from the community and plenty of donations, the fridge needs to be brought more in to replace in time. Pauling herself adds around 75% to 80% of food from Pappadavada a day in the fridge.‎ The idea to put a fridge on the street came to Pauline late on night when she saw a lady searching in a dustbin for food. She was especially saddened because that particular night, her restaurant had made a ton of food that they could have easily given the woman, instead of her searching for it. She felt like she contributed to waste, and avoiding waste is what Pauline pays her attention to.‎ ‎"The only thing I want to say no is that people are actually buying food and putting it in the fridge. But I'd rather people put their food they bought but aren't going to eat in the fridge instead of the dustbin," she said.‎ ‎21.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A.A tree planted on March 23.‎ B.The fridge outside for the hungry to take from.‎ C.The popular restaurant in Kochi, India.‎ D.A neighboring tree near Pappadavada.‎ ‎22.What does the manager of the restaurant advise in the last paragraph?‎ A.People shouldn't throw foods into dustbin.‎ B.Everyone should always avoid waste.‎ C.People shouldn't buy food for that.‎ D.Everyone should help those in need.‎ ‎23.What is special about Minu Pauline?‎ A.She runs her restaurant in a different way.‎ B.She saves food and helps others in a wise way.‎ C.She sets a higher standard to deal with waste.‎ D.She makes the community more friendly to each other.‎ B ‎ The English language is changing, and you are responsible! Whether we consider changes in grammar, spelling, pronunciation, or the very vocabulary of the language, you have played your part and continue to do so.‎ When we first learned basic grammar and spelling, perhaps in elementary school, we might have gotten the impression that these things were sacred. The rules that apply to such things might have been presented as unchanging and unchangeable. While this approach might be beneficial for teaching children, it is far from accurate.‎ The English language, like many others, is a living, growing, ever-evolving thing. Like it or not, you are involved in this change. These changes take many forms. Grammar and spelling have changed radically over the years and centuries, with the spelling differences in different countries today a reflection of this. While the language of a thousand years ago might be called English, most of us would hardly recognize it today as the same language.‎ The first involves changes in the pronunciation of words. Many are familiar with the differences between the British and American ways of pronouncing certain words. In addition to these differences, the pronunciation of many words has changed over the years because of how you have decided to pronounce them. For example, consider the word "err." The traditional pronunciation of this word rhymes with the word "her." However in recent years, more and more people have been pronouncing it so that it sounds like "air."‎ Another change in the language involves the addition and removal of words. The makers of dictionaries decide which words deserve to be officially adopted as part of the English language. Through the centuries, many words have come from other languages. In fact, English has probably done this more than any other language in the world, which is why spelling and pronunciation rules for English have so many exceptions.‎ Of course many slang words have been just short-lived fads that have died out quickly.‎ ‎ Others, though, have been adopted by mainstream society and become respectable, as have many technical terms. So then remember, the next time you repeat the newest expression to hit the street, or make up your own words, you may be contributing to the future of the English language.‎ ‎24.When we begin to learn English, we think .‎ A.it is interesting to take up a new language B.grammar and spelling rules are unchangeable C.only grown-ups have the ability to affect a language D.English rules are wrongly presented in fact ‎25.The pronunciation of words are changing because .‎ A.people speak in different ways B.the British don’t agree with others C.people adopted foreign words D.makers of dictionaries created them ‎26.Which of the following statement about English slang words is True?‎ A.All the slang words have become standard English.‎ B.English slang words are popular for a short time.‎ C.Some slang words have been accepted.‎ D.English slang words have different meanings actually.‎ ‎27.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?‎ A.You can change the English language.‎ B.English is changing over years.‎ C.The British speaks differently from Americans.‎ D.Foreign words involved in English.‎ C ‎ Catalin Baciu from Romania wanted to make money in Germany. So, he and his wife, Oltita went to Bucharest, the capital city of Romania to get legal papers to move to Germany. However, when they arrived, they were surprised by what they saw. “Hundreds of street children were living in a busy and dirty city of two and a half million people. Many of them were using drugs. They all seemed lost. Most of them were under ten years old. Oltita had tears in her eyes,” Catalin said.‎ Many of these streets children were orphans (孤儿). Many of the children even became involved with crime and violence (暴力).‎ The Baciu’s did not like the sight of so many pitiful children in Bucharest. They wanted to leave immediately and go to Germany. However, that night, Catalin and Oltita stayed with a friend in Buchares. “The friend we were staying with was working with street children. I was deeply touched by what he and his fellows were trying to do…they were sacrificing (牺牲) their jobs and lives to save street children,” Catalin said.‎ After that visit, the Baciu’s completely changed their life plan. Instead of moving to Germany, they began working with street children in Bucharest. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can' t fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors ‎ might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.‎ Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.‎ Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain' s temperature was 10°C, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again.
