His art and talent were recognized by almost no one. He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time. Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The Van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life. Others are interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art. Van Gogh was the son of the mister. He left school when he was just 15. By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art. Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes (绘画笔法). “Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he wrote in a letter to his brother in 1888. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. His portrait of Dr. Gacher sold for US DS 89.5 million in 1990. It is the highest price ever paid for a painting. “I think his paintings are powerful and the brilliant color in them are attractive to people,” said a Van Gogh’s fan. 24. A.his powerful art came from his poor life B.his fellow townsmen regret treating him unfairly C.all his paintings were drawn in the last 10 years of his life D.most of his paintings are kept in the museum of his hometown C The mom had died when the rescuers found her after the terrible earthquake. She was covered by a destroyed house. Through gaps(缝隙)of those ruins, the rescuers could see her last posture. It was something like an ancient person who was kowtowing(叩头),but it just looked strange because she was out of shape by pressure. The rescuers confirmed her death by touching her through the gaps of the ruins. They shouted at the ruins again and again, knocked the bricks using various tools, but no reply inside. Then the rescuing team went to the next building. Suddenly the leader ran back, calling, “Come here.” He came to the body, put his hands under the woman, feeling and touching, then shouted loudly and gladly, “There is someone,a baby, still living.” Through some efforts, rescuers cleaned up the ruins which blocked her. Under her body lay her baby, who was covered by a small red quilt. He was about 3 or 4 months’ old. Since well protected by his mother’s body,he was safe. He was in a deep sleep when the rescuer carried him out,and his lovely and peaceful face warmed everyone around him. The doctor, along with the rescuing team, took the baby out of the quilt to check if the baby was all right, and he found there was a mobile phone in the quilt. The doctor looked at the screen; a written message was already there:“My dear baby,if you could live, don’t forget how much I love you.” As a doctor, he experienced much of this type of separation;but at this moment, he cried. The mobile phone was passed, and every person who saw this message shed tears. 28. When the rescuers found the mom, she A. was using her mobile phone to ask for help. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory. Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(声称)as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away. If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away. Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs. You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories. 32. Some scientists believe that most of the time birds’ singing is actually ______. A. an expression of happiness B. an expression of anger C. a way of greeting D. a way of warning 33. How does the writer explain birds’ singing? A. By comparing birds with human beings. B. By telling a bird’s story. C. By reporting experiment results. D. By describing birds’ daily life. 34. What is a bird’s “territory”? A. An area for which birds fight against each other. B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice. C. An area which a bird considers to be its own. D. A place where families of other species are not accepted. 35. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season? A. Because they want to find outsiders around. B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away. C. Because they want to invite more friends. D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Are you satisfied with your life? How often do you think of reasons why everyone around you is successful though they are not usually better than you? What do you do wrong? Here are some things you should stop doing to be successful. •36 Different people may interpret “success” in different ways:some of them measure it in money, other ones in positive changes to people around them and the world.37 And do not worry about what other people think, and come after what makes you happy. •Do not believe anything without questioning it. 38They are critical thinkers, and they understand that we are all ruled by our prejudices;so,they will always question new information. •Do not worry about all unpredictable things that may happen to you.
