Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.     I got a rescue call from a woman in Mutton town. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to-3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.     I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.     The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.     Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.     A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner ‎ called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all—LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.‎ 21. What made the chick calm down?‎ A. A new nest. B. Some food. C. A recording. D. Its parents.‎ ‎27. How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?‎ A. It's unexpected. B. It's beautiful. C. It's humorous. D. It's discouraging.‎ C Many people find that music lifts their spirits. Now a new study shows that music therapy can be a useful treatment for depression.‎ The finding that music therapy offers a real medical benefit to depression sufferers comes from a review by Cochrane, a non-profit group that reviews health care issues. Some studies looked at the effects of providing music therapy to patients who were receiving drug treatment for depression. Others compared music therapy to traditional talk therapy. In four out of five of the trails, music therapy worked better at easing depression symptoms than therapies that did not employ music, the researchers found. ‎ ‎“ While the evidence came from a few small studies, it suggests that this is an area that is well worth further investigation,” said lead author Anna Maratos. Ms. Maratos notes that music therapy might be particularly useful for adolescents who may reject a traditional form of counseling (咨询). Some older patients also may not be comfortable talking about their feelings but do tend to express themselves through songs. ‎ There are two main types of music therapy. Sometimes, a therapist will listen to music with a patient and talk about the feelings or memories that it arouses. In another form, the therapist is a skilled musician and will improvise (即兴创作) music with the patient. If the patient doesn’t play an instrument, he or she might be given a simple percussion instrument (打击乐器) and the therapist will play along. ‎ Other studies have shown a benefit from music therapy in the treatment for dementia, learning disabilities, strokes and pain management during labor (分娩). The problem is that there isn’t very much high-quality research. “ It doesn’t easily attract serious research funding. It’s difficult to do high-quality, large-scale trials,” said Ms. Maratos. ‎ 28. Which of the following treatments is NOT mentioned in the research?‎ A. Drug treatment B. Talk therapy C. Music therapy D. Play therapy 28. What’s the attitude of Anna Maratos to music therapy?‎ A. Positive B. Negative C. Indifferent D. Neutral ‎ 29. According to the passage, music therapy might not be beneficial to a patient of______.‎ A. depression B. learning disabilities C. heart attacks D. Strokes 30. We can learn from the passage that____________.‎ A. a middle-aged patient won’t benefit from music therapy ‎ B. patients using music therapy must be able to play an instrument ‎ C. only patients suffering from depression benefit from music therapy D. high-quality research on the effects of music therapy is limited by funding ‎ D Empathy (同感) is one of those strange qualities-something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it. In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.‎ What is empathy? Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are different. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone’s feelings; criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently gaining their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, respect, and understanding. ‎ Kids need to see adults show empathy. While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy displayed by the adults around them. It begins with the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy. ‎ Meeting emotional needs. When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give something to others when the need arises but first they need to receive something. An empty jug cannot fill a cup.‎ It’s a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotions names (for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal. Talk to them about how to handle emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions. Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a response is required. ‎ 31. Why are the next generation taught to have empathy?‎ A. People tend to be self-centered.‎ B. Everyone needs empathy. ‎ C. Empathy is a strange quality. ‎ D. It’s better to give than to receive. ‎ 32. Which situation can empathy be used in? ‎ A. When a mathematician is calculating the area of farmland. ‎ B. When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams.‎ C. When a criminal is cheating a victim. ‎ A. When a dancer is dancing to music. ‎ 28. What does the underlined sentence “An empty jug cannot fill a cup” mean? ‎ A. An empty jug is too small to hold a cup.‎ B. It’s a must to talk to kids about emotions.‎ C. Adults should set an example to kids.‎ D. Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first. ‎ 29. What is the best title of the passage?‎ A. How to train kids to have empathy.‎ B. How to distinguish sympathy and empathy. ‎ C. How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks. ‎ D. Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic. ‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Words have great power. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Many of us have been offended by words and know how badly words hurt.    36   . Trust me if you are not careful in this area, your emotions will soon be controlled by the words of the people around you.‎ ‎●    37   .‎ If someone tells you “You are a fool”, don’t believe it in your mind. People who hurt you can never really harm you unless you allow yourself to be defined by these words. You are a pretty good child. You are very valuable in the sight of your parents, so never allow yourself to feel inferior just by the words of other people.‎ ‎●  Turn those words into positive thoughts within you.‎ If there is something wrong with your actions, and others are trying to correct you, it can sometimes hurt your feelings if their words are hurtful.    38   . Think like this in your mind, “Yes, I’m wrong, but I’ll find ways to improve. Now I have hope because I know I can change.” ‎ ‎●  Respond softly.‎ If someone speaks in a hurtful way, take a deep breath first and try to speak softly and kindly in response.    39   . On the contrary, an angry answer is like a sword, which will bring harm instead of healing.  ‎ ‎●  Be silent.‎ ‎   40   . It’s none of your business. We need not respond to every personal comment from people. It’s not your problem that they keep on hurting you on purpose. So simply leave it.‎ A. A soft answer turns away anger.‎ B. Don’t worry about what others say.‎ C. It is wise to correct others’ mistakes by soft words.‎ D. Never let negative words of others define who you are.‎ E. In that case change those words into positive thoughts. ‎ F. If someone is purposefully hurting you for no reason, simply be silent and ignore it.‎ G. Today I will share a few tips on how to handle the effect of negative words spoken to you. ‎ 第三部分 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ Growing up is not always easy.
