I think it will be a good idea to learn now, because I have plenty of free time and I have earned a little money to pay for lessons. I never learnt when I lived in the UK, so luckily driving on the “wrong” side isn’t a problem.‎ However, there are a lot of rules to remember. When you see a road to your right and there are no white lines on the ground, the cars to your right have the right to go before your car and you have to stop for them. In practice, lots of people forget this and either wait for each other while both drivers try to remember what to do, or beep (鸣喇叭) at each other if both try to go at the same time!‎ When you drive round a roundabout, you should check all your mirrors. To remember how to ‎ do this, I often count them aloud—one, two, three—then a second glance at my blind spot when I’m in the roundabout. One friend came driving with me and after about an hour asked why on earth I was counting. He had passed his test so long ago,but he couldn’t remember ever having to check three mirrors!‎ Driving still seems scary to me so I drive quite slowly. I also don’t know the countryside roads very well and don’t know what’s coming up round the corner or over the next hill. I drive slowly so I feel safe, but my driving instructor tells me to speed up or cars will bump into me from behind when trying to drive through a dangerous place. So driving slowly is just as dangerous as driving fast!‎ I’m not a very practical person, so learning to drive has been a challenge. I don’t have a lot of confidence and find it quite demotivating to do something that doesn’t come naturally to me. To make driving more fun and interesting, I learn in Swiss German, so my instructor gives me instructions in Swiss. This way I’ve tricked myself into enjoying driving and hopefully I will pass the test!‎ ‎21.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?‎ A.It isn’t a proper time for the author to take driving lessons now.‎ B.Driving on the “wrong” side doesn’t influence the author.‎ C.The author is too poor to pay for driving lessons in Switzerland.‎ D.It is easy for the author to get confused about the driving rules in Switzerland.‎ ‎22.Why does the author often counts “one, two, three” aloud when driving round a round about?‎ A.to remind himself to check the mirrors B.to speed up C.to drive through a dangerous place D.to make driving more interesting ‎23.What does the underlined word “demotivating” in the last paragraph mean?‎ A.Encouraging. B.Amazing. C.Exciting. D.Discouraging.‎ B Guana was born from a family with 7 children. His parents had two jobs to make ends meet and struggled to pay for basic expenses. Guana was once a cleaner at a school but now he is a superintendent(教育学监), leading the Byron Union School District in rural northern California.‎ Guana always remembers when he wanted to give up, someone would encourage him. One ‎ was the cleaner at his school when he was a boy. He called her “Nike” because she wore Nike shoes. Guana wanted those kinds of shoes, too, but his parents could not afford them. Young Gauna liked how Nike made everything so clean. He told her he wanted to be a cleaner, too. Nike said, “it’s good if you want to be a cleaner, but make sure that you go to college and make this as one of your steps there.”‎ Guana also looked up to the principal(校长), the leader at his school. He was a tall, friendly and good-looking man. He told Guana about his job helping students and teachers. And he said, “Well if you don’t give up, you’ll get there.” Guana did get there, and two men remain friends. But before Guana became a school principal, he followed in Nike’s footsteps and become a cleaner. He worked for three schools in Lodi, California, which helped him earn the money needed for his first two years of college. He earned a high-level university education and gained a doctor’s degree. Then he worked as a campus safety officer, teacher, counselor, administrator, and now superintendent.‎ Even though Guana has had a successful career, he never forgets where he came from, or how he felt. He uses his life experiences to guide him as a leader.‎ For example, Guana’s younger sister needs a wheelchair to get around. To this day, her disability helps him as a school administrator to help and support special children. In Guana’s school system today, everyone is important and invited to parties and events.‎ ‎24.What made Guana have the idea to become a cleaner?‎ A.He appreciated Nike’s excellent cleaning work.‎ B.He wanted to buy Nike shoes with his efforts.‎ C.He planned to work to support his poor family.‎ D.He was eager to earn money to go to college.‎ ‎25.What is the third paragraph mainly about?‎ A.How Guana overcame the difficulties.‎ B.How Guana received the doctor’s degree.‎ C.How Guana became a leader from a cleaner.‎ D.How Guana got help from the previous principal.‎ ‎26.Why did the author mention Guana’s sister in the last paragraph?‎ A.To tell us that Guana was a kind and considerate man.‎ B.To encourage us to help those in need like Guana.‎ C.To inform us that Guana’s sister had such a difficult life.‎ D.To show Guana’s experiences were beneficial to his success.‎ ‎27.What can we learn from the text?‎ A.Strike while the iron is hot. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.‎ C.A friend in need is a friend indeed. D.Great minds think alike.‎ C While every dog owner knows their dogs can read their moods perfectly, scientists have always been a little doubtful. Now thanks to some researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, we finally have some convincing evidence.‎ For this study, biologist Corson Miller and his team exposed eleven selected dogs to digital images of women that were either angry or happy. Half the dogs were rewarded for touching the screen when shown a happy face, while the other half were given their treat for selecting those that appeared angry.‎ Interestingly, the dogs were not provided with the entire face. Some dogs were shown only upper halves while the others observed lower halves. That’s because the scientists believe humans show their eruptions on their entire face.‎ After some training on how to recognize small differences like the wrinkles between the eyes or the changes in their shape that accompany the happy or angry expressions, the dogs were mostly able to identify the correct expression not only on a familiar face but on a strange face, the researchers concluded the dogs were smart enough to read human emotions.‎ They also found those being trained to read angry expressions took a longer time to learn. They guess it may be because dogs find angry faces disgusting, causing them to back away quickly. However, once the smart dogs realized they were getting rewarded, the trepidation seemed to disappear. In fact, the dogs had such a good time playing the computer “game” that scientists had a hard time keeping them away from the touch screens after the study was completed.‎ The researchers also noticed only dogs with a male owner had a harder time understanding the expressions correctly. Since the touched screen models were all females, this confirmed what had been observed in previous studies—dogs are more efficient at reading facial expressions of ‎ people that are the same gender as their owner.‎ ‎28.How did the scientists conduct the experiment?‎ A.By mixing the selected dogs together.‎ B.By rewarding only half of the dogs touching the screen.‎ C.By leaving dogs to women who are either happy or angry.‎ D.By showing digital pictures of women’s happy or angry faces.‎ ‎29.What is the meaning of the underlined word “trepidation” in Paragraph 5?‎ A.fear and hesitation B.doubt and uncertainty C.curiosity and eagerness D.excitement and happiness ‎30.According to the last paragraph, dogs with female owners ________.‎ A.are scared away at the male faces B.can only read the expressions on partial faces C.are uninterested in telling facial expressions D.have difficulty telling the moods on the faces of males ‎31.What is the best title for this passage?‎ A.Dogs and Their Owners B.Dogs’ Mood Research C.Dogs Identify the Moods D.Mood Changes Influence Dogs D There is a test for you. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness (意识) is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering these questions.‎ Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But differences that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb (麻木的)to new stimulation (刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.‎ The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One cold night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they ‎ unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring (泉水). Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.‎ Another block to awareness is the obsession (痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides to check its name, and said, a “ruby-crowned kinglet”. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.‎ The pressures of “time” and “destination (目的地)” are further blocks to awareness. I met many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.‎ Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this way and you will open a new dimension (维度) to your life.‎ ‎32.According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more ____________.‎ A.sensitive to others’ feelings B.anxious to do wonders C.likely to develop unpleasant habits D.eager to explore the world around them ‎33.What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3?‎ A.To avoid jumping to conclusions. B.To stop complaining all the time.‎ C.To follow the teacher’s advice. D.To admit mistakes honestly.‎ ‎34.The bird watchers’ behavior shows that they __________.‎ A.are really attracted by nature B.are very patient in their observation C.care only about the names of birds D.question the field guides ‎35.Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?‎ A.The natural beauty isn’t attractive to them.‎ B.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.‎ C.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.‎ D.They are eager to see the rare animals at the destination.‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2 分, 满分 10 分)‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, ‎ 选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ As long as there have been exams, students have found ways to cheat.
