He goes out by himself and picks up plastic bottles, plastic bags and pieces of paper everywhere. He does it all carefully and never complains. The children in the nearby school are probably responsible for some of that litter. “There will come a time when they know better,” he said. “It’s just not yet. So, I’ll do it for them.” Well, this morning I was out walking my neighbor’s dog when I saw another neighbor, a much younger man, out doing the same thing! He had his two little sons with him and they were having good fun trying to pick up the litter. When I commented on what a good job he was doing, he said, “Well, an older fellow in our street does this. And my friend and I thought it wasn’t fair that he had to do it all the time, so now we take turns.” Not only was he taking a turn, not only did he have a friend join in as well, but he was passing on the lesson to the next generation! By the time I had returned the dog to my neighbor I looked again and his children’s friends had joined in! This man was teaching a whole group of young children to keep their own street tidy. An older man had set an example for him and now he was passing it on — the next generation is doing what he did and the generation to come after that! 21. The younger man did the same thing as the old gentleman because _____. A. it was his turn B. it was interesting for him C. he wanted to share the job with the old man D. he wanted to pass it on to his children 22. From the text, we can infer that the author _____. A. called on readers to protect the environment B. felt sorry for not giving a hand to the old man C. believed more people would join in the cleaning D. thought it unfair for the old man to do the cleaning alone 23. What can we learn from the text? A. No pains, no gains. B. Like father, like son. C. Two heads are better than one. D. The power of example is endless. B Every year gray whales swim a 10,000 miles round-trip, from the cold waters near Alaska, down the coast of North America to the warm waters near Mexico, and back again. It is one of the longest migrations (迁徙) of any mammal. All day, all summer long, in the cold waters near Alaska, gray whales eat and eat. Instead of teeth, gray whales have baleen (鲸须) they use to get food from ocean water. They get big mouthfuls of muck (淤泥) from the ocean floor, then push that muck right back out through their baleen. The mucky water flows through, but tiny animals get trapped in the baleen and licked up. When the water starts to freeze, the whales begin their long trip south. They swim night and day, without stopping to eat or rest. During the long journey, migrating whales may push their heads out of the water to see where they are. Two months later, the whales reach Mexico. Babies are born here in warm, shallow (浅的) waters called lagoons (濒海湖). Ocean lagoons have no food for the adults, but the babies are safer here than in the open seas. All winter the babies grow big and strong. In spring first the dads and teenagers leave the lagoons, then the moms with babies. Migrating gray whales swim close to shore, especially moms with babies. The ice is melting up north, and it’s time for the hungry whales to make the long journey back to their summer feeding grounds. 24. The underlined phrase “licked up” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_____”. A. given up B. ended up C. broken up D. eaten up 25. During their long journey to Mexico, gray whales _____. A. always swim under the ocean B. find food to supply their energy C. face the colder and colder water D. travel to the lagoons without a break 26. Where do mother gray whales give birth? A. In warm shallow waters near Mexico. B. Off the coast of North America. C. In the open seas near Mexico. D. In cold waters near Alaska. 27. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about gray whales in the text? A. How long they live. B. How they get their food. C. When they get back to Alaska. D. How long they spend traveling to Mexico. C If you’ve never bought organic food, you might be wondering what’s so special about it. Is it really better for you? How does that work? This text will give you a short introduction to the subject. Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides (insect and bug killers) and many people buy it because they think it’s better for their health. Whether that’s true or not is still debated, but there are lots of other reasons for organic food. Intensive agriculture (集约型农业) gives us cheap and plentiful food, but it’s also one of the biggest sources of environmental pollution. According to a report by the World Resources Institute, half of all the chemical fertilizers ever produced have been used since 1984. Fertilizers — and the much more deadly pesticides and herbicides (weed killers) used with them — finally find their way into rivers and seas. Sometimes they break down harmlessly, but they’re just as likely to build up in creatures that eat them (including humans). Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is one way to help reduce the problem. Many people find it puzzling that organic products are more expensive. After all, you’re doing away with expensive chemicals ... so shouldn’t they be cheaper? Organic farming is typically a more labor-intensive(劳动密集型) way of farming and that’s why it costs more. As a responsible (有责任的) consumer, it’s up to you to decide where to put your money. Are you happy to buy products that may have been grown in a harmful way? Are you willing to pay more to buy organic products that may help to protect the environment? 28. Which of the following does the author agree on? A. Organic food is better for people’s health. B. Organic food is better for the environment. C. Organic food tastes better than traditional food. D. Organic food can be produced in great amounts. 29. The underlined words “doing away with” in the last paragraph can best be replaced by “______”. A. making use of B. getting rid of C. keeping away from D. taking advantage of 30. What’s the author’s attitude towards organic food? A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Worried. D. Supportive. D There was once a man who penned comics under the name Stan Lee. This man originally wished to leave comics behind and write serious literature. But he never made that career change. Born Stanley Martin Lieber in 1922 in New York City, he has contributed more to the world than just a few fun stories. At 17, Lee began working as an assistant for the Timely comics group (today’s well-known Marvel Comics). Two years later he was given a chance to write for his first comic, “Captain America”. His skills in the business led him to become the comic-book division’s editor-in-chief until 1972. After working with comics for many years, Lee became tired of the material he was told to write. For a long time, comic books were considered silly stories. The characters weren’t complex, and the dialogue was short and simple. Lee wanted more from his work. The Fantastic Four was born after his wife asked, “Why don’t you write one book the way you would like to do it?” With that comic, Lee helped change comics from simple action stories to the complex narratives (叙述文) they are today. However, he still wasn’t done changing the industry. In the early 1960s, Stan Lee and another writer created the Spider-Man character. In one edition of Spider-Man, Lee wrote a story in which the superhero’s friend almost dies from drug abuse. From the 1950s until 2011, comic publishers followed the rules given by the Comics Code Authority (CCA), who disapproved of drug use in comics. But Lee published the comic without CCA’s agreement. The story sold, and there was a positive response to the story’s focus on a serious problem in society. The CCA ended up changing its rules to allow more inspirational stories like this. From this victory, Lee went on to create more interesting and realistic characters that dealt with both super and real life problems. 31. The underlined part “that career” in Paragraph 1 refers to the job as _____. A. a superhero B. a comic actor C. a comic book creator D. a serious literature writer 32. When was Captain America written by Stan Lee? A. In 1939. B. In 1941. C. In 1960. D. In 1972. 33. When The Fantastic Four was created, what happened to the comic industry? A. Spider-Man was published. B. Stan Lee left the comic industry. C. Stan Lee’s wife began to work on comics. D. The comics began to tell complex stories. 34. What can we know from the text? A. Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee himself. B. Stan Lee likes to discuss social issues in his comics. C. The story of Spider-Man came from Stan Lee’s friend. D. The CCA has been carrying out rules without changing them. 35. What would be the best title for the text? A. The man behind the superheroes B. What made comics popular? C. The first comic book D.
