The seven-year-old little wire-haired Dachshund, who now lives with her mom in Santa Rosa, was rescued from a cage at a pet store in Japan. She loves to eat and steal and hide her owner’s belongings. The good news is that the new family loves her and is even trying to get her sight restored. ‎ Of course, while these dogs have found loving families, there are many dogs that are hot as fortunate. I travelled to Oxford, England to take a Shakespeare course at Oxford University. Two of the best aspects about the program were that I completed a full year course in one month, and that as the course was taught by an instructor from my university. I didn’t have to worry about transferring credits(转学分)!‎ Completing a full year course in one month was intensive(强度大的). Even though I was overseas, I wasn’t on vacation. There was a lot of work to do, just like in a regular course: readings, assignments, a mid-term; and an exam. But it was an enriching experience because I got to see the material I was studying brought to life. Studying abroad allowed me to experience integrated(综合的) learning. I got to see plays at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. I love reading Shakespeare, and being able to see his works in action was great for my learning because it allowed me to understand the material better.‎ The Summer Abroad program is, of course, mainly centered around academics. However, there was time for fun and time to explore. Classes were on Monday to Thursday mornings, so that Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were left as free time although there was a lot of studying to do during those hours! Some people took trips to different countries within Europe because travelling is much cheaper there. I chose to spend a few days in London, exploring the typical tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. ‎ Studying abroad was an amazing experience, and I made some new friendships that will last a lifetime. ‎ ‎29. It was rewarding.‎ D An eco-friendly Danish company has come up with a new product—plantable pencils, as a way of highlighting the concept of sustainability(可持续性). The creations made by Danish company Sprout focus on things you can recycle and plant like pencils, cards and stickers. ‎ Their plantable pencils are one of their hot products. As the name suggests, plantable pencils are fitted with a small capsule at the end that contains seeds. Michael Stausholm, Sprout’s chief manager, says once the pencil is too short to use, it can be planted in soil instead of being thrown away. “It shows people—kids, grownups—in a very easy way what sustainability is all about. Don’t just use things and throw them away. Use things, and then use them for something else. In this case, we give it new life. ”‎ The seeds inside the capsules range from flowers to herbs and fruiting plants. The ‎ botanist says they are testing out more varieties, especially those difficult to grow in cooler northern European homes to ensure their pencils contain the best possible variety of a particular seed. ‎ Stausholm said, “People seem to really love the eco pencil and the fact that it has so many practical uses. I also think the fact that it is 100 per cent sustainable and is handmade from only natural materials makes it more appealing. ‎ Sprout now sells between 300,000 and 400,000 pencils a month. IKEA, Disney, Pepsi, and Bank of America, as well as public bodies and citizens, are all on Sprout’s customer list. ‎ They are also developing small waterproof boxes called “Tiny Gardens”, targeted at people who don’t want to keep soil in the kitchen. ‎ Though some are ignoring their importance when it comes to longer term sustainability, Stausholm says the plantable products can still make an impact. “We don’t think that we save the planet at all, but it’s a small thing, it’s the small things that we do in our everyday lives, step by step. We can all make a difference in the way we think when we consume.”‎ ‎33. What’s special about the plantable pencil?‎ A. It can grow into different plants. ‎ B. It can be made into different seeds. ‎ C. It can be planted in special soil. ‎ D. It can be kept in waterproof boxes. ‎ ‎34. What can we learn from the passage?‎ A. Many students, unaware of their wasting of food, bought much more than they could eat and even threw the leftovers without a second thought. But encouragingly, knowing the significance of saving food after the campaign, more and more students are beginning to buy a proper amount of food. ‎ ‎ Personally, it is of great benefit to join in the campaign and form a good habit of clearing the plate. And it is essential to start with ourselves and start from now. ‎ ‎ I’m looking forward to having your opinions of the campaign.‎ Yours, Li Hua 附:听力录音材料 ‎1. W: Oh, no! I'm going to be in trouble with Mr. Jones if I’m late again. Excuse me. Have you been waiting here long?‎ M: No, I’ve only been here a few minutes. The last bus was just leaving when I arrived, so we'll probably just have to wait three minutes for the next one.‎ ‎2. M: Can you help me? But I can't seem to get out of this building. I push the button for “1” on the elevator, but it takes me to a big dark room.‎ W: That's where we store our old books. Try the second floor for the parking lot. ‎ ‎3. W: Did you put John to bed yet? He’s been so tired lately.‎ M: No, but it's Friday night. And I don't think he's tired. He is out playing with his friends, like any normal kid. Let’s give him another few minutes.‎ ‎4. M: Did you finish reading the report yet? I can't send it until you give me your opinion.‎ W: I have enough to do! Why can't you do your own work and stop bothering me?‎ ‎5. M: This is a very nice restaurant you have here. The lighting gives it a really lovely atmosphere. It’s a great place for a romantic meal or a business meeting. ‎ W: Actually, we are planning to put in different lighting next month. The restaurant will have a brighter and more family-friendly feel when it’s all finished.‎ ‎6. M: May I help you?‎ W: Yes, I was trying to log in to the patient website, but it seems that I need an email from you.‎ M: Did you register when you were in the clinic today?‎ W: Register? I don't know what you mean. ‎ M: Did you give them your email address? ‎ W: Well, I did four years ago, and again two years ago, but I never got an email from the doctor's office after that. And I went in today for a checkup, but nobody seemed to remember me. ‎ M: Oh, I’m sorry about that. Why don't you give me your email address? I’ll help you get everything set up.‎ ‎7. W: Did you check out the reviews for the new movie this weekend, or were you too busy grading papers?‎ M: I saw the reviews, but I don't always agree with the movie experts. I'd rather be my own judge. I don't need their opinions. ‎ W: Yeah, but they make a living by doing what they do. If someone spends most of their life doing a certain thing, doesn't that make them an expert in it? ‎ M: I’ve heard that argument before. But based on that logic, I’m an expert in eating.‎ W: That's a bit ridiculous. Do you write columns for the newspaper on food? Have you studied the arts of cooking?‎ M: True, but I don’t use my personal judgment to influence others, either. ‎ ‎8. W: Bill! How’ve you and Sandy been doing? I haven't seen you around the neighborhood recently.‎ M: We're fine. We’ve been busy with our new project.‎ W: What is it this time?‎ M: We’re building a tiny house. We’re reducing costs, actually. ‎ W: Why would you want a smaller place to live? Your place is perfect. ‎ M: We think it's too much for one family. ‎ W: That's crazy. What will you do with all your things? And how will you live without comfortable furniture, books, entertainment systems, and all the necessities of modern life?‎ M: I don't think those things are really needed. At the end of the day, you just need a bed to sleep in and a chair to sit on. We’re selling almost everything we own now. ‎ W: And Sandy went along with this?‎ M: Well, it took some discussion, but she understands now.‎ ‎9. M: Why did you get home so late, Sara? I was worried sick!‎ W: I had everything timed perfectly. I sat in the coffee shop, waiting for Bus 55. It is supposed to leave at 4: 45 sharp. I take it every day at that time.‎ M: And you lost track of time, didn't you?‎ W: No, Ken, not this time. I was at the bus stop on time, and I was picking up my bag and getting to my feet at 4: 35. I was two feet from the bus when it suddenly left! ‎ M: Ten minutes early?‎ W: Yes. By then, there were no more buses leaving from Waterson. ‎ M: How did you get here, then?‎ W: I walked. Can you imagine---me, a young woman, walking in the dark for an hour by herself?‎ M: And in this neighborhood! Next time, please call me. That was so dangerous.‎ W: I know. I’m lucky to be alive. What’s wrong with the public transportation in this city? Don’t they care about people who can’t afford cars? ‎ M: We should write a letter to our local officials.‎ W: And the newspaper. ‎ ‎10.
